Chicago Landmarks

This is a picture of the Chicago Skyline. Chicago is considered one of the most beautiful cities in all of America. Chicago is located on Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes. This gives us many wonderful beaches.

Page 16: Gower Middle School

Navy Pier was inspired by the 1909 Plan for Chicago, which called for two large piers projecting into Lake Michigan. Built at a time when Chicago was a major inland port, "Municipal Pier No. 2" (the other pier was never built) was originally designed to accommodate shipping facilities. The structure's name was changed in 1927 to honor those who served in the U.S. Navy during World War I. Today Navy Pier is one of Chicago’s biggest tourist attractions. Along with the giant Ferris Wheel, there are other rides and many restaurants and shops. You can also take boat rides on Lake Michigan or hear a variety of bands.

Buckingham Fountain is funded by philanthropist Kate Buckingham in memory of her brother. Buckingham Fountain is one of the nation's finest fountains and a public icon of Chicago. It is the centerpiece of Grant Park, the city's grand "front yard," and is set within a handsomely landscaped garden, one of the city's finest examples of a Beaux-Arts-style landscape design.

Chicago Water Tower is one of the only buildings left standing after the Chicago Fire. The fire wiped out most of the city, but as you can see, it has been rebuilt. To the right of the tower in the second picture is the John Hancock Building.
