WORD FROM THE CHAIRPERSON
School’s vision and ethos THE SCHOOL’S VISION
To develop a happy and homely community for learners within a busy team based on respect for each other and in an environment that is Welsh in language and culture. Encourage respect for other cultures and traditions within the community and the city. Strive to achieve the highest standards both inside and outside the classroom. Ensure equal opportunities for all members. Raise awareness of
environmental matters.
THE SCHOOL Establish a sound awareness of Welshness in every child’s mind and promote pride in their language. Educate every child to the highest standard possible and develop each individual’s ability and skills. Give every child a firm foundation of knowledge and provide a variety of experiences in order to promote every aspect of their development. Promote links and co-operation with parents and encourage close links with the local community.
ETHOS Ensure that each child feels happy and safe at school, by creating a homely and exciting atmosphere and community within the building. Teach every child to think for him/herself and to learn how to learn and behave properly and responsibly at all times. Foster self respect, respect for others and for property. Develop committed and enthusiastic teachers.

Another year gone, and as I
say every year, it’s hard to
believe that time is passing so
quickly. It’s also difficult to
believe how much the children
and staff can achieve in such a
short time. There are many
highlights, including Elin
Fflur’s concert where the
children had an
opportunity to experience
contemporary Welsh culture,
sport competitions,
establishing the Welsh Charter
and Equalities Group, and the
Foundation Phase singing
their hearts out at Tafwyl.
A big thanks therefore goes to
the staff for their tireless
work, and to the children for
their commitment and talents.
But it has been a turbulent
year in many senses as well.
Firstly, we had to adapt to
many staffing changes,
because of maternity
(congratulations to Miss
Fulgoni, Miss Dwyfor and
Mrs Nash!) and other factors.
I’m aware this hasn’t been easy
for the children or the parents, but
I’d like to thanks Mr Hughes for
guiding the ship through this
difficult time, and for the staff for
stepping up when needed.
Secondly, we heard at the
beginning of the year that we’d
been named as one of the Band B
schools, earmarked for
development and extension to two
streams. Whilst this was good
news, it meant our negotiations
with the Council regarding
extending the play area and other
improvements you as parents had
campaigned so hard for during last
term, were put on hold until the
timetable was known.
We now know that Band B work
won’t commence until 2021-22,
therefore you’ll be glad to know
that negotiations on the yard
extension have re-commenced,
and that a member of the Council
has been measuring the relevant
area.
I don’t want to raise
expectations, but I promise
this is one of the key priorities
for the Governors going
forward.
I’d like to wish good luck to
our Year 6 who are on their
way to Plasmawr. Enjoy the
experience, and remember to
come back to see us before
long!
Lastly, therefore, thanks to
you parents – thanks for your
continued support, your
commitment, and for looking
to the future. I look forward
to working with you for the
benefit of the school next
year.

disability access
policy. These
statutory documents
help ensure access to
all pupils, visitors and
stakeholders of the

a legal framework.
Security, Health and Safety Within the school site there are a limited number of entry and exit points. As a matter of course all
visitors report to the School Office to sign the visitors book.
Two members of staff have advanced First Aid at Work Certificates. Around the school there are
several first aid points that are equipped with basic first aid boxes. The school also has a defibrillator,
which can be found on the wall just inside the main entrance.
For ease of access the yard caters for pupils and adults with mobility problems.
The school has a comprehensive Health, Safety and Welfare policy, in order to provide a safe school
environment for everyone. The Governor responsible for Health, Welfare and Safety is Mr Neil Scott.
Cardiff City Council contractors, DSU, are responsible for cleaning the school. This includes cleaning
the 5 pupil toilets, the disabled and staff toilets.

Yrs. 3 and 4 (Mrs Blythe and Mr Wright)
Waw! What a busy year learning and enjoying in year 3 and 4. ‘A long time ago’, ‘Force on Earth’ and
‘Under the Skin’ were our themes this year and we’ve really enjoyed our ‘discovery day’ where we explored
and researched to answer the queries our peers had. One highlight was the trip to ‘We the Curious’ in Bristol. We had an amazing experience playing and learning with over 200 different Science activities. Whilst learning about famous people and events that happened a ‘Long Time Ago’ we were delighted to have visited the National Museum during the Autumn Term. We enjoyed learning about the different dinosaurs that once
lived and we were very fortunate to have had tour of the museum to see the dinosaur bones.
We had a blast during science week with a number of different workshops available and we developed new
skills during ‘Changes Week’. It was nice to have the opportunity to vary our subjects, teachers and routine for a week of action packed activities! Everyone was pleased to see improvement in their fitness scores following the fitness sessions. Year 3 and 4 has nearly come to an end but with the fun we've had this year we are ready to actively continue our journey at this special school.
Yrs. 5 and 6 (Miss Le Bon / Mrs Nash)
During the Autumn term we learnt about the Second World War. We had a range of
different experiences such as visiting a Museum in Swansea by dressing up as an evacuee. We had
a pleasant surprise by our parents because they had sent us letters to say that they’re missing us.
We enjoyed reading Rhyfel Sam novel and we also enjoyed completing the afternoon of discovery.
We also had the chance to follow a Second World War recipe and we had the opportunity to bake
during the Christmas period. Remarkably we had the amazing experience of singing at
St. David’s Hall as part of BBC Radio Wales Christmas Concert.
During the Spring term, our theme was Beyond the sea and waves. We learnt about life in the
1960s and printed our own 1960s wall paper. We discovered how tsunamis start and we wrote a
newspaper article to describe the effect of the 2004 tsunami. Also we studied local disasters such
as Aberfan and the drowning of Trywern. We discussed the effect of these tragedies on the
community and its people.
We’ve enjoyed a variety of thematic weeks such as our week at Llangrannog, Changes Week,
Sports Week and Science Week where we had the chance to code drones to fly in the hall.
However, one of our main highlights was welcoming Elin Fflur to school and had the opportunity
to sing Harbwr Diogel with her!

