Siemens plans to sell its business for hospital information systems for US $1.3 Billion to Cerner
Corp.
September 21, 2014 MUNICH—Siemens Healthcare plans to divest its hospital information system business (HS) for US$ 1.3 billion (around €963 million) in cash to the US-based company Cerner Corp. The HS business is focused on administrative hospital IT and electronic patient records, thus different from information technology that enhances the capabilities of imaging modalities and laboratory equipment. It is headquartered in Malvern, Pennsylvania, United States and employs some 6,000 employees wor ldwide with operations in the US, in Europe (particularly Germany), and in Asia. The transaction is subject to applicable regulatory approvals and planned to close during the first quarter of calendar year 2015. The transaction is fully aligned with the overall strategy of Siemens – Vision 2020. "In the recent years, we have continuously invested in our HS-portfolio and achieved significant progress on the technology side. At the same time, we realized that business success of our hospital information systems could not always keep pace with our competition", says Hermann Requardt, CEO Siemens Healthcare. "Additionally an increasing number of country-specific requirements, such as resulting from US healthcare reform, make it increasingly challenging to achieve sufficient scale effects. Going forward we will focus on the development of information systems that support our businesses in laboratory diagnostics as well as imaging and therapy." The takeover of the business by Cerner provides a positive perspect ive for customers and employees, as Cerner has a proven expertise and is one of the leading players in the market. At the same time with the divestment, Siemens Healthcare and Cerner are engaging in a strategic alliance in the field of Next Generation Healthcare IT. Next Generation Healthcare IT is one of the future focus fields of action for Siemens Healthcare.

IBM's Smarter Care: moving from the clinic to the community
September 26, 2014 Armonk, NY—“Work smarter” is an idea that's made the rounds through everything from industrial training programs to political campaigns for the last half-century. And it may be the best way to sum up the thinking behind IBM's Smarter Care Initiative. On October 20-21, attendees at the IBM Health and Social Programs Summit, to be held at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel, in Arlington, VA, will get an in-depth look at the Smarter Care initiative as conveyed through the experiences and ideas o f IBM clients, as well as thought leaders and partners from around the world. According to Farhana Alarakhiya, director of IBM's Smarter Care Business, "the focus is on care management, but not simple, clinical care management." In practical terms, what that means – and what much of the business of the Smarter Care Initiative amounts to – is identifying specific populations in need of new approaches to care delivery, then identifying and establishing alliances with an array of new institutional partners, regardless of whether they are in the public or private sectors, or whether they have traditionally provided healthcare or social support services.

Cleveland Clinic Pursues Comprehensive Visualization Strategy
October 2, 2014 Cleveland, OH—One way of looking at health IT is simply as an improved way of accessing information. But while many healthcare stakeholders might start out with that thought when they implement new IT systems, the smart ones aim for much more. At Cleveland Clinic, for example, the radiology department needed to replace a legacy PACS, and they chose Agfa HealthCare's IMPAX solution, with the company's Enterprise Imaging solution as the image 'storage container'. But according to Louis Lannum, Cleveland Clinic's director of enterprise imaging, the organization is aiming for much more than efficient storage and access to radiology images. They set their sights on the broad range of multispecialty images generated across the health system. "We're developing a visualization strategy that allows physicians to look at any multispecialty image, in clinical context with its associated report, and develop a true picture of what's going on with the patient," he said recently. "Every doctor I know is extremely visual, and now we're providing that visualization layer for them. Once physicians and practitioners and other hospital providers are able to see beyond EHR text, into a more visual world, it is going to enable better medicine, and better clinical practice." At Cleveland Clinic, which employs 2,800 physicians and scientists, as well as 11,000 nurses, Agfa HealthCare's Enterprise Imaging Platform technology is enabling a global view of patient information that can be viewed at any of 35,000 workstations. Why Doctors Must Understand Big Data
October 6, 2014 Robert Wachter, MD, has plenty to say about Big Data and the asssociated realities of quality, safety and, perhaps most important, physician responsibility. Being provocative and innovative is what Wachter – widely read at his blog, Wachter's World, and followed on Twitter (@Bob_Wachter) – is good at. Associate Chair of the Department of Medicine at University California San Francisco, Wachter is pioneer of the hospitalist field (he coined the term), a medical speciality that focuses on primary care in inpatient settings. He's a past-president of the Society of Hospital Medicine, and has helped the specialty become the fastest-growing in healthcare. Wachter is also author of a forthcoming book, due out in 2015, titled, The Digital Doctor: Hope, Hype, and Harm at the Dawn of Medicine’s Computer Age. In it, he explores the consequences, both hoped for and unintended, of the great health IT revolution. On Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Healthcare IT News Big Data & Healthcare Analytics Forum, Wachter will deliver a talk titled, "The Value Agenda: Why Quality, Safety, and Patient Satisfaction are No Longer Elective." In it, he'll discuss how physicians must make smart use of data and analytics – not just to heal their own patients, but also to help improve the prognosis of the healthcare industry itself. We spoke to Wachter recently from Boston, where he's taking a sabbatical from UCSF to finish up his book.

