BACK TO KING’S RESTAURANT ! ! ! The October 7 meeting will be held at the King’s in Harmarville

Greetings Pony Lovers –

Autumn is now upon us, but not before we completed more Mustang activities. Mustang Night at Starlite on September 4th was a huge success. The weather was grand - we had over twenty GPMC member cars sharing our spot in Feature Row. Officially, 3,000 cars attended the cruise. Traffic was backed up in every direction just to get in. It’s hard to see how the folks at Northway Christian Community will be able to top this season next year.

Our meeting on September 2nd at Pietro’s Pizza Pub in Dormont completed our roster of “outdoor” meetings for the summer, as well as our experiment with moving the meetings to different parks and locales around town. I’d like to hear your feedback on whether we should continue this practice next year.

As you’re no doubt aware, our second monthly cruise at Kings Family Restaurant in Harmarville had a less than stellar turnout, but many new members attended and the camaraderie was great. At the September meeting, we decided to move the final cruise to Thursday, September 17 so as not to conflict with the cruise at Pittsburgh Mills. Check our website for the latest updates.

The next big event will be our Fall Foliage Tour on October 25th. The leaves should still be quite nice at that time. Check out page 5 of this newsletter for details. We’ve planned what I think will be a great outing. The car collection we plan to visit is one of the best in the Pittsburgh area.

At the September meeting we finalized our plans for the Christmas party. Mark your calendars for December 6th. This year it’s time to move the venue to the west side of town, so we’ll be at Parkway Center. Being fairly centrally located, it should be convenient for most everyone.

The election of new officers will take place at the December meeting. If you’re interested in holding an office, now is the time to throw your hat into the ring. Please let either Ed Saitz or me know before the November meeting.

I hope to see all of you at our October 7th meeting. We’ll be back at Kings Family Restaurant in Harmarville for the duration of the cold weather. For new members, it’s located on old PA-28, right at the Allegheny Valley Turnpike exit behind McDonalds. Just turn on Alpha Drive between McDonalds and Shults Ford, Lincoln, Mercury.

Minutes of September 2, 2009 General Meeting

Meeting was called to order by President Ken Barker at Pietros Pizza Pub on Banksville Road. Sign in sheet is being passed around and 50/50 tickets are being sold by Denny Lane. New member present, Mike DeLeonibus has a 2010 GT.

Ken asked if there were any corrections to last months minutes. No corrections. Motion to accept by Mark Morrow; seconded by Cheryl Bakaj; all in favor.

Treasurer’s Report: Jason passed around report. Some small bills outstanding from the Hospitality Picnic. Motion to accept by Jennie Barker; seconded by Denny Lane; all in favor.

Membership: ValJean not present but we have picked up some new members.

Newsletter: The deadline for the newsletter this month is Friday September 4. Jennie thanked Jason Uhler for submitting a story about the SAAC 34 meet. Members Tom and Joann Horner have purchased an ad for the newsletter & website.

Merchandise: We now have women’s shirts for sale. A sample throw was passed around. Minimum order size is 10; cost to members is $30. Let Andy know if anyone is interested.

MCA: Ed would like to remind members that he needs their MCA numbers. A ballot for MCA director is in the recent MCA magazine; Ed suggested we consider Jim Keenan who previously helped the club.

Webmaster: No report Nathan not present, but contacted Ken and is doing updates.

TRCCC: Next meeting is Sept 21. Tom will find out more info about the Fall Social which is held during a Steelers game at Peters Place.

Activities: Mustang Night at Starlite is this Friday. There is a sign in sheet. If coming please sign so we can save you a spot. Fall Foliage Tour on October 25. We will meet at Waterworks Mall and drive to Jack Swaney’s Garages to see his collection of over 60 cars; the last stop will be Casa Narcisi.

Old Business: Nine members worked at Starlite on GPMC volunteer night, August 21, and the church was very thankful for the help. 36 members and 12 guests attended the Hospitality Picnic. Feedback is positive, and we’ll consider having it next year at the same park. We had great member turnout, but only 2 non-member cars at our August 19 cruise at King’s, due to the competing cruise at Pittsburgh Mills. Our final cruise at King’s will be on Thursday September 17; rain date is September 24. Since we had such a poor turnout at our August cruise, Ed Saitz moved for the club to split the cost with King’s and Shults Ford. Denny Lane seconded; all in favor.

New Business: Jason moved to donate $100 to Single Mom’s Garage; Mark Morrow seconded; all in favor. Flyers for cruises at South Park Oct. 4; Horseless carriage on Sept 13; also a large cruise at Moon Park on September 13. We received a letter from the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank thanking us for our donation and inviting us for a behind the scene tour of their operation. We also received a letter from Michelle Silliman thanking us for our donation to the Susan Koman Race for the Cure in memory of her husband Terry. Danielle Lane has checked out places for the Holiday Party and suggested the Best Western, Parkway Center Inn, to be held on Sunday December 6. Jason Uhler moved to put down a $100 deposit; Mark Morrow seconded; all in favor. We would like feedback from members on the different locations for our summer meetings so we can plan next summer’s meeting locations.

Our next meeting will be on October 7 at King’s Restaurant in Harmarville.

50/50 won by Cheryl Bakaj.

Motion to adjourn by Jason Uhler and seconded by Mark Morrow.

Danielle Lane, Secretary, Greater Pittsburgh Mustang Club

GPMC Logo Throws Available !!!

