Bylaw’s Revision

A special membership meeting was held in the clubhouse on February 27th to vote on a proposed amendment to the Bylaws Revision #1.

After a special membership meeting in November, a group of residents formed to develop additional changes to the revised Bylaws. The group placed proposals on Yahoo, solicited comments and suggestions from all the homeowners and held day and evening workshops to present, discuss, and amend the proposed changes. The Heritage Oaks HOA board agreed to call a special meeting to vote on the recommendations.

The February 27th meeting approved Amendment #1, of the Revision #1 of the Bylaws. Changes covered meetings, directors and officers, and expenses and loans.

from the president and a financial report was presented by the treasurer.

The president listed the slate of board officers that had previously been nominated and asked for nominations from the floor before the vote. A resident nominated Bob McCormick as a write-in candidate for the one-year term. The vote was called.

While the ballots were being counted, committee chairpersons introduced their members and presented a summary of the committee’s accomplishments in 2012.Ron Landgraf, president, reviewed the Reserve Fund and also thanked everyone who had any part of making the Heritage Oaks community a better place.

The election results were then announced with Michael Cox and Barbara Rauch elected for two-year terms and Dee Nafarrate for the one-year term.

The new board was seated and Pat McCutchin was selected president, Dee Nafarrate, vice-president, Michael Cox, secretary and Barbara Rauch, treasurer.

The Care Team Learns about Hospice

The Care Team met on March 13 to hear Michael Turner, the administrator of Wesleyan Hospice, speak about Hospice and its purpose. He explained that Hospice is a patient-centered and family-oriented holistic approach to care for those in the advanced stages of a life-limiting illness. He stated that there are 12 Hospice organizations in Georgetown, some non-profit and some for-profit; Medicare is accepted by all of them.

Mr. Turner suggested that anyone seeking Hospice care for themselves or a loved one interview at least 3 Hospice organizations before choosing the one that best provides the care and service that they are looking for. This was a very pertinent presentation since several of our residents have recently reached a point in their lives where Hospice care was needed.

Women of Heritage OaksTravel to Marble Falls

By Janine Alford

On Thursday, March 21, forty-two ladies carpooled to Marble Falls for a shopping adventure and lunch. First, we got a glimpse of the aftermath of the 77-year old U.S. 281 bridge that fell from explosives into Lake Marble Falls this past Sunday. After our delicious lunch at River City Grille, we headed over to Pottery Ranch for an adventure in finding interior decorations as well as décor and pottery for our landscaping needs.

On our way inside Pottery Ranch, each of the ladies received a free flower pot courtesy of store owner, Scott Kirkpatrick. Everyone was then given a chance to go on an Easter egg hunt to find a hidden treasure - a “Buckshot” shot glass. After receiving a few hints on where they may be hidden, our outdoor shot glass was found by Patsy Blackburn and the indoor shot glass was found by Kathy Scholl’s friend, Vickie Fisk. They each received a $25.00 gift certificate.

Lots of wares were carried back to each of the cars. A good time was had by all.

Care Team Contacts

Care Team - Watching Over Heritage Oaks’ Residents by Linda Miller

The Care Team now has 21 members, representing all of the streets in Heritage Oaks. Care Team members greet new residents on their streets and give them the “Welcome to Heritage Oaks” packets developed by Marie Blom and the Communication Committee. These contain information about the Heritage Oaks Care Team, a voluntary Resident Information Sheet (for use by the Care Team representatives only in case of an emergency), information about the Yahoo site, a HO Badge Order Form, a Fitness Center Waiver Form, RAC Approval Application form, Emergency Warranty Service contacts from Jimmy Jacobs (for new homes only), and miscellaneous helpful information and telephone numbers.

At their meeting on March 13, members discussed their roles as part of the Care Team. Marie reinforced that they are not only the welcome committee for each street, but are also the contact persons if a need arises in a household within their neighborhood. They might help, for example, by coordinating meals for a household for a limited time in cases of illness or death, providing an occasional ride to a physician, contacting family members in an emergency, or collecting mail from the boxes or newspapers from the driveway when residents are unable to do so themselves. However, as a Care Team member they should not do anything that might put them personally at risk (such as helping to get someone up who has fallen) nor are they expected to provide long term help in the way of meals and rides. Marie has collected information on local resources that are available for such longer term needs and has shared this with the Care Team. Contact the representative for your street if this type of information would be helpful to you.

