THE TECHNIQUES USED TO PRODUCE THE GORILLAZ:

At the beginning the Gorillaz started as a 2-D band. However as technology advanced they were able to animate their characters in 3-D.

First song they created using 3-D Animation was “Feel Good inc.” and their newest album “Plastic Beach”

They use a transition between 2-D and 3-D, which highlights important scenes like disturbing imagery. An example was Melancholy Hill.

It’s got continuity between each video, which tells a story for the audience.

Looks and moves unnaturally creating a disturbing feeling compared to the rest which is in 2-D

Clearly shows the contrast between 2-D and 3-D animation.

CATALOGUE OF WORKGorillaz have a huge range of work.

.They released there first video in 2001: “Clint eastwood” When they first started making the videos they were all2-D animations.

.As time has gone on their animations have become More advanced now using 3D animations there videosHave become extremely detailed. In my opinion some Of their best work was from their newest album “plasticBeach” such as “Stylo” a song that incorporates real Footage as well as their animations.

INFLUENCE OF THEIR WORK ON AUDIENCE

Gorillaz are the most well known animated band and have been put in the Guinness book

of world records as the most successful virtual band.

There album “demon days” released in 2005 went five times platinum in the UK and there

debut album “Gorillaz” sold over seven million copies.

This has led to a huge increase in popularity of the idea of a virtual band because of how

unique the band is. This has cause the band to get hugely popular.

Throughout the music videos there is a sort of story, this story ends with the song “on

melancholy hill” this music video incorporates all of the previous music videos. For example

in melancholy hill you see a red eyed man with a mask on, This is from the song “Rhinestone

eyes” and also you see jellyfish from the song “jellyfish superfast” and many more.

THE USE OF AFFORDANCES OF ANIMATION:

-They are used to express different feelings from the song.

Here there is an intire graveyard coming out of theGround.“Zombie Hip-Hop” is an invented ganre of music and it uses very spontaneous animations to express deeper feelings like

EXAMPLES OF THE “12 PRINCIPLES OF ANIMATION :

An example of “secondary action” where a ghosted image repeats the actions of the main body.

This is also an example of slow in and slow out. This scene exaggerates the time he is in the air compared to the time he is on the ground while he s running. ( character slows down in mid-air and speeds up when stepping on the ground.

Page 8: Gorillaz

An example of an “arc” where the falling-back character follows an arc shape during the motion of falling.

Here is an example of “pose to pose” animation. This is a scene where the monkeys follow the human figure. The animators have animated the key poses, and then have filled the gaps in between with more frames to make the scene flow more smoothly.

Final example is one of an “appeal shot” where this Spirit charater is presented as easygoing and friendly offering a fist-bump. He is the main subject in this frame and gives out the emotion that he is being presented and the director is giving him a glorifying moment, to make him leave an impression on the audience.
