3. Allow the kids to build whatever they want, andconstantly check up on them with questions andencouragement on their masterpieces.

Remember: ask the questions in a curious, openmanner so they don‟t feel intimidated.

Remind the older kids to watch out for the youngerchildren at their tables (i.e. Don‟t let them use

scissors or other potentially dangerous objects).

Native American Craft: Dream catchers

Where to hold this activity: Dining room (afterdinner) or Couch room Materials needed: Embroidery hoops (from cabinetsin couch room); thread or yarn; beads (optional)

1. Explain the story behind dream catchers:“Dream catchers have long been a tradition forNative peoples in North America. Originally fromthe Ojibwe people, dream catchers are meant to

snare the bad dreams floating in the night air intheir webbing and allow the good dreams to fallthrough the center hole in the dream catcher

and into your sleeping head. When the sun risesin the morning, the bad dreams trapped in theweb disappear.” (kidzworld.com) 

2. Using the picture (next page) for reference, startmaking dream catchers: Wrap yarn around theembroidery hoop, leaving a loop out so thedream catcher can be hung up.

3.  Take a long piece of thread and tie it onto theedge of the embroidery hoop. Tie the thread ontothe hoop again about an inch away from the firstknot. Continue doing this until you are back tothe first knot.

4. At this point, instead of tying knots onto thehoop, start looping the thread onto the first lineformed between the first and second knots. Thenloop the thread onto the second line, formedbetween the second and third knots on thehoop. Continue this until you reach the center,then tie the thread off onto the nearest line.

5.  The dream catcher is now finished. If a kidwants to add beads, tie a few short pieces of yarn onto the bottom of the dream catcher. Add

Latin American Craft: God‟s eyes (Ojos de Dios) 

Where to hold this activity: Dining room (after

dinner) or Couch room Materials needed: Popsicle sticks; yarn; glue

1. Explain the story behind Ojo de Dios:“Ojos de Dios were discovered by early Spaniardwhen they encountered the Huichol (pronounced„wettchol‟) Indians in the Sierra MadreMountains of Mexico. The Huichol Indians madethese „God‟s eyes‟ to be placed on altars so thattheir gods would protect and watch over thosewho prayed at the altars. The Ojo de Dios is asymbol of the power of seeing andunderstanding unseen things.”(historicalfolktoys.com)

2. Using the picture (next page) for reference, startmaking Ojos de Dios: Glue two popsicle stickstogether in the form of a cross. Once the gluehas dried, knot a piece of yarn onto one of thefour “poles” formed, close to the center.

3. Bring the yarn over the pole to the right, then

wrap under it. Repeat the procedure with thenext pole on the right. When you have wrappeduntil near the end of the poles, knot the yarnonto one of the poles.

African American Craft: African masks

Where to hold this activity: Dining room (after

dinner) Materials needed: Paper plates; hole punch;scissors; paint; paintbrush; pipe cleaners; beads;popsicle stick; tape

1. Explain the history behind African masks:“One of the main characteristics of culture ofAfrican peoples is use of masks in rituals andceremonies. They represent spirits of animals orancestors, mythological heroes, moral values ora form of honoring of a person in a symbolicway… The maker of the masks had a high rankin the village because it was believed that he hadcontact with the spirit world.”(historyofmasks.net)

2. Start making the masks by punching holesaround edge of the top half of the plate. Then cutout a pair of eye holes.

3. Have the kids paint their masks in any colorsthey want. Attach pipe cleaners into the holes on

the plate, and slide beads onto the pipe cleaners.

4.  Tape a popsicle stick to the bottom of the plate.

Chinese Craft: Paper Loop Dragon

Where to hold this activity: Dining room (after

dinner) or Couch room Materials needed: Construction paper; scissors;tape; markers 

1. Explain the story behind dragons in Chineseculture: “Dragons are deeply rooted in Chineseculture. In fact, the Chinese often considerthemselves „descendants of the dragon.‟”(chinaculture.org) “The Dragon stands for newbeginnings and good luck.” (about.com) 

2. Start making the dragon by cutting out anapproximately 2 inch by 4 inch strip ofconstruction paper. Tape the long ends of thestrip together to form a loop. Draw a pair of eyes

and tape on a forked tongue made out ofconstruction paper.

3. Continue cutting out strips of paper. Loop thestrips through the one before it to create achain.

Dance Night

Do this when energy levels seem: HighDifficulty: Hard  Time needed: About 1 hour  Where to hold this activity: Lower gym or Dayshelter  (open spaces)Materials needed: “Dance Night Songs” CD ; CD player  

Younger children (up to 4 yrs.):  Show them how to do the dances for Hokey-

pokey, Head & shoulders, and the ChickenDance.

Older children (5 yrs. and up):

  Teach them the Cha-cha Slide, YMCA,

Macarena, Electric Slide, and Cupid Shuffle.  If you don‟t know these dances, go ahead and

choose the ones that you know or make up aroutine to the songs.

Play the CD (it is in the order of the songs listed) andrun through each dance a few times with the kids.

Afterwards, you can keep the CD playing and have adance party.

