Sixth Sunday of Easter May 17, 2020

READINGS May 17, 2020

Acts 8: 5-8, 14-17 Ps 66: 1-3, 4-5, 6-7, 16, 20 1 Pt 3: 15-18 Jn 14: 15-21

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER “...sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make a defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you.” 1 Peter 3: 15 Actions speak louder than words. Let your stewardship be your reply. Stew-ardship involves a change of heart, em-bodied not just in a single action, nor even a series of actions, but in a way of living. PUBLIC MASSES Good Shepherd will reopen for public Mass on Wednes-day, May 20, 2020 with morning Mass at 8 AM. All parishioners/attendees should wear a mask or face covering when attending Mass. Please enter the church through the open door and use hand sanitizer. Please be seated immedi-ately. The pews have been marked to allow for social distancing. Please stay in your place for communion. When the Mass ends please exit through the open door. MASS OF THE AIR 11 AM and 6:30 PM on the Faith Channel (Spectrum channel 19). 10:30 AM on WHAS-TV (channel 11). This Mass is also streamed live on the Faith Channel at www.faithtvlive.com MARRIAGE MOMENTS Deep ques-tions: Who is God? What is love? “Whoever loves me [Jesus] will be loved by my Father [God] and I will love them.” (John 14:21) Yes, God is love but we humans know love through physical, emotional, and intellectual commitment. How do each of you show your love for God and each other? PARENTING POINTERS Surpr ise someone with a compliment today. It can be someone in the family, a neigh-bor, or a stranger. Even if just one per-son in the family does it, maybe it’ll catch on. It’s the effort and thought that count. EMAIL UPDATE It is important that the church has your most up-to-date in-formation on file. We have very few email addresses and the ones that we do have are not current. Please phone the office at 502-749-9780 to make sure we have your current contact information.

MAY 17, 2020 JESUS DOES NOT LEAVE US ALONE.

Dear parishioners of Good Shepherd, The peace and the love of the risen Lord be with you all. I hope you are safe and you had a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend, though it was not the same! On that day, at Good Shepherd, we had a wonderful celebra-tion, but simple. It was attended by five people including the main cele-brant, and watched online by 326 viewers who offered 37 comments. I wish to thank Debbie and Gina Eberenz for the good music, Rick Thomas for live streaming the mass and Dave Jewell for reading and serving in the mass. Special thanks go to the parishioners and friends of Good Shepherd for sharing your precious time and following the mass on our Facebook page. This encourages us especially during this time of COVID-19. “I will not leave you orphaned.” At this time of isolation due to COVID-19, we all need to hear these words. They speak directly to some of our greatest fears and challenges, abandonment and isolation, loneliness. These words remind us that we do not stand alone, Jesus does not ever leave us alone. What I mean is that we are accompanied by the Holy Spirit. Just take an example, try to imagine how God has been so gra-cious to us since the lockdown due to COVID-19 that I have not heard of any cases of Corona virus or of any parishioner testing positive in our parish. This means that we are not alone during this pandemic period. God is with us and he will continue to be with us. He promised to be with us always until the end the time (Matthew 28:20). Today, in the gospel, Jesus tells us that he will not leave us as orphans. An orphan is a child deprived by death of one or both parents. It is sad and very pain-ful! Jesus has great concern for his disciples. He will not leave them “orphans” with no one to care for them. So he assures his fearful disci-ples that I am going away but “I will ask the Father, and He will give you a helper, counsellor, witness, judge Advocate to be with you al-ways”, and He said, “I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you.” He promises us the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the helper whom Je-sus will send to be alongside the disciples as an encourager, a counsel-lor, and advocate, a witness, and as a judge. The Holy Spirit will remain forever with the disciples. He will abide with them. And this is the Spir-it of truth. But this Spirit is given only to those who receive the Son, love the Son, and keep the Son’s commandments. Keeping the commandments is our access to Jesus’ promise that we will not be left orphaned. Keeping the commandments does not make Jesus present to us. It makes us present to the already ongoing reality of Je-sus’ presence. The commandments do not earn us Jesus’ love they re-veal our love for Him, a love that originates in His abiding love and presence within us. Jesus says “I will not leave you as orphans” over and over, day after day, regardless of what is happening in our lives right now. We have not been abandoned. Do not abandon yourselves or others or your church or your parish Good Shepherd. Have a wonderful weekend. Fr. Deo Ssamba.
