IntroductionThis Home Discussion Guide is the take-home companion to the spring sermon series Grace Makes Us One .

The guide is fairly simple. It follows the pattern of the sermon series, with a weekly excerpt from Romans, a brief word of encouragement, prayer prompts, and discussion questions. The goal of this guide is help stimulateand continue conversation at home about the book of Romans.

Hopefully, this guide can be placed on your dinner table, in the car, on the refrigerator, or in some other prominent place in your home or apartment. Throughout the week, take five minutes or so to focus on one part ofthe guide at a time, perhaps as part of your familys devotional time or simply to prompt spiritual conversations.Below are some examples of how the guide could be used:

Talk about a discussion question during the evening meal together.

Read the encouragement thought and discuss during the morning commute. Use the prayer prompt to begin your evening prayers individually or with others. Read a portion of the weekly passage from Romans during your morning breakfast.

Our prayer is that this guide will continue to direct our thoughts and conversations towards the magnificent graceof God so that Gods grace will overflow from our lives throughout the week.

Week 1: Grace Makes Us OneRomans 1:1-17

1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle and set apart for the gospel of God 2 the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures 3 regarding his Son, who as to his earthly lifewas a descendant of David, 4 and who through the Spirit of holiness was appointed the Son of God in power byhis resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. 5 Through him we received grace and apostleship to call allthe Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his names sake. 6 And you also are among those Gentileswho are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

7 To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be his holy people: Grace and peace to you from Godour Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

8 First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for all of you, because your faith is being reported all over theworld. 9 God, whom I serve in my spirit in preaching the gospel of his Son, is my witness how constantly Iremember you 10 in my prayers at all times; and I pray that now at last by Gods will the way may be opened forme to come to you.

11 I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong 12 that is, that youand I may be mutually encouraged by each others faith. 13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers andsisters, that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order thatI might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.

14 I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. 15 That is why I am soeager to preach the gospel also to you who are in Rome.

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. 17 For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealedarighteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: The righteous will live by faith.

Week 1: Grace Makes Us One

Encouragement Thought: In Romans 1:16, Paul shares that he is not ashamed of the gospel because of its power to save everyone who believes. Paul understands what the message of Jesus can do. It can saveeveryone. There is no person thatwe can see or know that the power of the gospel cannot save. Everyone can experience rescue from sin andtransformation to new life through Jesus.

Prayer: God, help me to understand your love for everyone. Forgive when I judge, avoid, or view negatively thosearound me for whatever reason. Help me this week to offer hope to those I meet because I know you lovethem and can save them.

Discussion Questions:1. Paul says the Romans faith was being proclaimed throughout the whole word (1:8). What are you known

for? What do you want to be known for?

2. Paul says he wants to be with the Romans so they can be encouraged together (1:12). Who is it thatencourages you when you are with them?

3. Paul quotes from Habakkuk the phrase The righteous man shall live by faith. (1:17) What does it meanto live by faith? How can we do that today?

Week 2: One JudgmentRomans 2:1-11

1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judgeanother, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. 2 Now we know thatGods judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.

3So when you, a mere human being, pass

judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape Gods judgment? 4 Or do you showcontempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that Gods kindness is intended tolead you to repentance?

5 But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself forthe day of Gods wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. 6 God will repay each person accordingto what they have done. 7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he willgive eternal life. 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrathand anger. 9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for theGentile; 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 11 ForGod does not show favoritism.

Week 2: One Judgment

Encouragement Thought:In the previous chapter, Paul emphasizes the sins of them (Gentiles) in their disobedience to God (see 1:24,26, 28). But in Romans 2:1, Paul turns to you (Jews) and acknowledges that the Jews are without excuse interms of sin as well. In the same way, it is easy for us to point fingers at others them for their sinful

behaviors, yet Paul reminds us that every person stands condemned before God.

Prayer:God, forgive me when I judge others based on the things that I see. Forgive me when I am arrogant incomparing myself to others. Help me today to humble myself before your throne.

Discussion Questions:1. Paul says that judging others condemns ourselves (2:1). When are you tempted to judge others?

2. In Romans 2:5-6, Paul talks about Gods righteous judgment. Knowing that God will make things righteventually, how does that help us as we deal with injustice and evil?

3. Paul says there is no partiality with God (2:11). How good are you at treating people fairly?

Week 3: One JustificationRomans 3:21-30

21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and theProphets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is nodifference between Jew and Gentile, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are

justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as asacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his bloodto be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate hisrighteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished 26 he did it todemonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faithin Jesus.

27 Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. Because of what law? The law that requires works? No, becauseof the law that requires faith. 28 For we maintain that a person is justified by faith apart from the works of thelaw. 29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too, 30 since there isonly one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith.

Week 3: One Justification

Encouragement Thought:Romans 3:23 acknowledges that every person stands a sinner and falls short of Gods glory. But that is notthe end of the story. There is a Romans 3:24, which acknowledges the gift of justification through Christ.Paul calls this redemption, which means that Christ has bought us from slavery to sin and set us free intonew life.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for setting me free. Thank you that Romans 3:23 is not the end of the letter. Thank you thatgrace can be found through Jesus and I can live a new life for you today.