Dress-up Night

Part 1: Charades 

1. Bring out the dress-up bin and let each kidchoose the costume that he or she wants.

2. Once everyone has changed, start a game of

charades:  Pick someone to go first, and tell him or her

what he or she has to act like (ex. A robot,sprinkler, heart attack, etc.).

  Without making any sounds (no talking!) orwriting/drawing anything, he or she must actout the character, object, or motion.

  The rest of the kids are to guess what theactor or actress is imitating. Whoever guessesright gets to be the next actor/actress.

Music Night

Do this when energy levels seem: Moderate  Difficulty: Moderate  Time needed: Less than 1 hourWhere to hold this activity: Lower gym  Materials needed: Instruments  (tambourines, drums,xylophones/bells, recorders, etc.); “Music NightConcert Track” CD ; CD-player  

Younger children (up to 4 yrs.):  Bring out the drums and tambourines and show

them how to beat the instrument. If they seemready, demonstrate a simple rhythm or two.

Older children (5 yrs. and up):

  Let the older kids play with xylophone/bells and

recorders –  make sure they aren‟t sharingrecorders, especially if someone is sick!

  Allow them to free-play with the instruments,and then show them a few simple tunes (e.g.Mary Had a Little Lamb, Twinkle Twinkle LittleStar). More examples of tunes are on the nextpage.

Allow them to free-play for a few minutes. Onceeveryone is familiar with his or her instrument, youcan host a concert for the parents.

 To host a concert: Put the CD titled “Music NightConcert Track” into the CD-player, and let the kidsplay along to the songs.

Remember: You don‟t have to follow these rulesexactly. If a younger kid wants to play the bells orrecorder, go ahead and let him or her try it. If youwant to play different music than is on the concertCD, go ahead (as long as the songs are child-appropriate).

Part 1: Scavenger Hunt

1. Create three copies of a scavenger hunt ofordinary things found in nature that can befound in the courtyard or garden (e.g. flowerpetal, bark chip, pine needle, twig, etc.)

2. Divide up the kids in three groups. There shouldbe an equal number of younger and older kids ineach group.

3. Give each group a copy of the scavenger hunt,and take them outside to the courtyard.

Part 2: Fairy Houses

1. Find a short bush or tree that has many forkson its branches or places to balance smallobjects.

 2. Using the materials found from the scavenger

hunt and more from around the courtyard, ask

each kid what he or she thinks the object couldrepresent in a fairy house.

  Ex. A flower petal could be the fairy‟s blanket,a pebble could be a table, and a daisy could bea lamp.

You may have to start out with a few examples atfirst (such as imagining the petal as a blanket andthe pebble as a table) just so the kids have an idea ofwhat they are supposed to do.

Painting Night

Do this when energy levels seem: Low  

Difficulty: ModerateTime needed: Less than 1 hourWhere to hold this activity: Dining room (afterdinner)  or Lower gym  Materials needed: Paints (finger-paints and acrylic); paper plates ; paintbrushes ; cups of water ; paper ; paper towels  

Younger children (up to 4 yrs.):

  Sit the younger children together at a table andprovide each person with a few pieces of paperand a plate with different finger-paints on it.

  Allow them to paint whatever they want.Remember to give a lot of encouragement!

Older children (5 yrs. and up):

  Give each person a few sheets of paper and aplate with different colors of acrylic paints on it.

  Ask them to paint their day or anyobjects/scenes they would like.

Remember to ask open-ended questions such as“What are you painting?” “Why are you painting ____?” “Why are you using these colors here?”

Storybook Night

Difficulty: Easy  Time needed: About 1 hour  Where to hold this activity: Lower gym ; Dining room(after dinner) ; or the Day shelter  Materials needed: Storybooks (from closet in gym orbookshelves upstairs); paper ; stapler ;markers/colored pencils/pencils

1. Read one or two storybooks to the children. Tellthem that they will write their own storiestonight.

2. Make booklets out of 4 sheets of paper each: foldeach sheet in half and staple the halvestogether.

3. Create a simple storybook for the kids to followas a model. The main purpose of this is so thatthey don‟t feel overwhelmed by the process, so don‟t worry about creating an amazing storyline.

4. Provide each person with an empty booklet andput tubs of markers, colored pencils, and pencilsin the center of each table.

 5. Let them start writing and illustrating their

storybooks. Walk around and check in with each

1. Have everyone sit down at a table and give eachperson a few sheets of paper, a paintbrush, andset several watercolor sets in the center of eachtable.

2. Let the kids paint whatever they want. It doesn‟thave to be an object; it can also just be randomstrokes of paint.

3. Check in with each kid and ask how he or she isdoing. When the painting is finished and stillwet, come around and sprinkle a few grains ofsalt onto the painting. Salt “flowers” shouldform.

Weaving Night

1. Give each kid a cardboard loom and a fewlengths of yarn in colors of their choice.

2. Following the instructions on the next page,show everyone how to weave in and out of the

strings on the loom.

3. If someone is having trouble weaving throughthe strings on the loom, it may be helpful to tie apaperclip onto the weaving string and use it as aneedle.