Heritage Needle & Thread

Busy Year Ahead for Needle & Threadby Marilyn Richards

Heritage Oaks Needle and Thread members had a good time making ladder yarn necklaces at the March meeting. Marilyn Richards showed the group how easy it was to complete a necklace. Member Debbie Cox and her daughter Sami finished their necklaces by the time the meeting was over at 11:45.

For those of you not part of the group, please join us. We’re open to suggestions for various topics each month.

The programs for the remainder of the year are:

April 8 -- Field trip to Fredericksburg. Some of us plan to visit Pocket Full of Posies, a quilting fabric store. Others plan to visit Der Kuchen Laden, the best little Kitchen Store in Texas. There are many different things to do and see in Fredericksburg – join us!

May 13 -- Swap/sell day. Look for flyers on the mailboxes and in the clubhouse soon explaining this event. Used sewing machines, sewing equipment, and other needlework items will be available for sale or swap. Everyone is invited to participate in this event.

June 10 – Planning meeting for the upcoming November 11 Craft Fair.

July 8 – Work day.

August 12 – Trip to Salado to visit the Sewing Basket to check out their gorgeous fabrics, and then we'll choose a place to go to lunch. Salado is such a great place to go and shop and eat!

September 9 -- Needle & Thread University. Learn how to make necklaces, scarves, ornaments and other interesting things.

October 14 – Craft Fair work day.

November 11 – Needle & Thread Craft Fair.

December 9 -- Christmas luncheon and gift exchange.

March Social - Green Beer and hoGGS

On Friday, March 15th, the HOGGs (Heritage Oaks Golf Gaggle) hosted their 5th Annual St. Patrick's Day Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner which was attended by 130 Heritage Oaks residents. The feast consisted of corned beef and vegetables cooked up and served by the HOGGs, green beer, and many fabulous salads and appetizers brought by our residents. The HOGGs also served up apple pie for dessert.

Shamus O'Drewitt was the emcee, and Paddy Froude served as Kitchen Captain and Head Chef. Nearly all the HOGGs helped put on this great, annual event and deserve thanks from all of us. A putting contest was also held, and several great door prizes were given out.

Having just returned from a 7-day Caribbean cruise, 46 happy HO homeowners were all smiles. From the start of the trip with a charter bus from the Clubhouse right to the Galveston pier, to the disembarkation and return one week later, everyone agreed it was a fantastic trip and we should do it again!

The Royal Caribbean cruise visited the lovely ports Cozumel, Grand Cayman and Jamaica with several fun sea days in between. We had great weather, calm seas, fantastic food, exciting onboard shows and tons of camaraderie including each evening, dining time together in front of five large windows overlooking the sea.

Everyone dressed in beautiful style (check out the photos) on formal nights, with a few fun renegade antics like Mike McMahon’s flip-flop “dress shoes” with his tuxedo and Tom Fowler’s ever-present camera.

Being able to get to know each other a little better and having a chance to just stop and have a drink with one of your neighbors easily found anywhere on the ship, was great fun. All agreed we definitely want to do it again soon and hopefully have even more of our residents to join in the fun. Next time we need a good karaoke act to support – any volunteers?

Entertainment Committee: AND THE SURVEY SAYS . . .by Anna Lowary

Last month, the Entertainment Committee asked you what kinds of events you would like to see us bring to the Heritage Oaks clubhouse and we were very pleased that we received 54 responses to our questions. You have proven that residents are willing to share their opinions and like to use an online tool to respond. We did have two residents who chose the manual survey in the office but one of them is a new resident who doesn’t yet have internet access.