Discussion Questions:

1. In Romans 3:23, Paul acknowledges the universal sinfulness of mankind. What do you believe about sin?2. In 3:25-26, Paul claims that God demonstrates his righteousness by being just and the justifier. How do

you understand Gods work in setting you free through Jesus sacrifice?

3. In 3:28, Paul says we are justified through faith, not through the works of the law. What is faith? How doyou define it?

Week 5: One Reconciling DeathRomans 5:1-11

1Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus

Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast inthe hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering

produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because Gods love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

6 You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. 7 Very rarely willanyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But Goddemonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from Godswrath through him!

10For if, while we were Gods enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his

Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life! 11 Not only is this so, but wealso boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.

Week 5: One Reconciling Death

Encouragement Thought:A powerful phrase in this text is While we were yet sinners (5:8). Christ did not die for us because wehad any benefits or achievements to our name. We were sinners. We were enemies. We were against him.Yet still, Christ died for us. Paul says this demonstrated Gods love for us.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for loving me when I was unlovable. Help me to understand your love and live in your loveas I go throughout this day.

Discussion Questions:1. The emphasis of this passage is reconciliation (5:11). What does the word reconciliation mean? How

does it come about?2. Paul says we are to exult in our tribulations (5:3), knowing what they produce. What are some recent

troubles that have produced maturity in your life?

3. Paul draws a parallel from the present to the future. If we were reconciled to God, through the Sonweshall be saved by His life. How confident are you about the future judgment? How confident should we

be based on this passage?

Week 6: One SpiritRomans 8:1-17

1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through ChristJesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law was

powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinfulflesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of thelaw might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

5Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in

accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.6

The mind governed by the flesh isdeath, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; itdoes not submit to Gods law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.

9 You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of Godlives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is inyou, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the deadwill also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

12Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligationbut it is not to the flesh, to live according to

it. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

14

For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.15

The Spirit you received does notmake you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption tosonship. And by him we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are Godschildren. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirsheirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we sharein his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Week 6: One Spirit

Encouragement Thought:This passage emphasizes the power of the Spirit. Gods Spirit leads us to follow Gods way. It empowers usto live life in Gods pattern. It brings peace and faithfulness. The flesh is the opposite. It weakens us andstresses us out. The key to being a disciple is living and walking by the Spirit, not the flesh.

Prayer: Lord, help me to be in step with the Spirit today. Keep me from the desires of the flesh. Rather, grant me the peace and life that flows from your Spirit.

Discussion Questions:1. Paul says we have no condemnation if we are in Jesus (8:1). What does this mean?

2. Paul says that a mind focused on the flesh is hostile to God (8:7). What thoughts occupy your mind? Howdo we keep our mind focused on the Spirit?

3. Paul says the spirit of sonship allows us to call out Abba, Father! (8:15).

Week 7: One CallRomans 10:1-15

1 Brothers and sisters, my hearts desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved. 2 For Ican testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge. 3 Since they didnot know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to Gods righteousness.4 Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

5 Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: The person who does these things will live by them. 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: Do not say in your heart, Who will ascend intoheaven? (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 or Who will descend into the deep? (that is, to bring Christ upfrom the dead). 8 But what does it say? The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart, that is, themessage concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe inyour heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe andare justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, Anyonewho believes in him will never be put to shame. 12 For there is no difference between Jew and Gentilethesame Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, 13 for, Everyone who calls on the name of theLord will be saved.

14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one ofwhom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone

preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!

Week 7: One Call

Encouragement Thought:Paul in this passage talks about God carrying no distinction between persons based on ethnicity. Rather, Godwill hear and save anyone who calls upon him. God never goes deaf. God is not near only a certain set of

people. He loves everyone, and when any one of his children calls to him, he is ready to listen.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for hearing me when I call. May I walk with you today professing my faith in you by thewords and actions that I do.

Discussion Questions:1. Paul suggests that Jewish people have zeal not based on knowledge (10:2). What are other examples

where we can be very passionate about the wrong thing?2. Paul talks about belief with the heart and confession of the mouth towards salvation (10:10). What is the

connection between faith and confession?

3. Paul mentions in Romans 10:15 the importance of people announcing the message of the gospel. Whatare ways that you can let others know about Gods saving message?

Week 8: One Tree

Encouragement Thought:This is a confusing passage in which Paul explains the Jew-Gentile situation in Gods redemptive plan. Onekey element undergirding this is Gods sovereignty. God in his amazing wisdom has a plan to bless theworld. Through Christ, he has been faithful to this plan. This speaks to Gods great wisdom and Gods greatlove for the world (11:33-36).

Prayer:God, I do not always understand your ways, but I trust you. I thank you for your love of the whole world.

May I join with you in seeing the entire world come to know you.


1. Paul raises the question, Has God abandoned his people? and uses the illustration of Elijah as someonewho thought similarly (11:1-3). Are there occasions when you felt God was not there?

2. Paul talks about the hearts of Jews being hardened toward the gospel. Has there been a time in your lifewhen your heart was hard to Gods message? What broke up the hard ground of your heart?

