Disney ImagiNations space design

In February 2009, a group of three JHU students and I

entered Disney’s 2009 ImagiNations Design Competition.

Our entry was based on Pixar’s animated film Wall-E. We

proposed a new program called “Go Green with Wall-E.”

Our program consisted of Wall-E robots roaming parks and

collecting recycling from families. Additionally, we imagined

an Axiom Restaurant where families could experience eating

Buy-N-Large food and learning about energy conservation.

Using Google SketchUp we sketched a

simplified version of our Axiom Restaurant. The restaurant exterior

would be very similar to the Pixar film and would also have a self sustaining

eco-system inside to teach children

about the importance of recycling and taking care of our planet. The space

imagined was designed to be interactive and fun families to enjoy

the Wall-E experience and still have an

important message behind it.

Center Line Studios space design

During the summer of 2008, I was an intern at

Center Line Studios, a professional, customer-driven company that excels in creating quality

theatrical scenery for various venues. While a member of the construction team, I assisted the

head designer with the “In The Heights” Tony

Awards project, taking CAD drawings and building the set to the desired specifications.

This experience allowed me to be hands on and learn how the Broadway industry takes their set

designs from paper to final display.

Skills: Construction, CAD Analysis

Senior Design Project product development

During my senior year at JHU my design team was

assigned a project sponsored by a start-up company in Connecticut, Innovoducts, LLC. Our task was to

imagine being able to open a bottle of soda, a medicine container, or a jar of baby food with one

hand.! This new cap was required to fully seal in

the content; had to be reusable; and child-proof if applicable. Our design process involved

prototyping, materials analysis, manufacturing, and injection molding. Currently the HANDYcap

design is patent pending and is due to be complete

by early May.

Skills: CAD, Materials, Prototyping, Market Research

In Spring 2009, I participated in a robotics competition sponsored by JHU. The challenge was to design and build a robot that can maneuver itself from space A to F (see schematic). To travel from space B to E

the robot would have to move along a pole that is suspended 18” and has a rubber obstacle in the middle of the pole (see schematic). The final product used an Ardunio controller and maneuvered itself across the pole in brachiating style, utilizing 7 motors. YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fO9Wevj_K0Y

AdvantageUs was my first design project that I worked on while at JHU. The project was to build a tennis ball launcher that could shoot a ball into a basket at 3 various

distances. As a team we decided to use air pressure as our force and would vary our launch distance by maintaining a constant angle and varying the amount of pressure. The key to our design was through our means of releasing the air pressure. In order to generate enough force we needed

to release the air very quickly, thus we used a standard sprinkler valve and modified it to release the air via a trigger. The final product was very successful. Using air pressure as our force allowed for our tennis ball launch to be easily repeatable with little to no error.

Skills: Materials (PVC), Mechanisms Analysis (Sprinkler)

Marketing communication design

During the summer of 2007, I took on a class project to improve upon the Guitar Hero franchise from a marketing perspective. I first studied their current game

at the time, Guitar Hero II. I examined competitors, conducted a SWOT analysis, discussed target markets, and analyzed pricing and distribution channels.

My study recommendation was to implement product

diversity within the Guitar Hero franchise. The product would be a state-of-the-art portable video game console for Guitar Hero use only. The portable guitar would have downloadable songs, plug and play capabilities and create your own songs. This product would reach out to

customers who were not willing to purchase an XBox 360 or PlayStation 3 just to play Guitar Hero.

Videography communication design

Video editing requires one to

understand the correlation between

image and sound. With 8 years of

practice I have directed and edited a

variety of videos. Using Final Cut Pro

editing software, I have developed the

ability to create high quality videos,

recently at a professional level. I have

made a variety of video types such as

tributes, parodies, plot-based and music

videos.

Stand-Up Comedy communication design

G. Mack

In January 2009 I began writing and performing

original “clean” stand-up routines. Over time I

learned how to continuously develop my jokes and

generate an enjoyable atmosphere for the audience.

Most notable performances:

- DC Improv Comedy Club

- Baltimore Comedy Factory

- 2009/2010 JHU Comedy Shows ( 600+ audiences)

-! Opening for the Dan Levy Show (1000+ audience)
