• There are 18 major language groups• 1,000 languages and dialects that are spoken

in India• Leaving Hindi the official language.

• Remains as the dominant religion in India. • It’s a complex religion with roots in Aryan

culture• 80% of the population are Hindi, and they

believe in many Gods and reincarnation. • Karma determines the persons reincarnation.

Caste System• A system from Aryan of social classes• There are 4 basic castes that make up the

original system: Brahmans ( Priests and scholars) Kshatriyas( rulers and warriors) Vaisyas ( farmers and merchants) Sudans ( artisians and laborers)• Untouchables had the lowest status in India,

also known as the Dilits.• Each person is born in a caste with a moral

duty

Other Religions

• Jainism, Christianity, Sikhism, and Buddhism played a role in India.

• Also Islam which exerts a strong culture in influence in certain parts of the country.

• Millions of Muslims left the country after India won their independence back in 1947

• Northeastern and Northwestern is where the Muslims migrated into the subcontinent.
