Why China?» Almost all Multinational Corporations have operations in Greater

China.» Companies in Greater China tend to have a gap in company culture

between the global headquarters and China.» Common obstacles in the region include: A war for talent, incredible

speed of development, company processes, high turnover, safety regulations, outsourcing laws changing, quality compliance and diversification.

» Global headquarters often lack the cultural knowledge it takes to implement best practices in the China division, and thus cannot manage effectively.

» MNCs need our help to bridge this gap, and we opened our offices here in Greater China 2.5 years ago to support them in exactly this way.

» Local companies in Greater China are becoming international at a rapid pace, and they want to expand their success abroad. In the near future we expect these companies to be coming to our affiliates for GPTW services.

A unique marketplace for MNCs

Rules for doing business in China1. Anything is possible2. Nothing is simple3. Patience is key for success4. Even if the answer is YES, it doesn’t necessarily mean “we agree”5. “You don’t understand my country” means they don’t agree6. “Transitory regulations” means they can change at any moment

and even be retroactive7. “Don’t worry, there’s no problem” means there could be

problems8. Writing the draft of a contract is the start of negotiations9. Whenever you are feeling optimistic, remember rule number 210. Whenever you are feeling pessimistic, remember rule number 1

China Facts» China’s population is 1.35 BILLION!» China uses 45 billion chopsticks per year» Many factories in China have live-in campuses

› Foxconn has around 2,400,000 workers living and working in these live-in complexes

» China's Internet penetration is 2.5x that of the US» In China you CAN’T make business without Guanxi:

relationship. You have to have the right contact, otherwise, you’re lost.

» The modern word “China” most likely derives from the name of the Qin (pronounced “chin”) dynasty. First Emperor Qin Shi Huang (260-210 B.C.) of the Qin dynasty first unified China in 221 B.C., beginning an Imperial period which would last until A.D. 1912

China Facts» Written Chinese has both Traditional and Simplified characters.

Mainland China uses Simplified, while Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan use Traditional.

» "Chinese" is not a language. It is a cover term for about 7 or 8 languages (not dialects) that share a common writing system. These languages are closely related, but are not mutually intelligible. Mandarin is the language most people in the US learn as "Chinese". Other Chinese languages are: Yue, Min, Hakka, Kejia, etc.

› Mandarin is the most diverse of these languages and has about as many speakers as the other Chinese languages combined. There are about 20 separate dialects of Mandarin throughout the area where it is the primary native language.

› Linguists debate over the total number of dialects spoken throughout China. No one really knows the answer but it is likely in the thousands.
