GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH
Message from Monsignor René Mathieu (1) Bishop Robert Deeley is visiting us this Sunday, May 10 to adminis-ter sacraments of initiation to children, youth and adults. All are
welcome to participate in this special Mass that will begin at 1:30 pm in
St. Joseph Church. (2) Thursday, May 14 is a holy day of obligation, the
Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. The schedule of Masses for
Wednesday evening and Thursday are listed elsewhere in this bulletin.
(3) We have begun the 2015 Appeal and will continue through the month of May. The
weekend of May 16/17 is Commitment Sunday when we will do the usual in-pew
commitment process. Please keep in mind that the Appeal funds the following mini-
stries that directly support our parish or ministries in the parish: Office of Lifelong
Faith Formation; Catholic Schools Office, teacher pension & school rebates; Campus
Ministry; Office of Communications; Harvest Magazine; St. Andre Home; St. Louis Child Development Center. (4) Three of our parishioners were recognized at the dioce-
san youth convention held April 17-19 in Rockport. Emily Belanger received the St.
Timothy Award conferred on a high school student who lives as a disciple of Christ,
setting a positive example for other youth; witnesses to their faith by exhibiting Catho-
lic morals and integrity; demonstrates Gospel values through service to others; exhibits
Christian leadership in parish, school, Scouting, and/or community settings. Hillary
Cusack and Betty Belanger received the Companions on the Journey Award conferred
on adults who demonstrate: excellence in youth ministry; commitment to ongoing edu-
cation and formation; longevity in ministry; commitment to young people; outstanding
leadership at the local and/or diocesan level. Only four adults in Maine received this
award this year, two of them from Good Shepherd Parish. Congratulations! (5) Don’t forget that EWTN’s Marcus Grodi will speak next Sunday, May 17, 6:30 pm at St.
Joseph Church. (6) Bishop Deeley has authorized a special collection at all of Maine’s
Catholic churches on the weekend of June 13-14 to provide aid and recovery support
to the people impacted by the destructive earthquake that shook Nepal on April
25. “The Diocese of Portland has a long history of meeting humanitarian challenges
and providing hope to those facing circumstances of great need,” said Bishop Deeley.
“In this moment of devastation and suffering for the people of Nepal, I ask that we
come together and offer our prayers, compassion, and generosity to assist and support
the thousands of individuals and families affected by this tragedy.” The proceeds of the
special collection will support Catholic Relief Services (CRS) as they address relief
and recovery efforts. CRS is already on the ground in Kathmandu, the capital city and one of the most affected areas, distributing food and providing shelter. Materials for
shelter, water purification, and hygiene kits will be needed for months to come. Be-
cause we already have a second collection scheduled for that weekend, your contribu-
tion to help the people of Nepal will be accepted as you leave Mass that weekend, at the exits of the church. (7) Thank You of the Week: To parishioners who organized
the thought provoking and well attended program for ministers last Sunday. Thank you!
JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 5 - Msgr. Tonne: A young priest was called to a
hospital where an old man lay dying. He leaned over his bed, and said clearly and
loudly, “I am a priest. Is there anything I can do for you?”
With an effort he turned and groaned, “Stop sending the envelopes!”

Cemetery Update: Thank you to all who have already
made donations to the paving project for the "priest's
road" at St. Mary Cemetery! We are only a few hun-
dred dollars away from reaching our goal! If you have
not made a donation yet but would like to, there is still time. Simply
put your donation in an envelope and mark it St. Mary Cemetery
Paving Project, and put it in the collection basket, or mail it to the
Cemetery office at 271 Main St., Saco ME 04072. The paving will be
done this spring and even though the winter has been tough, we hope
to get the work done before Memorial Day! Thank you again for your
support! ~ Paula Moses, for the GSP Cemeteries Committee.

Youth Ministry Schedule May 10 – NO SESSION (Mother’s Day)

May 24 – NO SESSION (Memorial Day Weekend)
May 31 – Graduation Mass FMI concerning the following events/programs, contact youth minister,
Josh Houde, 282-4812 x117 or [email protected].
Each morning, Saint James School begins its day out on the school yard. Parents join us in the school yard. The bell rings at 8:15 am and students line up with their classes. Pre-K through eighth grade is out in the school yard, ready to start their day. The principal begins each morning with a greeting and lets the students know something about the day. Sometimes there is a special presentation or a performance by the students. Some days, the Student Council members will give a green minute, which encourages recycling. Students are recognized for special accomplishments. Each class is respon-sible to lead the school community in prayers and a pledge. It starts with eighth grade in September and ends with kindergar-ten in June. Students say a prayer and then the entire school
community says the Our Father or the Hail Mary together, then the school pledges the flag. This begins our school day. Kisses are blown to parents, and stu-dents walk into the school yard to start the day. This is such a wonderful way for parents to be with us at the start of our day, to
recognize accomplishments in front of the entire student body, to begin each day in prayer and to make our school feel like a small community. Saint James is truly a special place!
