My name is Gorka Beitia Zarandona. i am a young architect from Bilbao.

after a great year working for StUdio MakS in rotterdam i feel that it is time for me to take a step forward and find a place where i can continue learning as an architect.

My desire is to reach a position where i could commit for the following years and get steeped in the practice of ar-chitecture.

i am interested in the creative process and aesthetics, both conceptually and from a practical approach in the exe-cution. i consider myself a passio- nate architect who fully believes in the praxis, theory and practice should be interconnected.

a holon is something that is simultane-ously a whole and a part, and this is

my perception of architecture today, as a holarchic entity. the value of every person derives from their uniqueness and their ability to capture and interact with others to make use of the fruit of that singularity.

in a young office like StUdio MakS i worked in very diverse projects and i had to step up and be responsible at different levels. i was a solid contribu-tor in the design process, generally working on construction plans and fi-nal illustrations.

this portfolio is a brief selection of what i consider to be the most relevant sample that has contributed to my ed-ucation and sensitivity as an architect and designer. it mirrors my personal interests in the last period of my archi-tecture career.

Park Groot Vijversburg was established in the 19th century and contains a rich history of flora and fauna. a historical villa is cen-trally placed in the park. throughout the year, the park hosts many events such as international exhibitions of contemporary art, musical performances, church services and excursions.

the goal is to design a new visitor center, renovate the historical villa, develop a floating stage for performances, and cre-ate glasshouses for the botanical gardens.

the visitor center is positioned next to the historical villa. in plan, the form is as if pulled tightly in three directions while maintaining a required main hall. as the main hall stretches, it gradually becomes a path – naturally transforming into a park trail. this slowly pulled wing loses its qual-ity of interior space as one progresses along it, leaving only its wall, until it finally disappears into the park environment.

in collaboration with Japanese architect Junya ishigami StUdio MakS is now buil-dong the glass pavilion and finalizing the villa restoration. i worked on the design and construction of this glass visitor center. i was mainly in-volved in the 3d-modelling and the check-ing of the 3d construction drawings, being responsible for the final geometry design.

i had meetings with the engineer in charge to achieve the best balance between our design proposal and efficient solutions. My role in the project also has touched other areas such as the 19th century villa resto-ration, the new stage design and site visits for examination of the villa, as well as new renderings as the one shown below.

through this project i have understood the complexity of architecture execution, the necessity of attention to detail and precise organization. the project will be completed January 2015.

our aim was to design an environment at the Salone in Milan that would accommo-date people’s needs for social interaction and information exchange during this week long design fair.

the table hides wireless charging pads integrated in the table surface, so visitors can re-charge their phones and tablets by simply laying them on top of the table sur-face. WiFi signal enhancers were also inte-grated into the piece of furniture to provide better internet connection.

the 70 m2 untreated poplar wood top was balanced on thin steel legs, with the sur-face snaking around the former industrial building, widening and thinning at vari-ous points. Changes in depth and niches formed by bends created areas for group discussions next to spaces for individual work, with seating provided by stools made of the same material.

i was deeply involved in the design, which we had to completely restart due to a re-duction of exhibition space and budget. initially the table was supposed to be three times bigger.

as part of the design team i became in charge of the production of the table, hav-ing to research materials and testing dif-ferent structural systems. in conversation with Fiction Factory, the company that built the table, we came to a simple solution of poplar wood pieces and steel frames. i de-veloped the execution file for the CnC. i also visited the Factory several times as a production supervisor and helped the car-penters with the wood job. Later in Milano i supervised the montage of the installation.

this project made me realize the impor-tance of collaboration and dialogue be-tween designer and construction company, and how to deal with the different parties in the production of such an installation.

How to develop a project with a unique but also neutral character, which reflects the anonymity of an institutional building while the quality of the landscape respected? We decided that a small, flexible construc-tion system is more suitable than a large building complex.

We tried to support the spatial idea of a building for alzheimer’s and dementia pa-tients with human scale, thinking about the individual needs of the patients while living in community.

due to the site configuration of the land, the building volume should remain com-pact. and due to the complex structures that these buildings require it should be easily expandable in the future.

the project consists of smaller building units forming a joint complex. the units are free on the landscape and they con-nect by narrow passageways. the heart of

the building consists of a courtyard with a beautiful garden. it allows users to experi-ence nature and it acts as a calm core for residents, employees and visitors.

the building complex is set like a small village. the open structure of the urban grid is integrated into the environment and it allows autonomy, growth and future changes.

i worked in all stages of the design for this competition. Given the complexity and strict inflexibility of the program i was asked to create new smart solutions for a psychiatric building. during the design pro-cess i built huge number of models. Later for the competition panels i was in charge of the main images and drawings.

through this project i learned to deal with specific and complex programs and how to translate ideas into form.

the Prix de rome 2014 assignment is to re-envision the Hoogstraat as a “city street“ and to commemorate its early beginnings.

For the last 75 years, rotterdam has en-joyed a period of renewal and growth, pre-senting itself as a strong resilient city. But now most of the post-war land plots have been filled, and change and growth have slowed down like in many other traditional european cities. With free lots now a lux-ury, rotterdam must shift towards a new strategy for maintaining its invaluable im-age of a progressive city.

