Maria Sharapova used the U.S.Open as an opportunity to

promote her fledgling confection company, Sugarpova, to the media. Iasked her if she was planning on making any sugar-free candies for thosewho either may be diabetic or merelytrying to avoid possible dental problems. “With a name likeSugarpova, I think you have youranswer,” she replied icily, but seemedto like my question about whether thebig boys in the candy industry, Mars,Nestle, and Hershey, had approachedher about acquiring Sugarpova: “I’vegotten offers, but this is my baby andI’m not ready to sell.”

Two fairly new tennis players gotpublicity boosts in unexpected ways.Montreal native Eugenie Bouchard wason the cover of the Sunday New YorkTimes Magazine the day before theOpen, while Miami’s Monica Puig waschosen by American Express to be partof its latest tennis campaign; her likeness was on the boardwalk thatconnects the 7 Train Station at WilletsPoint to Flushing Meadow Park.

American Express, Asics, TimeWarner Cable, and Ralph Lauren wereamong the many corporations who saw the U.S.Open as an excellent way to market themselves toupscale patrons. The tennis media’s favorite companies, however, were Grey Goose andHeineken, since they sponsored the nightly happy hour.

The World Cup ofBasketball gets afraction of the attention that itsolder soccer cousingets, but it is building momen-tum. Joint Chiefs ofStaff General MartinDempsey, whosetime has understandablybeen monopolizedplanning militaryattacks against ISISforces in Syria andIraq, took a break tocome to MadisonSquare Garden lastmonth before TeamUSA played theDominicanRepublic. Hethanked the playersfor practicing atWest Point and bolstering themorale of thecadets, and compared the NBA

stars to Bob Hope, who brought joy to millions of soldiers with his USO-sponsored shows on military bases.

Former St. John’s Red Storm forward OrlandoSanchez was a part of the Dominican Republic basketball team that played Team USA. To

nobody’s surprise, the Americans won by 43 points.Sanchez more or less admitted that he and histeammates knew that they had no shot playingagainst a team of NBA all-stars. “I received mydegree in sports management and I would like tobecome a player agent, “ Sanchez added.

Former New York Mets general manager OmarMinaya was one of the many baseball luminaries atthe premiere of the animated film Henry & Me atThe Ziegfeld Theater two weeks ago. Minaya isnow the senior vice president of the San DiegoPadres, and understandably enjoys life in that wonderful Southern California city. Henry & Me isabout a boy, Jack, who is fighting pediatric cancer. His spirits are low until he has a dream whileunder anesthesia that he is meeting a number ofpast and current prominent New York Yankeesplayers, who inspire him to battle his illness. The“Henry” here is Henry Louis Gehrig (voiced byRichard Gere, who seems to be doing a KevinCostner impression), who serves as Jack’s guidethrough Yankees history. Unsung Heroes: As weenter the new season ofleague bowling – and, like every year, await the begin-ning of the PBA season and collegiate matches – let's takea look at 10 individuals who are helping to advance thesport in various ways. You might not know all of thepeople on this list, but if you're a serious bowler, youprobably should.

Chris Schlemmer:Ubiquitous on PBAtelecasts, Schlemmer thesedays is the marketingmanager for Roto Grip; inthe past, he's served as apro tour consultant for sister company Storm aswell. He's helped numerous pros makeproper bowling ball sec-tions during importantmatches, but anyone who's talk to “Schlem” knows he'sserious about every facet of the sport: “Helping bowlersof all skill levels is what I do,” is his published motto. Hewalks it like he talks it; Schlemmer is a notable presenceat ball expos and clinics across the country. He's alsobecoming quite astute at the microphone; catch hisvideos for Roto Grip on YouTube.

John LaSpina: The owner of the Maple FamilyCenters (these days comprised of Rockville Centre Lanes,

Countryside Lanes in Florida,Coram Country Lanes in Coram,Farmingdale Lanes, Maple Lanesin Brooklyn, and JIB Lanes inFlushing), LaSpina and his son,Joe, are masters at taking moribund centers and makingthem community centers thateven non-bowlers enjoy. Of particular note is the amazingchange at JIB Lanes, which usedto be dank, almost-fogotten bowling alley. Today, it's a clean,

modern center; when people return there after not seeingif for years, they marvel at the difference. The LaSpinasnot only care about their business, but about the overallhealth of the sport as well.

Irwin Bergman:The former LIUSBCpresident not onlyserved that positionwell for years, but actsas league secretary forsome of the largestleagues at HerrillLanes in New HydePark. Here's wishingthis classy gentleman all the bestafter some recenthealth difficulties.

Anthony Martinez: The president of the LIUSBC forthe 2014/2015 season, he'll oversee the activities of allsanctioned leagues in this region.

Johnny Petraglia: Everyone knows the popular lefty asa PBA Hall of Famer – but in recent years, his new scoring system for the game could serve as a model forproposed changes in the way bowling records are

tabulated. Usedat top women'stournaments afew year back, the PetragliaSystem doesn’tcount total pinfall, butinstead countsthe number ofballs thrown toclear the deckevery frame. Astrike equals a“1”; most spareswould end upwith a “2”; splitscould leave a “3”

or higher. Under this system, the lowest score wins –same game, totally different scoring system. (Do webelieve that bowling needs an “easier to understand”scoring system? No – but if the game's leaders ever makea change, this is the type of innovative yet easy-to-understand system we'd go with.)

Vito Genova: His LIYBT tournaments are helping tomake serious bowlers out of young Long Island athletes, which is exactly what the sport needs these days.

Steve Sanders & Bob Olsen: Their well-organizedLong Island Generations Bowling Tournaments (LIGBT)are outstanding events for amateurs, who roll on pro-style patterns and usually have a great time meeting thechallenge.

