Psalm 89:1-19 All are seated. chant: William CrotchMy song shall be alway of the loving-kindness of the Lord; with my mouth will I ever be showing thy truth from one

generation to another. For I have said, Mercy shall be set up for ever; thy truth shalt thou stablish in the heavens. I have made a covenant with my chosen; I have sworn unto David my servant, Thy seed will I stablish for ever, and set up thy throne from one generation to another. O Lord, the very heavens shall praise thy wondrous works, and thy truth in the congregation of the saints. For who is he among the clouds, that shall be compared unto the Lord? And what is he among the gods, that shall be like unto the Lord? God is very greatly to be feared in the council of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are round about him. O Lord God of hosts, who is like unto thee? Thy truth, most mighty Lord, is on every side. Thou rulest the raging of the sea; thou stillest the waves thereof when they arise. Thou hast subdued Egypt, and destroyed it; thou hast scattered thine enemies abroad with thy mighty arm. The heavens are thine. The earth also is thine; thou hast laid the foundation of the round world, and all that therein is. Thou hast made the north and the south; Tabor and Hermon shall rejoice in thy Name. Thou hast a mighty arm; strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand. Righteousness and equity are the habitation of thy seat; mercy and truth shall go before thy face. Blessed is the people, O Lord, that can rejoice in thee; they shall walk in the light of thy countenance. Their delight shall be daily in thy Name; and in thy righteousness shall they make their boast. For thou art the glory of their strength, and in thy loving-kindness thou shalt lift up our horns. For the Lord is our defence; the Holy One of Israel is our King

First Lesson: Colossians 1:1-14Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, To the saints and faithful brothers and sisters in Christ in Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father. In our prayers for you we always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. You have heard of this hope before in the word of the truth, the gospel that has come to you. Just as it is bearing fruit and growing in the whole world, so it has been bearing fruit among yourselves from the day you heard it and truly comprehended the grace of God. This you learned from Epaphras, our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf, and he has made known to us your love in the Spirit. For this reason, since the day we heard it, we have not ceased praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God’s will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as you grow in the knowledge of God. May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Magnificat (BCP page 65), The New College Service Please stand, as able. Herbert HowellsMy soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever.

Second Lesson: Luke 10:25-37 All are seated.Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he said, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? What do you read there?” He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” And he said to him, “You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.” But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and when I come back,

page 5

I will repay you whatever more you spend.’ Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

Nunc Dimittis (BCP page 66), The New College Service Please stand, as able. Herbert HowellsLord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel.

Apostles’ Creed, The choir and congregation chant the Creed. All I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

CollectsOfficiant O Lord, we beseech thee mercifully to receive the prayers of thy people who call upon thee, and grant

that they may both perceive and know what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to fulfill the same; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

O God, from whom all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey thy commandments, and also that by thee, we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness; through the merits of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

Lighten our darkness, we beseech thee, O Lord; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of thy only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Anthem: “My Lord, thou art in every breath I take” Kevin OldhamMy Lord, Thou art in every breath I take,And every bite and sup taste firm of Thee. With buoyant mercy Thou enfoldest me,

And holdest up my foot each step I make.Thy touch is all around me when I wake,Thy sound I hear, and by Thy light I seeThe world is fresh with Thy divinityAnd all Thy creatures flourish for Thy sake.

For I have looked upon a little childAnd seen Forgiveness, and have seen the dayWith eastern fire cleanse the foul night away;So cleansest Thou this House I have defiled. And if I should be merciful, I knowIt is Thy mercy, Lord, in overflow. Text by Kenneth Boulding

Prayers of the People Please stand, as able.

Prayer of St. ChrysostomAll Almighty God, who hast given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication

unto thee, and hast promised through thy well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name thou wilt be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy ser-vants as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

Blessing and Sending Forth of ChoirAll Loving and gracious God, be with your servants on this pilgrimage and guide their way. Be a companion

for them along their journey, a guide at crossroads, strength in their weariness, shelter on the way, shade against the heat, light in the darkness, and firmness in their intentions, in order that, at the end of their journey, they might return safely home; through Jesus Christ your son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

Gifts for Hospice ChapelThe new St. Luke’s Hospice House on Southwest Trafficway will be dedicated and opened this week. As a way of showing our support for the work among those living with cancer and terminal illnesses and honoring the Episcopal roots of St. Luke’s, we are planning to donate some items for use in the hospice chapel. Among the things we are planning to give are vessels and linens for celebrations of Holy Com-munion, a lectern Bible for public reading and the gift of prayer rugs to be used by Muslims and others using the sacred space.

The chapel itself is being dedicated in memory of Marilyn McMul-len, long-time member of the Cathedral. It is intended to be used by persons of all faiths. We are glad that we can be part of providing for this fitting memorial and place of spiritual refreshment.

If you would like to contribute toward the purchase of these items, please send your gift in care of Janet Sweeting, Cathedral Sacristan. Make checks out to Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral, marked with “Hospice” on the memo line. Thank you for your support.

Outreach OpportunitiesSchool Supply Drive: Begins TODAYThe Cathedral Social Outreach Commission is sponsoring a school supply drive for children in foster care and attending school on cam-pus at Saint. School Uniforms Needed (used or new)For those of you who like to garage sale, shop at thrift stores and outlets, or have children or grandchildren that have outgrown khaki pants or navy collared shirts, please bring them to the Cathedral. James Elementary School, one of the schools we assist with the Back-snack program, is in desperate need of school uniforms to comply with the district wide dress code. Many parents in this neighborhood don’t have the resources to purchase uniforms. The principal at James would welcome all donations — used or new. There is also a need for some adult sizes for the larger children. We want to present Dr. Jo Nemeth (principal at James) a variety of sizes for students who can not afford uniforms prior to the start of the 2013-2014 school year.
