Good Neighbor Day Social Media Techniques
Food Drive
I. Use the list of the food drive donation box locations to connect as many locations with a relevant Twitter handle as possible.
II. Create a list of these relevant Twitter handles and follow them all. III. Tweet at these organizations/places urging them to encourage
students/staff in their group or location to bring donations to the food drive donation box.
IV. Tweet at them reminding them where the donation boxes closest to them are.
V. Urge them to retweet your tweets to their followers.
VI. If they do retweet or mention you in a tweet be sure to favorite and retweet it or mention them in a separate tweet.
Volunteering
I. Tweet out the volunteer registration link. II. Mention certain student groups or community groups in tweets about the
event encouraging them to register and attend. III. Tweet out the event graphic or pictures from previous years.
IV. Tweet reminders about the event with links like frequently asked
questions.
Hashtags
I. Create a main hashtag to use for all tweets related to the event i.e. #GoodNeighborDay or #GoodNeighborDay2014
II. Encourage people to tweet using the hashtag during the event so that you can monitor their tweets.
III. Include the hashtag in all your tweets about the event. IV. Post signs throughout the event with the hashtag on them encouraging
people to vote.
Signs
I. Create signs to hang up during the event to encourage people to tweet @UMD_OCE or use the hashtag.
II. Create different questions on the signs encouraging people to answer the questions in their tweets.
III. Examples: a. What does being a #GoodNeighbor mean to you? Tweet your
answer with #GoodNeighborDay and we’ll retweet you. b. Tweet us @UMD_OCE and tell us your favorite part of Good
Neighbor Day! c. Share your pictures with us by tagging @UMD_OCE or
#GoodNeighborDay d. Tweet us @UMD_OCE with what you learned at the College Park
Sustainability Summit! e. Remember to tweet us photos from your work sites with
#GoodNeighborDay!
During the event
I. Live-‐tweet the event with quotes and pictures. II. Retweet posts from attendees throughout the day.
III. Encourage people to post their photos and stories.
