Biographical Note

Dr. Edwin E. Gordon (1927-2015) is an internationally known researcher, teacher, author, editor, andlecturer in the field music education. He is most well-known for his work in music aptitude testing, thecreation of music learning theory, and the concept of audiation. He earned his bachelor's degree stringbass performance (1952) and master's degree in string bass performance and music literature (1953)from the Eastman School of Music, his master's in education from Ohio University (1955), and his PhDfrom the University of Iowa (1958). A prolific public speaker, he delivered over 600 lectures on topicspertaining to music education between the years 1962 and 2013.

Upon completing his education, Gordon taught as Professor of Music and Education at the Universityof Iowa (1958-1972), Professor of Music and Director of Music Education at State University of NewYork at Buffalo (1972-1979), Professor of Music and Carl E. Seashore Professor of Research in MusicEducation at Temple University (1979-1994), Distinguished Professor in Residence at the University ofSouth Carolina (1995-2000), Professor of Music at Michigan State University (2001-2003), and ResearchProfessor at the University of South Carolina (2004-2014).

He has been recognized in his field with numerous awards, including the University of IowaDistinguished Alumni Award (1992), The Temple University Great Teacher Award (1989), the OhioUniversity Distinguished Alumni Award (2004), the Music Educators National Conference (MENC)