Philip Chance: In a sport that typically is beingdescribed by some as “fading,” Chance's brainchild, TheUnderground Bowling Association, mixes some greatbowling with an urban, almost pro wrestling-like sensibility. The result? Full houses and loads of fun attheir tournaments.

Frank Wilkinson: Many area bowlers know him fromRab's Country Lanes in Staten Island – but these days,he's also the national USBC's vice president as well.

and a longtime confidante of the late GeorgeSteinbrenner, Ray Negron. The story is inspirational, and you don’t have to be a Yankeesfan to enjoy this film (although it does help). Themovie will be released on DVD on September 30.There were many delays in the production of thefilm – one was caused by Major League Baseball, which reportedly insisted that the filmmakersremove Alex Rodriguez, who voiced himself.

Sports is as much a part of the entertainmentindustry as movies, theater, and the music biz. In

the last few weeks, The Hollywood Reporter featuredWashington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III on itscover, while TV Guide used NASCAR driver DaleEarnhardt Jr.

CBS Sports engineer Ken Aagard, broadcastingnetwork executives David Hill and Steve Bornstein, and the late ABC sportscaster Chris Schenkel willbe among the inductees at the 2014 SportsBroadcasting Hall of Fame Awards ceremonies inmid-December in New York City.

For years, it seemed almost impossible not tocome across Pat O’Brien on television. He was inmany ways as ubiquitous as Ryan Seacrest is today.O’Brien hosted countless national pre-game showsfor nearly all of the major sports on almost everynetwork. He also hosted the evening syndicatedshows “Entertainment Tonight,” “AccessHollywood,” and “The Insider.” Like Seacrest,O’Brien came across as bland, and never met acelebrity that he didn’t fawn over. His cool, debonair on-screen image masked the fact that hewas reportedly both an alcoholic and philanderer.Eventually, life in the Los Angeles fast lane eventually cost him his television career, and nearlyhis life as well. O’Brien has just published his autobiography, I’ll Be Right Back After This: MyMemoir (St. Martin’s Press), and he holds nothingback; in it, he lashes out at the vanity and vapidityof many of his female co-hosts, such as GiselleFernandez, Nancy O’Dell, Shaun Robinson, andMary Hart. His story truly is a cautionary tale.

One of the fun aspects of attending PGA Tourevents such as the recently concluded Barclays isbeing able to pick up tips on improving your game.A company called Pill Golf displayed a modifiedgolf ball that has its right and left edges of the

circumference shaved off so that it looks like a tire. By practicing putting and chipping with it, you can analyze quickly why your ball is breaking right or left. For more information, log onto thepillgolf.com; check out the free tutorial videos, where you can obtain some valuable advice.

Sin City:A Dame To Kill ForStarring Jessica Alba, Josh Brolin, MickeyRourke, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Eva Green,Rosario Dawson, Bruce Willis, JamieChung, Powers Boothe, Ray LiottaDirected by Frank Miller and Robert RodriguezDimension Films

We will admit it without fear of being labeledsexist, but from her recent interviews, we don'tthink she'll mind, not even a little: After seeingJessica Alba in everything from bikinis to far lesson the covers of seemingly everything fromEntertainment Weekly to Aluminum Siding Monthly, yeah – we were excited to see this second install-ment of the Sin City series, again based on thegraphic novels of the same name. Alba has neverlooked hotter or more buff, and if she was in anactioner that made her the focal point? Sure; shecan't act her way out of a convenience store line, but we'll be darned if we didn't want to see whatall the hype was about – even while fully knowingthat the first Sin City film wasn't all that much towrite home about in the first place.

Unfortunately, no letter to dear ol' mom after see-ing this one, either. Sin City: A Dame To Kill Forfollows the same formula as the initial 2005 movie, complete with clichéd dialouge, colors on black-and-white backgrounds, animations where the linebetween CGI and Mickey Rourke's naturally odd

looks blend together seamlessly, andon it goes. Amazingly, despite theglossy-yet-dour comic book feel, thisfilm ranks as one of the most violentmovies any mallplex dweller is likelyto see – but then again, what's RobertRodriguez (who directed with FrankMiller, the originator of the graphicnovel series) gonna do, focus on tritenecessities such as plot and characterdevelopment? Rodriguez is from theAndy Sidaris school of directing –bullets, bombs, and babes, indeed –and to him, the closer any of hisworks come to a gruesome EC horrorones from the 1950s, the better. However, not all comics books aregood; this film is what Metal Menwas to X Men.

The message of both Sin City filmsbelies the hopelessness and degrada-tion of the comics series, where theoverall theme is to take whatever youcan from life before some SOB ribsyour heart out with a boat hook.Seems right; in an era where blackdeath metal fans celebrate things likebloody miscarriages in their half-assed tunes, anything goes; anythingis game to be laughed at by some. But after an 90 minutes of stylizedbrutality, the only thing we can ascertain is that Sin City is inhabitedby utter losers – and anyone who'denjoy this can probably be describedthat way as well. – Cody Bell

HerculesStarring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson,John Hurt, Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell,Joseph Fiennes, Peter MullanDirected by Brett RatnerParamount

Frankly, we still think the greatest Hercules infilm history was featured at the dinner table inEddie Murphy's The Nutty Professor (“My littleHercules! Hercules! Hercules!”). But then again, wehad never acquired a taste for this wheezing, barrell-chested, chestnut of a character – actuallythe subject of a “major motion picture” for the second time during 2014 (the first was the amazingJanuary stink bomb The Legend Of Hercules, aLionsgate film that received a near-record threepercent “fresh” at Rotten Tomaotes while garneringless than $20 million at the domestic box office).