ONC Awards Health IT Safety Center Contract
October 9, 2014 RTI International has landed a contract with the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT to develop a roadmap for a national health IT safety center. RTI is charged with defining the focus, functions, governance and value of a new national health IT safety center. Prior work by government, industry and academia has envisioned the new center as a public-private entity that provides engagement, evidence and education around health IT safety. "Health IT is creating novel opportunities for patients and providers, while also raising new and important safety concerns," said Doug Johnston, director of health IT policy in RTI's Center for the Advancement of Health Information Technology and the project director, in a news release announcing the contract win. "As a first step, the roadmap will define a path for creating a new center that helps gather information and share learning about the safety and safe use of health IT," he added. To develop the roadmap, RTI will convene a task force of public-private stakeholders including safety researchers, patient advocates, providers, health IT vendors, medical liability and health insurers, government officials and others. The task force will provide recommendations and help build a shared awareness about safety best practices and risks involved in health IT. RTI will provide ONC with the roadmap for future development of the health IT safety center. "RTI's expertise in patient safety, health IT and safety data analysis positions us to best address how to further health IT safety through creating a roadmap using an open and transparent process, " Linda Dimitropoulos, director of RTI's Center for the Advancement of Health Information Technology, and the associate project director, said in a press statement. FCC to Hire Coordinator for Medical Body Area Networks
October 18, 2014 The Federal Communications Commission published a notice in the October 6 edition of the Federal Register that it will hire a coordinator to help facilitate the development and deployment of medical area body network (MBAN) technologies. MBAN technology is a platform for the wireless networking of multiple body-worn sensors used for measuring and recording physiological parameters and other patient information or for performing diagnostic or therapeutic functions, usually in healthcare facilities. In the notice, the FCC defines such devices as those that use or are capable of using the 2390-2400 MHz wireless band. The new coordinator will facilitate use of the MBAN frequencies — which operate in shared-use bands — as well as minimize any possible interference within the spectrum. Organizations using such technologies must register their equipment with the new MBAN coordinator, as well as seek approval for installation, testing or making any changes to their MBAN equipment. The FCC has designated the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau to select the MBAN coordinator, who must meet the following criteria:
Ability to register and maintain a database of MBAN transmitter locations and operational parameters;
Knowledge of or experience with medical wireless systems in healthcare facilities; Knowledge of or experience with AMT operations; Ability to calculate and measure interference potential between MBAN and AMT
operations and to enter into mutually satisfactory coordination agreements with the AMT coordinator;
And ability to develop procedures to ensure that registered healthcare facilities operate an MBAN consistent with the requirements.

The Big Data Shift From Predictive to Prescriptive Analytics
October 20, 2014 What will the analytics and IT infrastructure for big data ultimately look like? At Partners HealthCare, chief information officer James Noga is already envisioning that. Noga will be discussing those possibilities at the HIMSS Media and Healthcare IT News Big Data & Healthcare Analytics Forum, Nov. 20-21 at the Westin Waterfront in Boston. He will be part of the panel, “Accelerating Big Data Adoption for Patient Care: Will it Take?” on Nov. 21, from 11:45-12:30 p.m. Noga spoke with Healthcare IT News about how Partners HealthCare is approaching big data, some of the trends he sees in the field and about how he sees the CIO role when it comes to data. “There are many opportunities, I think, that are transforming our understanding of human disease for big data,” Noga said. “We can really use science coupled with both structured and unstructured data and really move in terms of advanced analytics.” Predicting to prescribing Noga views big data as an opportunity to use data not only in a predictive way – predicting readmission rates, for instance, but also in a prescriptive way. He likes to employ a travel analogy. Drivers once got maps to travel from one point to another — they basically figured it out themselves — then they went to predictive analytics to find the best route to get from point A to point B. “Then as you get into prescriptive analytics, it actually tells you on the way real time, an accident has happened and reroutes you,” said Noga.

Getting to Phoenix via Airplane: Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
serves 40 million people so it keeps busy. Being popular, and a common stop over and a hub of US Airways there are plenty of flights to choose from to get you here. The airport is just three miles from downtown so you can get to your hotel quickly and efficiently.
Ground Transportation: All major rental-car companies have desks at the airport which is separate from the terminals, served by a free shuttle bus. Taxi rates remain the same regardless of company, number of passengers or number of bags. The first mile is a staggering $5, each additional mile is $2.30 and a minimum fare is $15. Each per trip airport surcharge is $1. Limousines offer airport-to-door service and rates vary according to destination, but typically range from $35 to $85. Getting around the City: Phoenix and the surrounding cities sprawl across more than 400 square miles, so if you want to make the be although finding a parking space can be time-consuming. For the past few years Phoenix has had some of the highest car-rental rates in the country, and with taxes and surcharges at Sky Harbor Airport adding up to 50% or more, be prepared for sticker shock when you see what a car rental is going to run you. Expect to pay anywhere from $250 to $400 per week Unfortunately, Valley Metro, the Phoenix public bus system, is not very useful to tourists. It's primarily used by commuters. Local bus fare is $1.75; express bus fare is $2.75, and will get you through the downtown area. Of slightly more value to visitors is the free Downtown Area Circulator (DASH), which provides bus service within the downtown area. These buses serve regular stops every 12 minutes; they're primarily for downtown workers, but attractions along the route include the state capitol and Heritage and Science Park.