We analysed the city, its map, its spaces, its past and present plans. What emerged from the data is a void plan illustrating spaces that can be utilized for change.

these voids can be used by programmes derived from the contemporary needs of the city and its citizens, always conceived with a limited life-span in mind. the void

thus becomes a laboratory for possible modes of civic life, a new artificial urban nature. We imagine these programmes to be a myriad of systems including new ecol-ogies rather than building projects alone.

as for Hoogstraat, by activating specific voids along its axis it is reinterpreted as a cross section of diverse and flexible en-vironments. the image of Hoogstraat will continue to change over time, always up-dating to contemporary needs and trends. these project proposals, that will occupy several voids, show mere programmatic structures, not spatial designs.

P.d.r. is the most prestigious award for under 40 y.o. dutch architects. in the 2014 edition we competed against 7 other participants. i had a significant role in the conception and diverse project designs. i worked on the preparation of the 3 x 1,5 meter paper model and i was put in charge of all the images for the final panels.

For the 2014 tile award we propose a tidal landscape for children made of land, water and plants, in which the relation between the different elements is under constant negotiation. in this dynamic exist-ence many natural conditions are created and un-created. We studied the natural processes and appearances of tidal land-scapes and transformed our findings in a man-made environment that can be repro-duced in any kind of setting.

our plaza-like proposal has hills and val-leys, lakes and gardens. its appearance changes throughout the year; in the dryer season the plaza is empty, only to fill up again when it rains. it can also be irrigated in the summer by numerous small springs, to provide refreshment in times of heat.

the form and layout of these landscape re-fer to similar situations in nature in which water and land exist in an intertwined bal-ance. the patterns that arise from these dynamics were studied and translated into

more abstract graphical patterns; consecu-tively different types of tiles from agrob-Buchtal‘s existing tile collection were used to recreate these patterns. By optimizing the differences in colours, size and thick-ness a new and natural landscape was cre-ated.

For this competition we explored new ap-plications and geometries applied to the urban landscape. after various tests i de-signed the final geometry of the plaza and created the main illustrations for the com-petition panels.

i learned to properly organize a compe-tition in a very short notice. it became a challenge in itself because the majority of the design responsibility was shared be-tween me and my colleague Jinsun Baik.

We were awarded with the 1st Prize new-comer award 2014 agrob Buchtal. a 5x5 m2 prototype was built for a future expo.

institute for architecture and creativity. thesis project based on a new holarchic architecture. the project proposes the transformation of an old factory now in ru-ins in a degraded industrial zone. the com-plex is formed by eight different buildings that are grouped within three cores: one educational, one for research and offices and the last one for cultural purposes.

this thesis project investigates the com-plex relations of spaces and flows within a building and the possibility of a holisitic understanding of them, as unique entities and as a whole.

through the development of this project i had the opportunity to learn how to or-ganize extensive complex programs while maintaining a clear idea in the whole de-sign process. this is something that i con-sider vital in architecture nowadays.

as architects we must learn to organize, manage and design complex systems and be able to translate this ideas into space and life.

Tokyo Replay Center

this project follows the urban fabric of akihabara but stays hidden inside a large opening of the tokyo skyline. aesthetically topped by a mosaic, a plaza surmounts a podium flanked by two emerging towers of stacked zashiki boxes. the project delimits a space of calm within the chaos of a city. it generates a void energized by tradition, a redoubt where the mind plays.

the aim of this competition was to develop a new leisure center in tokyo. the center

had to fit with the lifestyle of Japanese so-ciety while offering a new method of en-tertainment designed especially for them.

through this collaboration i learnt how to transform a strong simple idea into a pro-ject efficiently. First day of discussion we came out with the concept of an empty void and two towers facing each other. during a two week collaboration we evolved the idea and ended up with a final design that respected Japanese tradition.

Paris Market Lab

the aim of this competition was to develop a new type of gastronomic space next to the Saint Germain Market in Paris.

the project should work as a school by day and as a three Michelin star restaurant by night. Baudelaire’s flâneur, Walter Benja-min’s Parisian gallery tours and François rabelais’ Gargantua were inspiration for this project as we tried to create unique-ness into the Parisian urban context.

We established a conceptual paradox con-fronting monolithic complexity versus mo-lecular simplicity. the competition strictly asked for the mixture of two programs and we tried to execute this with a metal-lic veil around the building. this formed a two sided Janus face: one transparent and light by day and a more dense, foggy and mysterious one by night.

La Casa encendida art center in Madrid organizes annually an expo gallery compe-tition for young curators.

aesthetics philosopher Garazi Pascual was in charge of the art-work selection while i designed the installation space. We opted for simplicity, trying to emphasize the cen-trifugal force of the space while highlight-ing its continuity and fluidity. Very cheap materials should be used, just white round corner walls and a bench around all the perimeter.

this multidisciplinary collaboration made me understand the importance of deal-ing with multiple intellectual perspectives while confronting an architectural project.

in my opinion this is the base for experi-mentation and real innovation in this new era of architecture and design.

ignacio Zuloaga Spanish painter ’s mu-seum extension at his family house in Zu-maia. Located into the gardens the project is divided into three separate buildings according to their function, combining the entrances.

the concept suggests a filter between the sky and the underground. entering the complex through the main triangular build-ing which is light and clear just to go down the cave, a series of dark galleries where Zuloagas’ work is hidden.

i consider this project to be a good sample of one of my first tests towards a concep-tual simplicity. From the beginning i stood for lightness and functionality in the most practical way, not reducing the program but building a synthesis of it.