This time out, there's a bigger budget, far betteractors, and an actual reason to exist: This version ofHercules is actually based on Radical Comics'Hercules by Steve Moore, which is more logicalsource material in that the published comic was abona fide hit. And wonder of wonders: This isn'tall BANG! BOOM! POW! as the always welcomeformer WWE wrestler Johnson makes for the first-ever amiable, actually funny-at-times Hercules.

Shoot ... now we're getting visions of The ThreeStooges Meet Hercules, Columbia's 1962 attempt tomerge two hot acts at the time – Hercules in theaters, the Stooges on syndicated TV – into a filmthat could be a hit at the box office. Unfortunately,

the film suffered from the sprocket-clogging presence of “Curly” Joe DeRita, the weakest “third Stooge” of all time – yet, this underwhelm-ing effort was the comedy trio's most financiallyrewarding box office film of all time. Even with alame DeRita and a wooden Hercules in SamsonBurke, audiences couldn't stay away.

With the erstwhile “Rock” in thelead role, this can be said for thisnew version, which landed at number two in its opening weekend, losing out only to the ScarJo sci-fimeller, Lucy: While hack actiondirector Brett Ratner guides this filmalong with his usual hammy fist,Johnson saves the day while somehow managing to be his usualcharming self despite the garishfright wig and various body armorsand animal heads he's forced tosport. Another treat is watching IanMcShane (HBO's “Deadwood”) chewup the scenery as the seerAmphiaraus, who also gets off somekiller lines. Thank screen writersRyan Condal and EvanSpiliotopoulos for giving his film thesame light touch that Moore always used to.

Yes, it's the cast that saves this one, as a horde of heroes comes tothe aid of The King of Thrace (Hurt), and let the whacked-outaction and quips begin. It's all safe harmless fun – but if you really want some Greek heroism,

stop by Greek Family Kitchen in Hollis Hills beforeor after you see this; get some tzatziki to go withyour sword and sorcery. And whatever you do,don't miss barely clad supermodel Irina Shayk's bigscreen debut. She can't act her way out of a paperbag ... but who's asking her to?– Cody Bell

Johnson’s New Wax: ProvogueRecords and rock/jazz guitarist EricJohnson recently released EuropeLive, his new in-performancealbum.

Guitar Player Magazine citedJohnson as “one of the mostrespected guitarists on the planet,”and the reasons why are many.Such primary ones as the lyricalbeauty of his playing and compositions, his broad palette oftones, his instrumental agility, breadth and command, and themesmerizing spell he summons upin concert.

The in-concert collection’s 14tracks draw from throughoutJohnson’s career and include twonew compositions: The mesmeric“Intro” that opens the set, and therocker “Evinrude Fever” (thatalludes to his love for water skiingand boating). His Grammy-winninginstrumental “Cliffs Of Dover” andGrammy-nominated “Zap” are performed aswell; other high-lights include hissoaring, blues-tingedsalute to hishometown,“Austin,” and theairy and glistening “40Mile Town.”

Johnson’s life-long love of jazzand more recentforays into playing itemerges on hisnine-and-a-halfminute interpretation ofJohn Coltrane’s“Mr. P.C.,” onwhich bassistChris Mareshand drummerWayne Salzmannalso step out withpower. The songselection rangesfrom an acousticguitar renditionof “A Song ForLife” which heinitially cut onhis debut studioalbum to theferociously funky “Fatdaddy” fromhis most recent release, Up Close.Johnson celebrates his side-projectAlien Love Child with the hard-driving rock workout “Zenland,”and the 11-and-a-half minute multi-modal suite “Last House On The Block.” Originally released in1996, the fan favorite “Manhattan”shines, while a gloriously cinematicrearrangement of “When the SunMeets the Sky,” titled “Sun Reprise”closes the set.

Europe Live was recorded invenues across Johnson’s tour of thecontinent, with the majority of the

album capturing his appearance atAmsterdam’s Melkweg along withselections from two dates inGermany at Die Kantine in Kölnand Bochum Zeche and the Parisshow at New Morning. Eachappearance featured a unique setlist, offering Johnson the opportunity to cull this track listingfrom a wealth of repertoire captured.

Although he may be best knownas the masterful studio craftsmanbehind his acclaimed million-plusselling breakout 1990 album Ah ViaMusicom and its Top 10 hit “CliffsOf Dover,” Johnson first made hismusical bones and sparked a potentbuzz in live performance from thelate 1960s to the mid-1980s longbefore he ever issued an album andwas heard on radio. As guitar legend Johnny Winter recalls of see-ing Johnson perform back then,“When I first heard Eric, he wasonly 16, and I remember wishing

that I could have played like that atthat age.”

Over his seven studio albums,Johnson has delivered three Top 10hits (“Cliffs Of Dover,”“Trademark” and “Righteous”) andtwo Top 40 singles (“Pavilion” and“High Landrons”). N.A.R.A.S. hascelebrated his career with sixGrammy nominations. He contin-ues to refine and expand his musi-cal brilliance in his own electric andacoustic tours (playing both guitarand piano), and his recent live col-laborations with Mike Stern andslide master Sonny Landreth.

"I've been coming to Borgata for fouryears now, and it has become one ofmy favorites," said Seinfeld, adding,“I'm happy to come back as often asthey will have me."