First, 75% of you voted to hold the entertainment events on a quarterly basis, while 13% of you wanted a Bimonthly event and 11% preferred a monthly event. It also sounds like you prefer a higher-quality means of entertainment, with the majority (64%) offering to pay $15 or less to attend. Fourteen residents (or 26%) opted to pay less than $10 and 3 people (5%) would like for us to keep it under $5. (For you math-checkers, those don’t add up to 100% because some residents didn’t answer those questions!)

Now it’s time for the fun facts. The most popular events were a Wine Tasting or a Casino Night. So that no one is quick to judge what kind of community we have here, these were quickly followed by a Comedian and Oldies Music and Dancing. There were a good number of responses regarding many of the other events, so we will share the details with you in a graph.

We hope you stay tuned and look forward to our first event - A wine tasting scheduled for June 2. We’ll plan our second entertainment event during the month of October. Thanks once again for your feedback!

On the Mats by Joyce Helm

The Heritage Oaks Rise and Shine yoga class (Friday mornings at 8:15 AM) started off with a bang. Who knew there were so many early morning folks just waiting for the chance for a good stretch and some interaction with their neighbors? It’s never too late to join this group – or either of the other two classes, for that matter.

Spinal Sense

You maybe have sensed that you’re shorter at the end of the day than you were on waking. In truth, your spine does compress throughout the day because of the force of gravity. One of the benefits of practicing yoga is that it helps relieve the symptoms (pressure or pain) of that relentless gravity pull.

If your back and neck are healthy, you might try the following in the comfort of your home at the end of a long and (possibly) sedentary day. (Caution, if you’ve had back or neck surgery, just stick with your prescribed physical therapy program.)

Sit in a chair with your feet on the floor, hip distance apart. Place the heels of your palms on the tops of your legs, as close to your hips as possible. Allow your shoulder blades to rise up to your ears as you push down firmly with your palms. Keep your head and neck in a neutral, balanced position. Increase the hand pressure until you feel your spine lengthen in response. Breath naturally for five to 10 breaths or until the discomfort in your back melts away. Then release the downward pressure of your hands and relax your shoulders away from your ears. Before letting your back slide into its normal “slump,” take a moment to enjoy the space you’ve just created in your spine and make a date with yourself to do this gentle back stretch every day.

TASTE OF TUSCANY in the Texas Hill Country

by Joyce Helm

The Women of Heritage Oaks (the WHO) will experience a “Taste of Tuscany” on April 18. We will visit The Vineyard at Florence for lunch and, if desired, some wine tasting of their locally produced wine. All their Estate wines are produced from its 32-acre on site vineyard and its labels identify “Williamson County” as the place of origin. A bottle of wine purchased on site would make a unique gift to visiting friends or relatives.

The Vineyard at Florence offers a relaxing lunch setting with a variety of food options, from paninis to salads to soups, and the choice of outdoor patio at the edge of the vineyards or indoor seating.

We’ll depart from the Clubhouse parking area at 11:00 on April 18 for the short (25 minute) drive to Florence. And if we’re lucky, an added benefit might be some wildflower sightings.

Fliers and additional details will follow. In the meanwhile, check out their website for its menu and pictures of its Tuscany ambience: thevineyardatflorence.com.

Opens April 19

Come join us for a game of 42by Dennis Klenz

Every Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 a group gathers in the club house ballroom for a dominoes game called 42. We are always looking for new players so, please come and join us, whether you already know the game or would just like to learn. We also play other domino games such as Moon if not enough players are available to play 42.

42, also known as Texas 42, is a trick-taking game played with a standard set of double six dominoes. 42 is often referred to as the "national game of Texas", and continues to be very popular in much of the state. Tournaments are held in many towns, and the State Championship tournament is held in Hallettsville, Texas the first Saturday of March each year. In 2011 it was designated the official State Domino Game of Texas.

The game is played by four people, in teams of two. The object of the game is to be the first team to reach seven "marks" (points). The game consists of a number of hands, each of which is worth one or more marks, depending on the bid. Before commencing play, each player will bid the number of points they are going to try to win by catching tricks (see scoring, below). The bidder determines what to bid by estimating how many tricks will be lost along with the number of count dominoes (see below) that will be lost. The minimum bid is 30. A player may also pass (make no bid). If all players pass, the dealer is forced to bid.