CLASSES ANNUAL REVIEW
Reception / Nursery (Mr Oleszko and Miss Jeffery) The children spent the first term settling into their new environment, learning Welsh and building
relationships with both staff and their peers. Our theme in the autumn term was ‘Our colourful
world’ where the Nursery and Reception classes learned a new colour each week and travelled to
different countries discovering their flags, traditions and cultures. They especially enjoyed tasting
new food from the four corners of the globe!
During the spring term, in addition to observing living eggs growing into fluffy chicks, we studied
traditional tales. The children’s voice is central to our planning and they not only chose the stories
they wished to learn but also were central to the planning and creating our roleplay areas in the
classrooms. Our classrooms were transformed into magical castles, 3 bear’s cottages and
beanstalks for Jack to climb! We also took advantage of the cold snowy weather to learn about
melting and freezing. The children learned about the properties of different materials whilst
building houses for the 3 little pigs.
During the summer term we have been studying ‘The Farm’. We were fortunate to have a sheep
visit our classroom and learned a great deal about wool and how we use it to make clothes. We
have had lots of experiences learning about and tasting different farm related foods. We enjoyed
tasting vegetables, sausages, bacon sandwiches, cheese, ice cream and both classes have made
butter and milkshakes. We are really excited about our summer trip to Animal Farm Adventure
Park.

CLASS BY CLASS ANNUAL REVIEW-PUPIL VOICE
Yrs. 1 & 2 (Mr Walker and Miss Stephens) Year 1 and 2 have had a fun filled year; we have worked hard and
have learnt about lots of interesting things!
During the Autumn term ‘What changes?’ was our theme. We learnt
about many things that can change such as the weather and our
bodies. Dentists paid us a visit to teach us how to look after our teeth.
We found this very informative and interesting.
‘In the middle of the night…’ was our next theme. We were excited to
learn about nocturnal animals, electricity and fairies! We went on an
exciting adventure to Caerphilly Mountain Ranch to learn more about
fairy tales and participate in team building activities.
In the Summer term, ‘Our pretty garden’ was our theme. We
thoroughly enjoyed learning about different flowers and creepy
crawlies. We were also very excited, whilst performing our class
assemblies to our parents and sing in the Tafwyl.

Dosbarth jigso
The dosbarth Jigso has supported 19 of our learners this year from years 2 to 6. The children receive breakfast every morning and there is an opportunity to discuss their feelings, any problems or concerns they have. There is a structured Language and Mathematics session taught every morning including many nurturing principles. This year we have used the Talkabout intervention to help develop, emotional intelligence and we have experimented with some mindfulness and growth mind-set activities which are proving popular. We have recently visited a local home for the elderly and are hoping to develop a fortnightly activity session there.

Additional Learning Needs (ALN)
Many children have additional educational learning needs at some time during
their school lives. Some children have specific difficulties, impairments or
disabilities and others have additional needs because they are high achievers
and need challenging. Our aim is to meet the needs of all children through
careful and comprehensive planning, and the use of different strategies that
enable learners to thrive.
The provision for pupils with Additional Learning Needs is a priority at Ysgol
Gymraeg Nant Caerau. The curriculum is broad and inclusive and offers equal
opportunities for all. The support staff work effectively within the classroom
with individuals and small groups.
Currently Ysgol Gymraeg Nant Caerau has 24.5% of it’s pupils on the Additional
Learning Needs register, with 2 pupils with statements for ALN.
Mrs Penny Hughes Jones is the Additional Learning Needs co-ordinator. A
number of teaching assistants work with individuals, pairs or groups of pupils
who have Additional Learning Needs on various interventions to develop literacy,
numeracy and emotional skills. We’ve established a number of interventions
such as SAIL, Maths Factor, Rainbow Readers, Rapid Readers, Speech Links
and ELSA (emotional literacy). The school has established a nurture class for
developing wellbeing, emotional, social, literacy and numeracy skills for groups
of pupils.
Mrs Mari Owens has a specialist Dyslexia teacher qualification.
The school also employs a play therapist, Mrs Glenda Sloan, who works with
individuals and small groups.
The Governor with the responsibility for Additional Learning Needs is Mr Mike
Nelson.

Foundation Phase Teacher Assessments 2018 (National Comparison)
Foundation Phase Indicator
D pupils who have been disapplied under sections 113—116 of the 2002 Education Act,
or pupils for whom teachers were unable to provide an assessment.
N pupils not awarded an outcome for reasons other than disapplication.
W pupils who are ‘working towards’ outcome 1, but have not yet achieved the standards needed for
outcome 1.
The general expectation is that the majority of Year 2 pupils will attain outcome 5.
Therefore outcome 4 is an assessment for pupils performing slightly below general expectation;
outcome 6 is an assessment of pupils performing above the general expectation.
The Foundation Phase Indicator (FPI) represents the percentage of pupils achieving outcome 5 or above in
PSD, LCE/LCW and MDT in combination.