Quickie Review – Oddball Comedy &Curiosity Festival: In a nutshell: Showgreat, everything else ain’t, as FunnyOr Die’s recent comedy tour was both aboom and a bust at Nikon at JonesBeach Theater on August 22. Certainly,it was a dream lineup of standups onthe main stage in Louis C.K., ChrisHardwick, Sarah Silverman, HannibalBurress, Bill Burr, Dave Attell, JeffreyRoss, and newcomer Jermaine Fowler, but the mess before the main showstarted was inexcusable. Those purchasing tickets in advance believedthe show began at 5 pm – that’s whatwas told to them in an email and onlineweeks earlier – so thousands of fansshowed up as early as 3:30 pm.However, only the front part of theamphitheater opened, causing seemingly mile-long lines for entrance, and literally thousands of people packing the beer garden and concessionareas for an hour and a half. Why? Forsome unfathomable reason, admittanceto the actual seating area for the mainshow wasn’t allowed until 6:30 pm,forcing patrons to eat, drink, and listento the non-stop overamplified meanderings of the astoundinglyunfunny Brody Stevens and a handfulof other comics nobody paid to see.

All of the stars on the main stagewhen the show actually began at 7 pmwere outstanding, but there were somany frazzled patrons by the time thelights went up, we’re suprised we evenheard a chuckle. We’re also surprisedthat Elsie The Cow wasn’t also on thebill, since the audience was certainly treated like cattle.

Comedian Lewis Black – easily one of theworld’s most popular standups thanks tohis hit cable specials and “Back In Black”segments on Comedy Central's “The DailyShow With Jon Stewart” – will return to TheNYCB Theater in Westbury for not one but

two evenings on September 26 and 27. Tickets arenow on sale, but you had best make plans early;they're available online at ticketmaster.com, chargeby phone at (800)745-3000, or at the Westbury boxoffice located on Brush Hollow Road in Westbury.

Black's star has been on the ascent for morethan a decade; his super-charged way of venting hisrighteous indignation about everything from politics to the sheer stupidity of many aspects ofmodern life has endeared him to millions. Blackactually began as a playwright; after trying standup(he was no stranger to his region, preforming atvenues such as Jimmy's Comedy Alley in Queens),things started firing on all cylinders following his

1998 “Comedy Central Presents” appearance; by2003, his HBO special “Black On Broadway”cemented him as one of the great performers of themodern era. Yet, if you ask Black about it, you canalmost hear the shrug.

“If you had come up to me at Jimmy's ComedyAlley back then and said this is what my future wasgoing to be like, I would have thought you wereinsane,” said Black. “I am still stunned by the goodfortune that my career has bestowed on me. I havecome way further than I ever imagined possible. Ihave been very lucky.”

Luck might have something to do with it, but alot of hard touring might have more than a littleinfluence on his good fortunes as well. He's beensomewhat of a regular at NYCB Theatre atWestbury over the past several years, and he countsthe famed theater in the round as one of his favoriteplaces to perform.

“I am not blowing smoke, but both JohnBowman, my opener and I, love that venue,” saidBlack. “I love the intimacy of the space. It may havea circular stage but it helps create a space in whichthere doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the house.Everyone can actually see the expressions on ourfaces and the acoustics are terrific. And by havingto adjust the performance to a circle rather a prosce-nium, it takes me out of our comfort zone and helpsus in creating new and different wrinkles in my act.The audiences there are also incredible. They are asreceptive and fun loving and as bitter as anywhere Igo in the country. I love performing for them. I amthrilled I get to perform two nights there eachyear.”

Black's comedy special, “Old Yeller,” was firstbroacast as a pay-per-view special instead of on payor free cable. Others such as Andrew “Dice” Clayhad used such a means in the past; Black noted thatit all was for a specific reason.

“We couldn't get a deal put together quicklyenough with HBO or Comedy Central,” Blackexplained. “I was hoping the PPV route could getmy special seen as quickly as possible. Wheneveryou shoot a special for HBO or Comedy Central orShowtime, the editing time and the process meansthe special comes on the air about seven or eightmonths later, and in my case some of my materialloses its immediacy and might seem dated. We didn't reach as many folks as I had hoped. And I'llbe looking at other ways to get my shows seenwhen I think they should be seen, immediatelywithout having to wait.”

New or taped, Black's specials are now indelible

in the minds of comedyfans across the nation –particuarly “Black OnBroadway,” the 2003HBO special that now isa comedy landmark.

“It was incredibly special to me, because Ihad felt that as far as myspecials went I hadentered the big leagues,”said Black. “It was adream to play Broadwayand to have my parentsout there. I had been aplaywright for a longtime and was hoping Iwould have a play go upthere. So it meant a lot tome. It's a show I am veryproud of.”

Of course, Black's rantson the polticially charged“The Daily Show WithJon Stewart” are can'tmiss TV for comedy fans.Yet, the more Black ravesabout politics in his act,the worse things seem toget in Washington. Cananything be done beforewe're all eating dog foodin our seventies?

“I believe we are betterthan our leadership hasbeen for quite sometime,” said Black. “I thinkour better nature willprevail. I think we live ina time period in which agroup of idiots are trying

to fight to keep us in a time period, almost the 1950s, thathas long since passed. The natural changes that haveoccured over my lifetime hasfreaked them out. They talkabout freedom, but it scaresthem to death to see it in action. They hold back our intelligencein so many ways. Their fear ofscience is staggering. But likethe dinosaurs that they seem tobe like, they will pass from theearth. And we shall move on.And we will be better for it.We won't end up eating dogfood, but you may have to fightto eat something other thanvegetables.”

Black, like virtually all comedy fans, is still dealingwith the shock of losing RobinWilliams, a contemporary thathe was involved with professionally in the past.

“I knew Robin,” said Black. “We weren't close, buthe meant the world to me.Working and spending timewith him was as joyous as itwas inspirational. His confidence in my humor made me more confident in mywork. His invitation to join himon two USO Christmas Tourswas life changing. I was a hugefan of his, as a comic, as anactor and as a person. His generosity was astonishing. Iwill miss him terribly.”

