Good Shepherd Lutheran Church ECHO the love of Christ
We are a Christian community united in God’s call
to serve others by sharing the love of Christ.
A congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
AUGUST 2019
How to SEE the world. (?) How would you like to see the world? Would you like to see it as artists see it? Would it be full of color and vibrant life to the point that it seems unreal? Or will most of the colors turn blue and dark and scary. When an artist SEES the world, she does not just see color and shapes and forms, but she feels the colors and how they interact with their own environment. She might see how our beings, each person, intrude and inflict the scene with our selves and selfish desires to control and/or manipulate the scene. Artists tend to see the world in different ways. Engineers, however, have still another way to see the world. Engineers have this tendency to want to fix things so that the world will operate a little better. They are problem solvers. They tend to think how a process works and how it can be streamlined or made to work more efficiently. Engineers always want to make things better. This is how they look at the world, as problems to be solved. So if Artists and Engineers see the world in different ways, how is a Christian supposed to see the world? Martin Luther’s line of thinking is to find Christ in everything we do. So, looking for Christ is how we should initially see the world. Look for the good and be Christ to all and in all you do. Martin tells us that a Christian shoemaker doesn’t need to put little crosses on the shoes. A Shoemaker should make good shoes thereby displaying the care and love that is inherent in all Christians.
Luke 10:33 But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity.
The Samaritan SAW him, beaten and half dead. The Samaritan did not SEE a Jew or Gentile or outsider or colonialist or black or white or brown or any of the other labels that we use to differentiate others. The Samaritan saw HIM as he was: a person in need. Let us always look to the needs of others so that we might SEE them and join in community with them. Blessings of peace in Christ’s name!
The Rev. Patrick J. Van De Motter

The Big Churchy Word this month is:
“Maranatha”
In biblical translations, maranatha is a word representing an Aramaic phrase occurring in 1 Corinthians 16:22 and usually left untranslated. Its exact interpretation is variously understood by scholars and translators. Current scholarship favors the interpretation “Come, O Lord!” The most widely advocated alternative is “Our Lord has come.” It has also often erroneously been regarded as forming part of a formula of imprecation in anathema maranatha.

July 2019
Dear Business Owner,
This year Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is excited about the launch of a
new service camp entitled, “Today God Is First (T.G.I.F).” This camp will be
held August 4 – 9 at Camp Luther located in North Kingsville, Ohio. Teens
and adults from the local community will gather to complete service projects
within our community. Projects could range from yard work to painting.
We are reaching out to local businesses to request a donation of $250. This
donation will help cover the cost of supplies for the various projects within our
community. This could be a gift card that could be used to purchase the
material that may be required to complete these various projects. We will give
back any monies that are not used to the donating business.
Thank you in advance for your support.
Sincerely,
Jasmine Steighner

Please continue to save your box tops for Conneaut Schools. Watch for them on grocery items you purchase. You’ll find a collection box in the gathering space.
The turkey box is back! You can find it in the gathering space and drop in your spare change. Money collected will be used for Thanksgiving and Christmas families.
Thank you!
A box has been placed in the gathering space to collect those small soaps, bottles of shampoo & conditioner, and hand lotion that you will get from hotel rooms on your summer vacation. Please save these items as they are a welcome addition to the Human Resource Center.
GSLC hosts BINGO at the Ashtabula County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center the second Wednesday of every month from 1:30-2:30 p.m. This wonderful ministry, currently funded in memory of Sue Dewey, has a long history with GSLC. Our volunteers call numbers, assist residents with their cards, and share in the fellowship and fun. Sound like this volunteer opportunity is for you? We can always use more help. Volunteers are treated to a beautiful luncheon! For more information or to volunteer, please contact Shirley Harco at 594-3873 or just show up! The facility is located at 5740 Dibble Road in Kingsville.
An invitation is extended to anyone interested in playing in the Praise Band at the 8:30 worship service. Please contact Jim Fuller or a pastor.

News & Updates
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL
Thanks for VBS! Our Vacation Bible School was July 15-19. With a globetrotting travel theme, we stamped our passports each day with a Bible verse as we asked, “Who is my neighbor?” The story of the Good Samaritan was our focus. New this year was a simulation station, where kids used hands-on activities like building a shelter out of cardboard boxes or performing surgery on a banana in order to learn more about helping our neighbors. For a local service project, we packed personal health and hygiene bags to be shared locally with Samaritan House. Globally, we collected enough offering to purchase six baby chicks for families around the world, through ELCA World Hunger. VBS was a time of learning and togetherness. Thanks to all who participated in this ministry! —Pastor Paul Bailie

Committee News
Social Ministry July is almost gone and Social Ministry is getting prepared for our biggest event of the year--the perch dinner! We’re hoping it isn’t too hot for the D-Day celebration. This is an anniversary year and there will be more people in town for that week-end. I The fellowship hall should be painted before the dinner if everything goes as planned. And maybe the new drapes will be up. Gods Blessings,
The Social Ministry Team
Looking for the perfect venue for your special event? Consider renting Fellowship Hall! Call the Church Office, (440) 599-8908, and speak with Stephanie to find out more.
