Welcome! Dear GPRO Certified Instructor, Welcome to GPRO and thank you for being a GPRO Instructor! GPRO Certified Instructors are essential to the success of GPRO. They bring many years of experience and their passion for sustainability to teach others the value of green building. By providing this service, you are helping construction workers and tradespeople become GPRO Certificate Holders. Students who complete GPRO courses, study the GPRO manuals, and pass the corresponding exams will be positioned to meet the expectations of owners and tenants who want healthier, environmentally sustainable, and energy-efficient buildings. Thank you for making this valuable contribution to greening the American workforce. We look forward to working with you!

1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 USING THIS HANDBOOK This GPRO Instructor Handbook is designed in conjunction with the GPRO Delivery Partner Handbook and Instructor Agreement. It includes information about the roles and responsibilities for the Instructor, the Delivery Partner and Urban Green Council.

The Handbook is a living document; Urban Green will make every effort to notify each participant when updates are made, but please refer to the most current version of the Handbook at all times. This version is always available for download on the Instructor Resources page of our website. Please see section 4.2 for login information.

We have done our best to make sure the Handbook and Instructor Agreement are consistent with each other. However, if there are any conflicts between the Handbook and the Instructor Agreement, the Agreement will be treated as the governing document.

If you have any questions about the information in this Handbook, please contact Urban Green Council immediately.

2 BECOMING A GPRO CERTIFIED INSTRUCTOR

Highly qualified instructors are the cornerstone of a successful GPRO program. The GPRO Instructor Training process helps to ensure that each instructor is not only well-trained in green practices, but will inspire and empower his or her students. 2.1 STEPS TO BECOME A GPRO INSTRUCTOR:

1. Instructor Applicants are recommended by a Delivery Partner, who will hire them to teach GPRO Courses. The Applicant must meet the requirements defined in the GPRO Instructor Qualifications. See Appendix A.

2. The Delivery Partner submits the potential Instructor’s application, along with a copy of his or her resume/work history and references (professional and/or teaching) for review to Urban Green Council.

3. Urban Green Council approves the Applicant to attend a GPRO Instructor Training. There are two training paths for an Applicant to become a GPRO Certified Instructor. These are explained in section 2.2.

4. After an Instructor Applicant attends an Instructor Training session and passes the GPRO Exam, Urban Green Council notifies the Delivery Partner and the Instructor Applicant that the individual has successfully met all of the requirements to become a GPRO Certified Instructor.

5. The Applicant submits a signed Instructor Agreement stating that he/she understands the requirements associated with being a GPRO Certified Instructor to Urban Green Council.

6. Urban Green Council certifies the applicant as a Certified GPRO Instructor and notifies the Delivery Partner and the Applicant. At this point, the individual is approved to teach the specified GPRO Courses.

7. Urban Green Council sends the Instructor the materials he or she needs to teach.

8. Urban Green Council issues a GPRO Certified Instructor Wallet Card and Certificate within approximately 4 weeks after receiving the signed Instructor Agreement.

2.2 INSTRUCTOR TRAINING There are two paths for Instructor Applicants to become GPRO Certified Instructors.

PATH #1: 2-DAY INSTRUCTOR TRAINING SESSIONS Instructor Applicants who are new to GPRO will attend a 2-day Instructor Training Session. These session will consist of:

DAY 1:

• Fundamentals of Building Green (4 hours)

• Instructor Training (3-4 hours)

DAY 2:

Page 6: GPRO INSTRUCTOR HANDBOOK.110806gpro.urbangreencouncil.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/GPRO... · GPRO Exam, Urban Green Council notifies the Delivery Partner and the Instructor Applicant

 GPRO Instructor Handbook: Page 6/13

• Trade Specific course (6 hours)

• Exam (75 minutes)

All GPRO Instructors who are trained in a trade-specific course must be capable of and willing to teach both Fundamentals and their trade-specific course. Instructors who wish to teach only Fundamentals can attend DAY #1 of the Instructor Training session and then take the exam at the scheduled time on DAY #2. PATH #2: INSTRUCTOR ORIENTATIONS FOR EXISTING GPRO CERTIFICATE HOLDERS Instructor Applicants who are GPRO Certificate Holders can become GPRO Certified Instructors by attending a 2-3 hour GPRO Instructor Orientation where they will receive the information needed by GPRO Instructors to teach effectively.

These sessions will be organized by Urban Green Council and can be face-to-face or via Skype or other electronic medium. At the Instructor Orientation Session, Urban Green Council’s Master Trainer will: • Emphasize the learning objectives of GPRO Fundamentals and trade-specific course

objectives • Review adult learning techniques • Review each activity, handout, and all required classroom materials • Discuss how to sign in students, register walk-ins, check IDs, and manage other

classroom situations • Provide preliminary evaluation of instructor applicant based on classroom

performance and representative teaching exercises. • Review Instructor Handbook