Techno Beat Well, needless to say, this weekend was one hell of a weekend. After 3 days of classes, I went back home for my yearly attendance at the Electric Zoo festival; one that I am all too familiar with. Having gone the last 2 years, it is interesting to see how the festival changes each year. I’d have to say, I think overall the festival definitely has seen its high point this year. I’m not saying it’s going to go down, but if they can keep the quality of the festival the same as this year (or even make it better), the other festivals will have some serious competition. I just want to get this out of the way for people who are wondering or are being critical of the festival: safety and security was the best I’ve seen it. EZoo added “Zookeepers”, which are people walking around to help you out with anything you need. Free water was plenty and camelbaks were eventually allowed in. Unfortunately, the third day of EZoo was cancelled mid-day due to severe thunderstorms (trust me, it was like a monsoon). It was out of the hands of EZoo as a national weather flood warning was issued for the area and NYPD got involved and had the whole place evacuated. It sucks because EZoo really reacted to what happened last year and stepped up their safety game tremendously, but had some bad luck with the weather. With that out of the way, it’s time to get into the meat and bones of the festival. Stage design and lighting were off the charts. Great job. I commend anyone involved in the design, lighting, or visual crews and these were some of the best have seen yet. I am also referring more heavily to the main stage. The setup made it look like the NYC skyline behind the DJ. And went the sun went down, everything got crazy; from the intense visuals, the cloud-like lasers, and the abundance of very fast moving, very colorful assortment of lights on the stage. They was such a vast variety of lights that it was able to coincide with whatever feeling the music was evoking. Truly, well done. In terms of the actual lineup, Electric Zoo killed it. For a festival that is only 6 years old, EZoo is bringing in such a large quantity of top name artists that it is incredible. I, myself, am not a “main stage artist” fanatic and tend to spend my time in the smaller stages amongst the trap and dubstep DJs. With that

being said, I did make my way around to the main stages and even to the all-vinyl stage throughout the weekend

and was thoroughly impressed. As a DJ myself, I always notice the quality of the mixing of the artist and that was on point for sure. The mixing of all the songs was impressive. If I had

to pick a few acts that I really liked, I would definitely put MAKJ, A Trak, Zomboy, Keys N Krates, Pegboard

Nerds, Zedd, and Milo and Otis. The reason I picked these was because of their song choice and ability to keep the crowd in a high-energy state the whole performance. A Trak, having

won the DMC World Championships at age 15, is an incredible vinyl DJ and knows how to scratch like a master,

working that into his set and getting the crowd going. I was especially drawn to Keys N Krates due to the fact that they play hese trap and hip-hop songs live and mash them up on the spot. With a drummer, a keyboard player, and a vinyl DJ, Keys N Krates are able to really give the crowd a one of a kind performance. Which leads me to my interview with them… These guys are easily one of my favorite, if not my favorite, interview to date. They are all just so laid back and down to earth guys that I had a great time speaking with them. They started out just jamming with regular drums, keyboard, and a DJ and then it just progressed from there, adding

more keyboards, more hardware and eventually evolved to form Keys N Krates. With the release of their new EP and the single off of it, “Are We Faded”, they are definitely stepping up to the plate and trying to make themselves known to the EDM world. “We try and treat it like it’s a concert and like we’re a band…. We try to have a different feel to it, make it more musical, have more vibey parts and some stuff you wouldn’t

expect, like broken up tempos and stuff.” It’s

always cool to see an act to take their musical background and combine it into their performances and you can clearly see the positive effects of doing that when watching the group live. To get to that level, however, they spend a lot of time looking for samples that are the perfect match for the feel they are trying to achieve. “There’s some shit that I hear that we worked out and I just can’t believe what it used to be like… We take stuff and pitch it up so it sounds like a girl’s voice but it came from the roughest, soulful male’s voice in the original sample.” It’s things like that, which separate the good from the great in my opinion. For their upcoming EP they went for a feel in which “you don’t have to be at a rave to listen to the songs. You can listen to them at home.” They’re the type of act I would go and see again and again. With that being said, I had an amazing time and can’t wait for next year. Don’t hesitate to email me with any questions, comments, or concerns at [email protected]. Keep raging, my friends!

Weekends seem to be "legends nights"at this famous theater in the round, as latesummer brought a round of weekly classic/post-classic radio staples in rapidsuccession. On this particular Sundaynight, the always quirky, ever-heartfeltLyle Lovett broughthis impressive 14-piece orchestra backto NYCB for a concert thatenthralled the nearly full house.

Lovett's band isworth the price ofadmission all byitself. It’s a groupthat performs Texasswing and slow ballads with equalaplomb, and is aunit that's as tightand tasty as any onthe road today.Particularly notableare its veterans;drummer RussKunkel toured for years with James Taylorand recorded with virtually every famousrocker on the Warner Brothers label duringthe 1970s and 1980s; and backup (and, ontwo occassions, lead) vocalist FrancineReed – she of the infamous AnvilMortgage infomercial from years back –remains her soulful, charismatic self at the age of 67.

However, Lovett, the leader of this

extraordinary band, is always its focalpoint, and he remains one of pop music'smost acquired tastes. His pleasing onstagedemanor is ever humorous and gentlemanly, and his warm voice, on pointhere, hasn't changed much during the past

three decades. He lefthis fans happy by performing most ofhis best-known tunes(“If I Had A Pony,”“That's Right (You'reNot From Texas),”“Cowboy Man") incompact arrangements thatdidn't vary too muchfrom the originalrecordings. Lovett'smain flaw remainshis songwriting, which somtimes canbe ever-so-precious(particulary "She'sNo Lady" and theinfuriatingly self-indulgent faux blues

"Here I Am"); those who actually believe alightweight like Lovett could ever be arepresentative of the "Texas sound" probably believe Woody Allen is the epitome of New York City masculinity.

