NAPLAN testing I want to say how proud I am of our students; all students from Grades 2 to 6 have undertaken NAPLAN spelling, grammar and punctuation and writing tests today. Tomorrow is Reading and Thursday is Numeracy (maths). The Grade 3 and 5 tests will be sent off for official correcting; the Grade 2, 4 and 6 tests are the official tests from last year, which will allow us to compare how they went last year to this year. If you are interested in your childs comparisons, please come and see me (give me a week to correct them and compare them though). I want to reiterate that we do not place a huge amount of pressure on the kids about their NAPLAN results; we just ask that they approach them like they do all their other work. Volunteers Week Next Tuesday at 11.10am the staff will be hosting a morning tea for all our amazing volunteers. If you are one of our fantastic helpers, please come and join us. Name callingWe have had a few issues with students, particularly in the senior classroom, calling other students names. From the outside it looks really innocent as they are usually just a play on their realname, however some student do not like the nickname given to them. If you hear your child referring to another student by a nickname please correct them. As many of the students are not wanting to rockthe friendship boatsthey are not saying they dont like it and pretend that they do. For this reason we have completely stopped the nicknames. Timetable changes update I am amazed at how enthused our students are with the Brain Gym sessions (even the senior kids are loving it). The new timetable has been implemented without any issues. Even I dont notice the change to the lunchtime eating time. Woodwork The Grade 2/3 and Grade 4/5/6 students have started their woodwork lessons with Andrew Verschoor. The students have chosen their woodwork projects. We are currently working on pencil cases. Cooking Term 2 at GDPS is whole school cooking. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to work in small groups and to learn basic cooking skills. The cost of the woodwork, cooking and gardening program are partly covered by the school fees. We charge $51.50 per student for all these programs. If you have paid your school fees, these costs are completely covered. As this is not a compulsory program, unfortunately the students who do not pay are unable to participate. Patrice is sending home accounts this Thursday. Please have these finalised by Tuesday next week, the 21 st of May, before next week s cooking and wood work sessions.

Volunteers Week Next Tuesday at 11.10am the staff will be hosting a morning tea for all our amazing volunteers. If you are one of our fantastic helpers, please come and join us.

Name ‘calling’ We have had a few issues with students, particularly in the senior classroom, calling other students names. From the outside it looks really innocent as they are usually just a play on their ‘real’ name, however some student do not like the nickname given to them. If you hear your child referring to another student by a nickname please correct them. As many of the students are not wanting to ‘rock’ the friendship ‘boats’ they are not saying they don’t like it and pretend that they do. For this reason we have completely stopped the nicknames.

Timetable changes update I am amazed at how enthused our students are with the Brain Gym sessions (even the senior kids are loving it). The new timetable has been implemented without any issues. Even I don’t

notice the change to the lunchtime eating time.

CRAZY HAIR DAY Wow!! Our Junior School Council crazy hair day was a great success with nearly the entire student population coming to school with some fantas-tic hair styles. A big thankyou to parents and friends who put a huge effort into creating these masterpieces for their kids. We raised $50.90 which will go towards purchasing some new balls and equipment for the mud kitchen. Our next Junior School Council event will be on Friday June 22nd which is a “Dress like a pirate or Princess day”. Money raised from this will go towards the kids cancer project. PARENTS CLUB NEWS Hello Parents & Friends! Last Friday we had the Parents Club Mother’s Day Stall and what a great morning it was. The students had alot of fun choosing items for their Mums and loved ones and were very excited to show us their chosen gifts. The Mother’s Day Stall raised $321 for the fundraising account. Thank you to all the families for supporting this great little shopping experience for the kids, and to all the volunteers who assisted with setup and selling of the items. It was a team effort and greatly appreciated. Canteen items have changed a little this term. We have deleted fish fingers and carrots sticks, as these were not popular items. We have added mini corn on the cobs for 50c each. There will be butter available, if the students would like to add it to their corns. If you have any ideas for the canteen menu then please let the school or myself know. We are always open to suggestions. Thank you to the parents who have helped us with canteen duty over the last few weeks. It has been great to be able to share the workload around. If you would like to volunteer your time for canteen, or breakfast club…be it a morning a week, month or term then please get in touch with myself or Christine. Breakfast Club days are Tuesday-baked beans, Wed & Thurs - cereal/porridge or fruit salad. Many thanks to the parents/friends who come in before school begins to get breakfast ready for kids. We are organising a special lunch order day on the 25th May which will again be hot dogs. Hot dogs are always a winner with the kids (and they are nice and easy for us to manage). Another special lunch order day will be at the end of term which will be a choice of nachos or hot dogs. More information about the special lunch order days will follow in future newsletters. We still have a few “bottoms” available in the uniform shop for the discount price of $5 per item. We are selling these below cost as we need to shift these out. Come on in and speak to one of the teachers or Patrice in the office if you would like to take advantage of this SUPER SPECIAL. Good luck to all the students participating in the cross country regionals next week. Next Parents Club meeting is scheduled for the 21st May at 9am. Would be great to see some new faces pop on in. Children are welcome to come along and play or draw whilst parents have an informal chat.