3. Paul uses a tree analogy to describe Gods plan of salvation. Jews who have rejected Christ were cut off, but Gentiles were grafted in. What does one need to do to stay connected to the nourishing vine of Christ(11:22)?

Week 8: One TreeRomans 11:1-24

1I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of

Benjamin.2

God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew. Dont you know what Scripture says in the passage about Elijahhowhe appealed to God against Israel:

3Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are

trying to kill me?4

And what was Gods answer to him? I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee toBaal.

5So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.

6And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were,

grace would no longer be grace.7 What then? What the people of Israel sought so earnestly they did not obtain. The elect among them did, but the others were

hardened,8

as it is written: God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that could not see and ears that could not hear, to this very day.9 And David says: May their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them.10 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever.11

Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all! Rather, because of their transgression, salvation hascome to the Gentiles to make Israel envious.

12But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the

Gentiles, how much greater riches will their full inclusion bring!13

I am talking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I take pride in my ministry14

in the hope that I maysomehow arouse my own people to envy and save some of them. 15 For if their rejection brought reconciliation to the world, what willtheir acceptance be but life from the dead? 16 If the part of the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, then the whole batch is holy; if theroot is holy, so are the branches.

17 If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others andnow share in the nourishing sap from the olive root,

18do not consider yourself to be superior to those other branches. If you do,

consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you.19

You will say then, Branches were broken off so that I could be

grafted in.

Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but tremble.

21

For ifGod did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.22

Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that youcontinue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off. 23 And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God isable to graft them in again. 24 After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were graftedinto a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!

Week 9: One LifestyleRomans 12:1-21

1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of Gods mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holyand pleasing to Godthis is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but betransformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what Gods will ishis good,

pleasing and perfect will.3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather

think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each ofus has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, thoughmany, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given toeach of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it isteaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, doit diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor oneanother above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful inhope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lords people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those whomourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Donot be conceited.

17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far asit depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for Gods wrath, forit is written: It is mine to avenge; I will repay, says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:

If your enemy is hungry, feed him;if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.

In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Week 9: One Lifestyle

Encouragement Thought:The grace of Gods gospel can change a person. God invites us into the journey of transformation. This iswhere our minds are renewed and we begin to see the world differently. This translates into different thinkingand action. All of this is by the power of Gods Spirit forming us into what God wants, not what others want.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me when I have let society, friends, or family set expectations for who I should be. Transformme by your Spirit, and make me into who you desire me to be.

Discussion Questions:1. Paul describes transformation through the phrase renewing of your minds (12:2). What are thoughts,

ideas, or perspectives that are very common in our culture, but need to be renewed to be in line withChrist?

2. In Romans 12:6-8, Paul talks about spiritual gifts that can be used to serve the body of Christ. How doyou feel like God has gifted you to serve?

3. In 12:14-21, Paul gives many practical tips on how to treat others in relationships. What statements doyou most need to hear?

Week 11: One ChurchRomans 16:1-16

1 I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the church in Cenchreae. 2 I ask you to receive her in the Lord in away worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people,including me.

3 Greet Priscilla and Aquila, my co-workers in Christ Jesus. 4 They risked their lives for me. Not only I but all thechurches of the Gentiles are grateful to them.

5 Greet also the church that meets at their house.Greet my dear friend Epenetus, who was the first convert to Christ in the province of Asia.6 Greet Mary, who worked very hard for you.7 Greet Andronicus and Junia, my fellow Jews who have been in prison with me. They are outstanding

among the apostles, and they were in Christ before I was.8 Greet Ampliatus, my dear friend in the Lord.9 Greet Urbanus, our co-worker in Christ, and my dear friend Stachys.10 Greet Apelles, whose fidelity to Christ has stood the test.Greet those who belong to the household of Aristobulus.11 Greet Herodion, my fellow Jew.Greet those in the household of Narcissus who are in the Lord.12 Greet Tryphena and Tryphosa, those women who work hard in the Lord.Greet my dear friend Persis, another woman who has worked very hard in the Lord.13 Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord, and his mother, who has been a mother to me, too.14 Greet Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermes, Patrobas, Hermas and the other brothers and sisters with them.15 Greet Philologus, Julia, Nereus and his sister, and Olympas and all the Lords people who are with them.16 Greet one another with a holy kiss.All the churches of Christ send greetings.

Week 11: One Church

Encouragement Thought:The church is people. It is not a building, a place, or even an organization. It is people. Romans 16 remindsus of this. God calls people together in the name of Christ to carry forth his purposes. This group of peopleshares deep community. With these people, we find meaning, encouragement, and hope for the future.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the church. While the church is not perfect, I recognize that I cannot be a disciplewithout my fellow brothers and sisters. Bless them today in all the activities that they do. May the churchbring you glory in Christ Jesus.


1. Paul mentions various names throughout Romans 16 of people who are special to him in the Romanchurch. Who is special to you at Southside?

2. Paul uses the word greet repeatedly in referencing these brothers or sisters. How are you doing intaking time to greet your brothers and sisters regularly?

3. Paul loves the church and believes it is the result of Gods redemptive work in Christ. What are yourthoughts about the church? How important is the church to you?