Despite the occasional cloying song,Lovett and his Large Band still deliver oneheck of a concert – even if on occassionone of his tunes requires intellectual hipwaders to plod through. – Bob Smith

This is certainly the era of the doubleconcert bill; in recent years, we've seensuch reasonable and/or odd pairings onlocal stages such as James Taylor/CaroleKing; Burton Cummings/Don McClean, and this summer, Chicago/REOSpeedwagon and Motley Crue/AliceCooper. At one point during this disparate, long,expensive-as-hell show, the innovative, multi-genreguitarist Carlos Santanajoked about what he andpop/rocker could possiblyhave in common: "I likeEtta James; he likes EttaJames. I like Sam Cooke;he likes Sam Cooke ... weboth play black music forwhite people."

Well, sort of. Openingthe set was Santana andhis usual huge band, but ittook at least four songs forthe massive outfit to jell(we suspected a long nightwhen they couldn't evenlock in during the easy-to-play chestnut"Tequila"). Yet, things finally fell togethernicely as the band launched into its canonof hits ("Evil Ways," set closer "Smooth"),and Santana, despite his 67 years, still is afiery and passionate fretslinger, playingwith as much soul and groove as ever.

However, as slick and soulless as afloor wax commercial was Stewart. To befair, the staging for this sequence of the

show was breathtaking – incredible lighting and effects, a half-female band all sporting mini-dresses, choreographeddance moves from everyone involved –but after about two songs it started toresemble an oily Las Vegas casino tributeband. Stewart actually left the stage on

four occasions for spiffyoutfit changes, such arock & roll thing to do.Yes, all the hits wereplayed, but his canononly reveals how longago Stewart decided tosell out his rock cred tobe just another pop star;his forays into "The GreatAmerican Songbook"only cemented his rep for pure schmaltz. Hisappearance here wasutterly homogenized andtotally walked through, yet the hits-happy, graying baby boomercrowd barked like trainedseals every time they

recognized a song. Of course, the teemingthrong of old ladies that comprised muchof the crowd thought Stewart was stillcute – which apparently is all that reallymatters for someone who once was anactual rock artist but now ranks as a withering self-parody alongside such blatant sell-outs as Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley, and Kiss. – Bob Smith

Rich Robinson is a founding member of the classic rock revivalistgroup The Black Crowes; he recently released his third soloalbum, The Ceaseless Light. OnAugust 17, Robinson and his excellent road-tested band stoppedat this popular venue to showcasethe influential guitar style that wassuch an integral part of his formerband.

The show opened with the NewYork City-based roots rockers HollisBrown, who have been creatingquite a buzz on the national circuit;tours with The Zombies and REM-spinoff The Baseball Projectare two of their recent roadaccomplishments. The band was infine form as it played new materialmixed in with songs from their firstrecord, Ride On The Train. Theirsound is reminiscent of the heart-land rock of Tom Petty, but mixedwith a dose of blue-eyed soul and asmattering of great guitar work toboot. Prophet Omega followedthings up with an eclectic set thatwas heavy on R&B drum samples, which were bolstered by HammondB3 organ and lilting pedal steel

licks. Prophet Omega is fronted byJoe Magistro, who is the drummerin Robinson's band. Their sound is aunique blend of influences that setthe tone for Robinson and his group

to take the stage. Robinson came charging straight

out of the gate with “I Know You,”a song that showcased his signatureguitar sound reminiscent of the

alternate tunings utilized by KeithRichards. The six-piece band was infine form throughout the set, whichcherry-picked the best material fromRobinson's three solo albums.Toward the end of the set, Robinsondonned a Fender Stratocaster andled the band through some improvisational numbers that sawthe band stretch out quite a bit.Robinson's vocals are reminiscent ofLowell George of Little Feat, and hisstrong original songs kept thecrowd’s attention up until the lastnote.

The soulful groove laid down byRobinson's band filled the roomwith an expansive sound that wastruly impressive, a testament to theyears of touring the band has underits belt.

89 North Music Venue hasproven itself as one of the best spotsto see live music in Long Island;those who made it out to see RichRobinson, Prophet Omega, andHollis Brown can attest to the validity of that statement.

OhMiBod ... & Maybe Yours: OhMiBod(ohmibod.com), a manufacturer of sexualhealth products, recentlyoffered coast-to-coastblueMotion events to introduce the revolutionaryremote-controlled vibratorand WiFi enabled OhMiBodRemote smartphone app, blueMotion. The areablueMotion event was held on July 24 at Babelandin New York City.

This official blueMotionlaunch introduced what thecompany termed as its highly anticipated Wi-Fi appfeature and the designinception, from ideation tocreation, showing the earlystage blueprints of the finished products. Attendees had a chance to playwith blueMotion, where each station was equippedwith iPads preinstalled with the OhMiBod app and Skype/gchat to showcase the long-distanceconnectivity of blueMotion.

According to the manufacturer of these uniqueproducts, blueMotion and the OhMiBod Remoteapp help couples stay connected even when they’re physically apart. The WiFi-enabled appallows users to remotely control their partner’svibrator with a simple stroke on a smartphone.Couples can now enjoy real-time control usingblueMotion from any location.

OhMiBod's founders, Suki and Brian, originallycreated the OhMiBod Remote App because theykept hearing stories about couples spending moreand more time cuddling up with their smartphonesand less time being intimate with each other. Thehusband and wife team decided it was time to create a technology that empowers people to share an enhanced level of intimacy, even over long distances.

“We all know that technology can drive peopleapart,” said Suki Dunham, Founder of OhMiBod.“We’ve created something that uses your digitaldevices to bring you closer together – no matterhow far apart you are physically.”

