August 13, 2017 Volume 14, Number 33 Good morning, Northside Family. Its hard to believe the summer break has zoomed by us and were already at the eve of another school year. Tomorrow morning, all of our elementary and secondary school students, teachers and administrators will begin the 2017-18 school year. This morning during our worship, we will share a back-to-school blessing and special prayer for all of these. Be praying this week, and throughout this entire school year, for not only the academic and extracur- ricular activities of our children but also for Christ to shine through them on their campuses. To celebrate the end of summer break and the return to school, our Youth Group will have a special time this evening beginning at 4:00 p.m. at the home of Steve Smiths parents (16328 I-30, Benton, 72019). Kudos to the Smith family for hosting this special time for our teens and for Conner, whos hit the ground running in his new role as our Youth Minister, in coordinating tonights gathering. And dont forget our college students and professors, too. They will be returning to their campuses during the next two weeks. Congratulations to Casey Cochran & Nicole Davenport who were married on Friday in a private ceremo- ny. The Cochrans will make their new home at 12100 Fieldstone Lane, #F-31, Bryant, 72022 (both of their phone numbers will remain the same as those in your current directories). Were fortunate that Casey and Nicole are a part of our Northside Family and wish them all the best of Gods blessings as they begin life together. The 15 th annual Ralph Bunche Back-to-School Backpack giveaway is in the books. Northside has been blessed to be the non-profit overseeing partner of this vital service to families in the Benton School District. I want to offer a very special thank-you to Donna Bowers, Jenny Carlisle, Sue Edwards, Keith & Andrea Gaines, Billy McLain, Rob Nossaman, John & Carol Shelton, Carson Sloan, and Richard Wallace who volunteered their time last Saturday. Then, on Thursday evening at the follow-up in our Outreach Building, Jim Acree, Donna Bowers, Sue Edwards, Billy McLain, Conner Smith and Judy Whittington volunteered and served alongside some of our teens: Tori Gardner, Ashton Gaskin, Jesse Gober, Rachel Mayes and Oakley Rockwell. Thank you to these wonderful servants for helping make a real difference for families and children in our community. This coming Tuesday evening brings Jase Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame to Benton. Jase will speak at the Benton Event Center at 7:00 p.m. Dinner, courtesy of Riverside, will be served at 6:00 p.m. You can still pur- chase a ticket today from Chad Slaughter in the foyer following Bible class or worship. Tickets will also be sold at the door on Tuesday evening. A special thank-you to those whove signed up to help with desserts. There are still some spots left for you to chip in and assist with desserts. The planning team is still asking for banana pudding, chocolate cake, sugar cookies, and oatmeal raisin cookies. Im especially excited about the opportunity we will have to engage and connect with those who attend on Tuesday evening to hear Jase speak. The Robertson family is highly respected and regarded for their strong faith and unashamed stand for the way of Jesus. Join me in praying that God will use this event to open hearts and doors of opportunity for us to share the Gospel of Jesus with those who come to hear Jase speak. Be sure to see the note on page three the available teaching opportunities in our Childrens Ministry for the fall quarter. To adequately staff Northsides Sunday and Wednesday Childrens Bible classes requires 52 volunteers per quarter (208 per year). You are always so good to fill these roles and I hope you will consider teaching our chil- dren this fall. I Love You all, Jim

Billy’s Thoughts

Northside is very blessed to have many devout and faithful Christians who have lived long lives. As part of my ministry, I am privileged to visit with those who are either still in their own home, or have moved to in-dependent/assisted living, or are in nursing care facilities, or are in long-term stays in a hospital or rehabilitation center. One of the consistent comments I hear is the loneliness that our seniors feel. We who are younger naturally have frequent interaction with lots of people. Whether with close family, church friends, colleagues, or even non-personal contact with cashiers and wait-staff, we take for granted hu-man interaction. When a person becomes less mobile, or homebound, the normal interaction with others may almost cease. If you are looking for a ministry that is easy to do and will tremendously bless another person, visit a senior where they live. Martin & Pat Feeny have taken on this personal ministry. Martin reminded the Wednesday morning class of the great reward in brightening the day of a “shut-in” by a visit. He has a list of all our seniors in this situation and will gladly make a copy for you Most of us are hesitant to visit someone we don’t know well. My experience in visiting with our senior citizens is that a visit from any one of us would be a blessing. May I challenge you to consider this as an acces-sible ministry that requires no unique skill except a smile and a listening ear! James 1:27 speaks of “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows…” While in James’ day he might have been thinking especially of food and protection, who can deny the great need also for human contact and warm interaction. FYI: JOY Group for any of us 55+ will be this Thursday at 11:30 a.m. This is a potluck, so please bring not only something good to eat, but a playful spirit! Also, LIFE Group sign-ups for the fall semester begins next Sunday, with LIFE Groups resuming Sun-day, September 10. Please tell me, text me, or email me if your home could be a meeting place for a group.

Conner’s Contemplations

As this Sunday passes we start a new phase of the year. For many adults, it is just like any other Sunday. However, for many of the teens, and their parents, it marks a very dreaded day. The last day of Sum-mer Vacation! Oh how scary it is! It marks the end of a great vacation period, no homework, sleeping in late, going to bed whenever, and for some the end of “stress free relaxation.” Teens: Many of the Teenagers have already told me “Do not mention the S word!!” Well Nate & Alex Fergu-son, I’m sorry to say this but SCHOOL HAS ARRIVED. It is not the end of the world guys! I know the feel-ing all too well of not desiring to return to school though. As most of you know it was not long ago that I gradu-ated college, and even high school. I know the feeling of dread having to get up early to catch a bus. I know the feeling of dread when I walked into a new classroom and didn’t have a single friend in that class. I also know the feeling of joy when I got to see my buddies from class. I know the feeling of joy when I passed a hard test that I studied hard to ace. Teens, try not to be too scared of returning to school! That’s my advice for the next week. Parents: A quick note! - Pool Party at 16328 I-30 Tonight for Teen Class. It is from 4– to 6 pm. That is Steve Smith’s parents’ house. The big white house off of the service road heading towards Hot Springs. As most of you have figured out by now, school is about to start! We had a great summer though! Last weekend we went on a hiking trip to Pinnacle Mountain. We all made it up alive and well! We got to see the fantastic view from the top, the amazing breeze to cool us off after a long hike. It was amazing, I got to actually interact with the youth from the minister stand point— it was a different experience but it was superb! I enjoyed it greatly, and I hope the teens enjoyed it as much as I did. This upcoming school year we are going to have several events hap-pening: from short day trips, to lunches, to full weekend trips; it will be busy. I hope that the teens will see these trips and activities as more of a break from school that lets them grow closer together rather than a chore they are expected to attend! I will try to make them as fun as possible with good ties to their spiritual lives. Events: Parent - Youth Minister Sit-down August 27 6:15 p.m. Unplugged Weekend (Cell phone Free Weekend) TBD Fall Retreat (Cost TBD) September 29 – October 1
