  • 1. Andrew Goodwins Musictheories Andrew Goodwins theories about music videos show how we can identify different genres of music and different genders in music videos Some of Andrew Goodwins theories relate to the music, the lyrics the visuals and treatment of genders within the music video. We can use some of Goodwins theories to help create our music videos and we can also challenge them to create something which contradicts the theories. The videos in this Presenation show how music videos prove Andrew Goodwins theories.

2. MOTIFS Motifs are used in music videos to enhance the lyrics or visuals, they can also be used to create a theme for a song. Cheryl Coles fight for this love shows clearly one example of motifs that enhance the lyrics. The song has key words like fight Love This is shown through the red strip which runs across each layer. This creates a theme for the music video. My group and I could use a motif to enhance our lyrics and visuals in our music video.Ushers Love in this club has a similar motifwith the flash of light across each layer, however the light does not enhance the lyrics. The light creates a mood for the music videoand also sets the location as the music videois set in the club. The light is used to triggertarget audience experience as the targetaudience for this artist/song are teens whowould regularly go to the club and experiencesimilar things. RD (ruff Diamondz) Do it like me has the same kind of motif with the light flashing across the screen. The light is blue which matches the meaning of the lyrics as they imply that the band are cool . 3. CAMERA ANGLES The camera angles are important in Music videos. They are used toestablish the location. To present the band or to single out importantelements of the video through close up. One of Goodwins theories is thatevery music video must have close ups. Here in Beyonces single ladies there are minimal cameraangle however the video includes Zooms and 360 cameratechniques. Although the video doesnt include many cameraangles the camera does zoom into a close up where we seethe artists hand across her face. This is appropriate as thesong is about putting a ring on a finger. Therefore the close upamplified the lyrics. The close up here is used to enhance the lyric. When theartists says Stop we get a close up of her closing her fistwhich implies that she is stopping or ending something. Thisshows Goodwins theory clearly of how close ups in musicvideos are needed to enhance the lyrics and possibly themusic as well. 4. MUSIC AND VISUALS Here in Lilly Allens smile the music completely contradicts the visuals. The music has an upbeat reggae melody which creates a happy tone however the visuals all show something sad/bad happening to either the artist or the male performing in the video. This also proves Goodwins theory that Music can contradict/ amplify or illustrate. 5. LYRICS AND VISUALSBend your kneesPut your hands up Bounce around in a circleCaught up in sorrowEmotions taking me over 6. VOYERISM AND SCOPOPHILIA These two videos show howwomen in music videos areseen as sexual symbols forthe music industry. We seehow scopophilia andvoyeurism is used to presentfemale artists. In one videointertextuality is even used topresent the female body. 7. OVERALL Overall I have seen how Goodwins theories are used in music videos and how they act as an aid to the video to enhance its meaning and to present the artists in a way that will appeal to their audiences. I have also seen that even different genres of music carry the same characteristics proving that Goodwins theories apply to all genres across the music industry.