The app is beautifullydesigned and easy to navigate.Users will be able to create anunlimited number of vibrationpatterns using five exciting functionalities including: voice-to-vibration, touch control, tapand save, accelerometer, andpreset patterns. As an addedbonus, the iconic blue heart willblink and throb to the vibrationpatterns that your partner isenjoying.

A recently concluded crowd-funded campaign was launchedon indiegogo.com to raise fundsfor blueMotion. With the addedfunding, creators of the remote-control vibrator are able to addfunctionality that allows users tosnap and send pictures whileusing the in-app sexting feature. To see what helped make this

fantasy a reality, go toindiegogo.com/projects/ohmibod-remote-control-vibrator-pleasure-your-partner-from-anywhere-any-time.

Rocking The Region Right

CBS: The “Tiffany Network” has hadthe most viewers during the last decade, but it has taken shots from hipster criticsfor appealing to an older audience. That’snot a problem, but the lack of risk takingmight be. CBS CEO Les Moonves loveshis “CSI” and “NCIS” franchises, and islaunching a new one from each this fall.“CSI Cyber” stars Patricia Arquette andJames Van Der Beek as FBI agents whospecialize in high tech crime. Scott Bakulahas long played gruff characters; he’sback as another on “NCIS: New Orleans ”... Johnny Lee Miller’s success as SherlockHolmes on “Elementary” has created anemployment opportunity for fellowBritish actor Iaon Gruffudd, who stars asa New York City medical examiner in“Forever.” The twist is that Gruffudd’scharacter is immortal ... It’s not a new TVseason unless Dylan McDermott is starring in yet another show. This time,it’s “Stalker,” where he plays a formerNYC detective who relocates to the LAPDto track down ... guess what ... A moreintriguing cop show is “Battle Creek,” byVince Gilligan of “Breaking Bad,” whichstars Josh Duhamel and Dean Winters ...A mid-season addition will see NeilSimon’s “The Odd Couple” get a reboot;Thomas Lennon (Felix) and MatthewPerry (Oscar) star.

NBC: “Allegiance”stars Scott Cohen as thepatriarch of whatseems to be a normalAmerican family butare actually Russianspies. Apparently noone told NBC thatcable’s FX has a similarshow called “TheAmericans.” “State OfAffairs” stars KatherineHeigl as a CIA attache. My prediction for theseis that the dice willcome snake eyes, justas they did for NBC entertainment chair-man Bob Greenblatt’s other recent proj-ects: “Smash” and “The Michael J. FoxShow” ... “Aquarius,” set in the late1960s, stars David Duchovny as an LAdetective who will eventually cross pathswith Charles Manson. “The Mysteries OfLaura” has Debra Messing, playing atough-as-nails single mom NYPD detective ... On the comedy front, KateWalsh stars as a wacky guardian of thelaw in “Bad Judge.” The fact that the television version of “Bad Teacher”flopped on CBS last spring apparentlydid not deter Greenblatt. The always-welcome Craig Robinson stars as a juniorhigh music teacher in “Mr. Robinson.”

ABC: These have not been the best oftimes for ABC, which has finished fourthin the ratings the last two years. But now

it seems as if the network is trying tobring diversity to prime time: ComedianAnthony Anderson, who has neverstarred in a hit show in spite of numerouschances, gets a chance to fail yet again inthe questionably titled “Black-ish,” inwhich he stars as the head of an upscaleAfrican-American family. NewcomerCristela Alonzo stars in “Cristela”; sheportrays a law school grad who finds that the only employment open to her is an unpaid internship at alaw firm ... Baseballs star Nick Swisher’swife, JoAnna Garcia, stars in “TheAstronauts Wives Club” set in the 1960s, while “Manhattan Love Story” is yet another “Friends”-inspired showabout twentysomethings in the big city.

Fox: Rainn Wilson portrays a brilliantyet humorously crude Portland detectivein the hour-long dramedy, “Backstrom” ...Terence Howard stars as the head of a hiphop music label on “Empire.” Taraji P.Henson, last seen on CBS’s top-notchdrama, “Person Of Interest,” co-stars ...Fox executives are hoping that “The RedBand Society,” about chronically ill teensin a hospital, will be their next “Glee” ...On the comedy front, “Seinfeld” fansshould check out “Mulaney” starring former “SNL” writer John Mulaney, who

portrays a slightly fictionalized version of himself; the supporing cast includesMartin Short, “SNL’s” Nesim Pedrad, and Elliot Gould. Another former“Saturday Night Live” player, Will Forte, stars in “Last Man On Earth.”

CW: Last year, this flailing networkfinally had a minor hit with a DC Comics hero, “The Arrow.” This year, the CW is doubling down on DC Comics superheros with “The Flash.” The CW has had a touch of success with vampire-themedshows, so now it will expand into theworld of the undead with “iZombie,” featuring Rose McIver portraying a medical student who works in a coroner’s office so that she can maintainher zombie lifestyle undercover.– Lloyd Carroll

Charlie’s Way In Westbury: The Charlie Daniels Band headlines astacked evening of southern andcountry rock legends coming to TheNYCB Theatre in Westbury onSaturday, Septmember 13 at 7 pm;The New Riders Of The Purple Sageand Molly Hatchet also will performfull sets in an evening dubbed“Westbury Rocks.” Tickets are now on sale; log on to thetheatreatwestbury.com,Ticketmaster,com, or livenation.com.To learn more, call (800) 745-3000.