Earlier this summer the GPMC was contacted by Pro Designs of Anderson, SC. They manufacture USA-made logo merchandise such as pillows, towels, totes, blankets and throws. Their products feature all-cotton, woven designs, and their pricing is very reasonable if we order more than their minimum quantity. Using the Club's current logo that we provided, they produced the design shown here. This throw is 50"x60". They sent us a sample throw that we'll have available at our upcoming meetings for members to examine. The members who have already seen the throw are impressed with the quality of the workmanship. The minimum quantity is ten throws to qualify for their discounted pricing of $30 each. The Club doesn't plan to inventory this type of merchandise, so we need commitments from our members for at least ten throws before we place an order. Please contact Andy Schor ([email protected] or 412-481-1966) if you'd like to order one.

THE 2010 ELECTIONS ARE JUST AROUND THE CORNER Would you like to have a hand in the club’s future? Consider holding an office.

Please contact Ken Barker or Ed Saitz if you or someone you know would like to

be more involved in the club.

2009 GPMC FALL FOLIAGE/GARAGE/WINERY TOUR

BLAST OFF FOR MARS

It’s official! The 2009 Fall Foliage Tour will have three highlights: (1) a tour to view the fall colors; (2) stops at 3 garages in Mars to tour a fantastic collection of vehicles and automobilia; and (3) a visit to La Casa Narcisi winery.

The group will meet in the parking lot of the Waterworks Mall in Aspinwall, near Old Navy, at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday, October 25. Each driver will be given a set of directions, but we also encourage everyone to bring a walkie-talkie so that we can keep track of each other. A drive of 75-90 minutes will take us along the back roads of northern Allegheny and southern Butler counties through some of the nicest fall scenery in our area.

We will visit three garages in Mars to look at a collection of cars, many of which you won’t see anywhere else in our area. Our host, Jack Swaney, will answer any and all questions about the cars in his collection.

Our last stop is at La Casa Narcisi Winery for lunch and live entertainment. There will be a covered picnic area reserved for us on the grounds. In case of rain, we’ll move inside. The winery, located on Route 910 in Gibsonia, is

family-owned and operated. Last year, Dennis Narcisi himself led a group of GPMC members on a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the wine-making operation. We can visit the tasting room to sample the wines and purchase wine to enjoy there or take home. The winery has joined forces with Siba Cucina to offer a broad array of freshly-prepared foods, ranging from appetizers to entrée salads,

pasta and pizza, and phenomenal desserts. You are allowed to bring in soft drinks and water, as well as your own picnic lunch. State law prohibits all alcoholic beverages except those purchased on the premises. Visit La Casa Narcisi Winery online to see the winery, learn about its history, and see the types of wines and foods you can enjoy there:

IMPORTANT: You must reserve space on this tour in order to participate. Our hosts need to know how many cars and people to expect. RSVP to GPMC Prez Ken Barker.

MEMBER PROFILE: CLARK & SHIRLEY STEWART Clark & Shirley Stewart are returning members of the Greater Pittsburgh Mustang Club. They originally joined the club when the annual All-Ford Show was held at McCrackin Ford. At the time, however, Clark’s position as Richland Township Fire Chief prevented him from participating in many club activities. He retired in December, and they rejoined the club this summer. Clark has always been a Ford guy, and has used Ford trucks with 6-inch lifts & big tires over his 33 years as a plastering contractor. The problem was he couldn’t fit his long legs into the earlier Mustangs – until this one. Even then, it took him three tries in three months to get THE Mustang of his dreams. In April of 2005, tired of the $100 fill ups for his 2003 Ford Excursion, he bought his first Mustang, a black V6. He put duals on it and loved it, but really wanted a V8, so. . .in May of 2005 he found a silver 2005 GT with a V8 engine and traded in the black V6. He was happy with the silver GT, until he drove by Shults Ford in Harmarville in June of 2005 and spotted a yellow GT out on the lot. He was on his way to work at the time, but stopped for a quick look. He then went back and traded in the silver GT for the yellow beauty he has now. It drove his wife and his insurance agent to distraction trying to keep up, and his friends gave him a hard time about going through a car a month.

The Pittsburgh Raceway Park is the place where drivers with the need for speed go to flex their cars' muscles and pit their racing skills against competitors. Clark is no stranger to the world of racing, having started two months after getting his 2005 Mustang GT. He was the top dog in 2007, pushing his GT to 120 mph to complete the quarter-mile in 11.958 seconds. Last October, he got it down to 11.7 seconds.

Clark says he has always been a gear-head. He put on the stripes two days after getting the yellow GT. He also put on duals and glasspacks. This is the first car he has ever raced, but now he’s a regular at local events like the Flashlight Drags. He is introducing his 11 year old granddaughters to the world of cars. They can name many of the cars on the road and get their kicks from strapping on helmets and riding with Clark in the Mustang as he does burnouts in their long driveway. Clark and Shirley’s first cars were Chevy Impalas – his a 1959 and hers a 1964 S/S. His lasted until the engine blew; hers until it was totaled. The 1959 was earned cutting grass, and Clark used old license plates on the floorboard to get it to pass inspection, not having easy access to sheet metal at the time.

Shirley has been a MultiServ administrative assistant for 38 years and enjoys her free time spoiling the grandkids with activities like going to the park and to Chuck E. Cheese. Sometimes the girls get to stay over the weekend for even more spoiling. She also enjoys spectator sports.

Clark’s other interests include trout fishing, golf (8-handicap) and bow hunting. He makes and sells long bows (think Robin Hood.)