There are 42 points in the game (one point for each of the 7 tricks, plus 35 points from the 6-4, 5-5, 3-2, 4-1, and 5-0 dominoes), the maximum bid possible is 42, with one exception: a player may bid 84, which means (like 42) that the player must catch all tricks, and the results of the tricks will be stacked atop another as they are played, so as to prevent the players from seeing what has already been introduced into play. The benefit of bidding "84" versus only "42" is that if successful, the bidder wins two marks for the game instead of only one.

The winning bidder then designates his trump, which can consist of calling a particular suit trumps; doubles as trumps, or "follow me" (also known as "no trump," in which there is no trump suit). Play then proceeds to the left of the person who played. Each player must follow suit, if possible. When led, each domino is considered to belong to the suit of its higher end, unless that domino contains the number of the trump suit, in which case it is considered a member of the trump suit. The double of any suit is the highest-ranking member of that suit, followed by the highest number on the non-suit side. The highest number of the leading suit wins, unless a trump is played, in which case the highest trump wins. The winner of the trick takes the dominoes into their possession and leads on the next trick. Play continues until the bidding team has made their contract, or else is "set" (denied the possibility of winning) by the non-bidding team. At that time, the appropriate team is awarded one or more marks.

The primary method of communicating information to and between homeowners at Heritage Oaks is through the internet. This is the quickest and most economical way. Homeowners are encouraged to use the internet, but basic information is available on the bulletin board in the clubhouse.

Heritage Oaks Yahoo Group

Check out the Heritage Oaks website at finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/heritageoaksgeorgetown/

If you would like to view the entire website and receive and send emails to residents, you must first become a member of Yahoo.com. Go to Yahoo.com and select “Sign Up” in the Sign In box. Complete the form and select “Create My Account”.

Then you must request to become a member of the Heritage Oaks Yahoo Group. Complete a “Request to Be Added to the Yahoo Groups” form that is available in the clubhouse and leave it in the “completed forms” box in the clubhouse.

After you have become a member, there are several options to choose from at the home page. If you are looking for details of an event, you can find them here. Click on Messages to read current messages your fellow home owners have posted. You may add messages of general interest to other members. This Group is not to be used for passing on jokes, offering political commentary, airing neighbor-to-neighbor issues, etc. It is for the mutual benefit of all our residents, so please keep the entire community in mind when posting messages, events, photos, etc.

The files option leads you to “in a Nutshell” copies, Heritage Oaks Homeowner’s Association Documents and Recipes from Heritage Oaks Kitchens. The Photos section includes pictures from past events and activities. You may add your own photos.

The Database section includes a file of referrals to entities reviewed by residents. The “Resident List” includes the name, address, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses of most of the Heritage Oaks homeowners.

If you are not listed and would like to be included, please call Janine Alford at 868-3321 or email her at [email protected]. Please provide her with your information and permission to be added to the list.

If you are currently on the list, but if something needs updating, please let her know.

The Heritage Oaks Master Calendar can also be found on the website. You should check it often for updates, changes and additions. If you have any questions about the Master Calendar or would like to add, delete or change an event, please contact Sharon Drewitt at 240-5678 or email [email protected].

Bulletin Boards

There is a bulletin board located in the hobby/library room in the clubhouse. There are also bulletin boards at each mailbox kiosk. Residents are urged to use this board to post announcements for upcoming Heritage Oaks events and activities. Postings will be removed after the event or activity. There are two bulletin boards located above the water fountains near the restrooms which are used for official notifications and information from the Heritage Oaks Homeowners Association.

“in a Nutshell”The newsletter is published monthly, both elec-

tronically and printed. The newsletter is placed in the files section of the Yahoo Group. To view it online, you must be a member of the heritageoaksgeorgetown Yahoo Group. A message is sent to all members after the monthly posting. Black and white printed copies can be found in the Hobby Room. Please drop 50 cents into the can provided to help cover printing costs.

Those who do not have access to a computer can have it delivered to their homes for an annual fee for printing. Contact Janine Alford 868-3321; [email protected]