Daniels and his legendary bandare currently on tour in support oftheir latest album, Off The Grid:Doin' It Dylan. Obviously, one mightwonder why such a firey performerand his exceptional big band wouldwant to take on the more traditional

standards of folk pioneer Bob Dylan.“There's a TV show called 'Hell On

Wheels,' and we were asked to dosome music for it,” said the ever-personable Daniels. “Because of thetime period of the show, we werelimited to acoustic instruments likethey had in the 1800s. We had neverdone acoustic music before; the bandsounded so different and so great. So we decided to do a whole albumlike that – and who better to go tothan the endless well of Bob Dylanmaterial. Plus, I was a huge BobDylan fan and I wanted to do a tribute to him anyway. It was just a very opportune time todo this.”

Rather than an album ofrote covers, Daniels and hisband put their own spin onclassic songs such as “HardRain's A Gonna Fall,” “GottaServe Somebody,” and“Tangled Up In Blue,” andsomehow manage to makethese folk/rock standardssound fresh and new.

“Our whole objective wasto, obviously, do Dylan songs, but make them like our songs, to do them in a way that's never been done before,” said Daniels, who worked as a session musician on three of Dylan's classic albums.

Of course, much of Daniels' canon – “The Devil Went Down ToGeorgia,” “Still In Saigon,”“InAmerica,” and so many others –

are nearly on par with Dylan, but fea-turing Daniels' own signature south-ern sound. Through the years,Daniels has been unwaveringly patriotic, performing overseas (threetimes in Iraq) and writing andrecording songs in tribute to ourtroops; his “The Last Fallen Hero”was a post 9/11 song that madeheadlines and touched hearts. His stance on backing the U.S. andour military is one that Danielsspeaks of without reservation.

“I have a very deep feeling for themilitary,” said Daniels. “There are notwo ways about it: America is thegreatest nation that ever existed. Wedon't realize what a great nation it is;even the other nations in the westernworld, they don't have everythingwe've got. They don't have all the

freedoms that wehave, things thatwe take for granted far toooften. We have the best of allworlds here.”

Daniels speak-ings glowingly ofhis performancesin Iraq to entertainU.S. troops.

“They're the bestwe've got,” saidDaniels, who laternoted, “Me beingaround them, theykept coming up to

me and saying, 'Thanks for beinghere.' I said, 'No thank you – I'mgoing home in a few days, but you'llstill be here.' … They deserve awhole lot of credit for what they doevery single day.”

Guess Again: Reissue specialistIconoclassic Records recently released a digitially remastered version of Power In The Music, thefinal album by The Guess Who originally issued in 1975 by RCARecords. The album, pretty muchcompletely ignored by radio and thepress during its original run, features the final formation of the

Canadian band, which includedvocalist Burton Cummings and guitarist Domenic Troiano. In thenew liner notes for the disc,Cummings seems to eschew much of the album today, but as a wholeit's a revelation, proving the lateTroiano to be a stellar guitarist capable of both accessible pop and progressive, experimental rock.

The Guess Who

But Dad, It’s Smokey: Motownmania continues as a new album bySmokey Robinson makes its way ontothe Top 10 at Amazon, iTunes, andjust about everywhere else. Smokey& Friends has been issued on theiconic jazz label Verve Records, andfollows the tradition of superstar

duets asRobinsonrevisits hislegendaryclassics withequally legendarypartners:Elton Johnkicks off“Tracks OfMy Tears”;“You ReallyGot A HoldOn Me”

keeps its rock & roll roots thanks toSteven Tyler; James Taylor jumps inon “Ain’t That Peculiar.” Othersinclude Mary J. Blige, John Legend,Sheryl Crow, CeeLo Green, andBritish star Gary Barlow. The tracksare more mellow and jazzy than theoriginals – but Smokey is well intohis seventies and happy to reinventthe way these tunes are presented. The album does not break any newground, but in this year of Motown, itsure sounds good.

More Makeup: Ken Sharp is at itagain: His Nothin’ To Lose: TheMaking of Kiss hardcoverbestseller is still doing well, but he has now droppedKooks, Queen Bitches, AndAndy Warhol: The Making ofDavid Bowie’s Hunky Dory, which was the first Bowiealbum to make noise inAmerica. It delivered a singlewhich crept its way into thelower part of Casey Kasem’sAmerican Top 40 severaltimes in “Changes” (or, ifyou prefer, “Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes”!). The book features quotes from many ofthe principals involved, frommusicians, producers, critics, and fellow travelers, who allgive a laser-precise light tothe moment and the albumthat changed everything forBowie (the follow-up LP,Ziggy Stardust, sealed thedeal). For Bowie devotees, this new book is a must;you’ll find it online, and it’swell worth the search.

Outdoors Soars: I actuallymade it out to Patchogue tothe bandshell off the water as

summer was winding down, andthere was longstanding Long Islandmusic legend Anthony Richards playing keyboards for Milagro, aSantana tribute band, as the entirevillage joined me in having a blast.Hearing a band play outdoors wasonce a way of life for me in the 1960sand 70s, and after this outing, Iintend to do it more often. Memoriesof the “Woodstock generation” wereevoked, and I actually spotted quite afew hippies in the crowd (yes, I wasa one once ... until glitter camealong). If you haven’t gone out to hear a band play live in a while, tearyourself away from the computer anddo it; there’s nothing like it, and youwon’t regret it.

VMA Mucho: The MTV VideoMusic Awards brought the usual suspects out to parade their latest creations. Among my favorites:Taylor Swift, with her “Shake It Off”instant #1 hit, channeling CherryVanilla via 80s Madonna; Sam Smith, this generation’s version of BoyGeorge (minus the makeup, doing“Stay With Me”; he has a brilliantvoice, and knows exactly how topresent himself); 5 Seconds Of Summer, the latest teen boy band in punk rock drag; and my two faves of the summer, ArianaGrande and Iggy Azalea, keeping theteen beat alive, thank heavens.

If you didn’t like the VMAs, you’re too old – get out of the way!
