The Presider then says the following prayer

Let us pray.

God our Father, source of all light, today you revealed to the aged Simeon your light which enlightens the nations. Fill our hearts with the light of faith, that we who bear these candles may walk in the path of goodness, and come to the Light that shines forever, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Hymn at the Procession The Hymnal 1982, #259 Hail to the Lord who comes Old 120th

The Presider says We have waited on your loving-kindness, People O Lord, in the midst of your temple.

The Collect of the Day Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen .

All extinguish their candles.

The Word of the Lord

The Lessons The people sit. Jewish Scripture Malachi 3:1-4

Thus says the Lord, See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight-- indeed, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a re-finer's fire and like fullers' soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the LORD in righteous-ness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years.

Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 24:7-10 Chant: Edward Rimbault

The Epistle Hebrews 2:14-18 Since God's children share flesh and blood, Jesus himself likewise shared the same things, so that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. For it is clear that he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.

Lector The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

The Gospel Luke 2:22-40

Gospeller The Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, the parents of Jesus brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, "Every first-born male shall be designated as holy to the Lord"), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, "a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons." Now there was a man in Jerusa-lem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, "Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have pre-pared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gen-tiles and for glory to your people Israel." And the child's father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, "This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed-- and a sword will pierce your own soul too." There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven years after her mar-riage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom; and the favor of God was upon him.

Gospeller The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Prayers of the People Almighty God, source of all wisdom, be present with us today as we con-sider the renewal and mission of your Church. Teach us in all things to seek you first. Guide us to perceive what is right and grant us the courage to pursue it and grace to accomplish it.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Everlasting God, people throughout the world seek after you, watching and waiting for the peace which only you bring to bear: Grant us grace to bring knowledge of you to all who sit in darkness.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

God of grace, bless all those who minister to the sick, the friendless and the needy, all those on our parish prayer list, those known only to you, those whom we now name.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Almighty and everliving God, we give you thanks for this wonderful par-ish: For the gifts that are offered, for the love which we share and for the revelation of your enduring presence and redemption. May we be good stewards of this bounty, never forgetting that all things come from you.

Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

The Birthday Prayer Those celebrating birthdays in the month of February are invited to come forward.

Said by all O God, our times are in your hand: Look with favor, we pray, on your servants as they begin another year. Grant that they may grow in wisdom and grace, and strengthen their trust in your goodness all the days of their

lives, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Special Greeting to Visitors

Welcome to those of you here for the first time. The Episcopal Church offers all the sacraments of the Catholic Tradition to anyone who is a bap-tized Christian and who desires such sacrament. Please feel free to come to the communion rail to receive the bread and wine, or to receive a bless-ing. All are welcome to the rail, as all are welcome to reverently receive the heavenly food of God.

Please fill out a Visitor Card located in the pew. We’d love to send you our weekly electronic newsletter, so please add your e-mail address. You may also use this for your donation to the church to place in the plate during the offertory anthem. The priest will be available after the service to an-swer any questions you might have.

In the Episcopal Church we use a lot of books! For our prayers, we use The Book of Common Prayer, which has a red cover with a cross on the front. The service begins on page 355 in this book. To sing this morning, and we encourage everyone to sing, we will use The Hymnal 1982, which has a darker red cover than the prayer book and has its title on the front. The Episcopal Church uses readings from the Bible every service too, and these are printed for your convenience in this leaflet, as well as the com-munal prayers that are read after the Creed.

To the Grace Episcopal Church Family

Food For The Poor wishes to thank you for the welcome you extended to Father Whitney-Wise on his recent visit to your parish. On behalf of our less fortunate brothers and sisters of Latin America and the Caribbean, we thank you for having shared in their lives. They, and you, are blessed by your generosity. In Christ, The Food For The Poor Family
