A Brighter future for Birklands Primary School When Mr Copestake was appointed as Head of School at Birklands Primary shortly after Easter 2015, his initial aim was to re-organise and refurbish the internal areas and improve the safety and outdoor facilities for the children. Internal improvements were made with new colour schemes and paintwork, the reorganisation of utilised space to create new classrooms and communal areas opened up. This has made the school seem brighter and feel more spacious. The next stage was to install a new fencing system which included monitored gates with limited access to improve the safety of the children and the look of the school. With these completed, it was time to move on to the external play areas. The Main play area was the first to be planned and the aim was to improve the play environment and provide better play facilities. Mr Copestake and the school staff decided that the children should be involved in the planning and have the chance to give their input into what was needed. So school council children shared playground idea catalogues with their peers who were asked to design their own play area in the form of mood boards to illustrate their ideas. These were all considered with tally charts for budgeting which helped them to choose right equipment within budget. The playground project was funded partially through Sports Premium and Torch Academy Gateway Trust whose ethos is ‘children first’. Once the plans were finalised, three companies were selected and invited to submit quotes for the project the winning quote was submitted by Sovereign Design Play Systems Ltd who are the largest provider of school ground developments in the UK. Just two terms later and the play area was completed to the delight of staff and pupils alike. When a selection of children who had been involved in the design were asked how they felt about their new play area this is what they replied: “The old playground didn’t have much equipment but the new one is more entertaining”. Amber Guy - 11yrs, Yr6 “It’s better than it was before because there are more things to do than in our old playground”. Emily Sisson - 10yrs, Yr6 “My favourite part of the playground is the Trim Trail because me and my friends like to play Ninja Warriors”. Dylan Zhuta - 9ys, Yr4 “I didn’t like the other playground because it was dull, the new one is colourful with more things to do”. Hope Snuggs - 9yrs, Yr4 “I just love everything but my favourite is the coloured tarmac because it’s safer when you trip over”. Catelin Farrel - 8yrs, Yr3 Next on the list was the redesign of the Foundation Area. Unfortunately, after major refurbishment of the school interior, the installation of the security fencing and monitored gates and the completion of the Main Play Area, there was no funding left for any improvements here. However, Mr Copestake believes that it is important that children have both indoor and outdoor access to aid their development and learning. So with this in mind, the Foundation Stage staff set to work to design a cost effective solution to help provide the facilities necessary. The plan was to move fencing to open up the area and develop part of the outbuildings into a large, covered sand pit. This would provide a more usable space and enable separate areas to be created to give children new experiences and the chance to develop new skills through play. Fencing was to be transformed by painting each section in different colours to formulate themed sections which would offer water, music and numbers play etc. They also made plans to included a teepee made from canes planted with runner beans to give life to a living den and use old tyres to develop ’small worlds’ such as fairy, animal, and dinosaur worlds. The plans were shared with parents, via letters, inviting them to get involved with the development and this returned a good response with offers of practical help and contributions towards materials including gravel, tyres etc. And so, with all hands on deck, staff and parent volunteers set to work demolishing, rebuilding, and painting and after several weeks of hard work the brand new Foundation Area was completed to the plan and within budget. However, before the new play area could be opened or any of the equipment used by the children, the whole area had to be checked by Sport Safe who provide an inspection report indicating what they have inspected and any unsafe or dangerous equipment as well as recommendations to be made. Thankfully, all went well and the new facilities were all up to scratch. With all other projects completed the school interior feels clean, bright and more spacious and the exterior looks colourful and fun. All of this work was facilitated by collaborative work from pupils, parents and all the staff, even including the caretaker, it’s been a real team effort. I’m sure you will agree that everyone involved in making the initial dreams of their new Head of School a reality deserve a massive pat on the back. General Tasks and garden maintenanceThe most important thing this month is to enjoy your garden; heady scents, glorious colours, an abundance of fruits and vegetables and hopefully more sunshine. What could be more enjoyable and satisfying than surveying the results of your hard work throughout the year?

WateringRemember to water and feed your plants regularly, especially those in hanging baskets, pots or containers as well as climbers and roses growing against a sunny wall. Many a plant will not recover from a drought, so water regularly and do not resort to feast and famine.Water hydrangeas with hydrangea colourant for true blue hydrangeas next year.If possible, set up an automatic watering system for your vegetable plot, borders and even containers. They are worth their weight in gold and can work on a sensor system that detects how dry the soil is. Once you have one you will wonder why you did not install one years ago. Going on holiday will no longer involve wondering if your precious plants will survive a dry spell or paying someone else to hold a hose!If it stays warm and dry, water saving strategies include using bathwater and washing up water, provided they are neither too dirty or oily. Keep your pond topped up, free of pond weed and clean - green algae can be toxic to pets.

WeedingBoring but vital. Keep on top of weeds in borders, the vegetable garden and all your pots and containers. Little and often will reduce what will become a Herculean task if left to spiral out of control.Weeds not only look messy but use valuable moisture in the ground. The best and easiest way to weed is to use a Dutch hoe which will cut the weeds just below the surface. Weeding on a sunny day will ensure weeds left on the surface dry out and die in the warmth.

BirdsBirds need fresh water for bathing and drinking, especially during hot and dry spells, so keep supplies plentiful and regularly changed. Throw out mouldy food on bird tables and remember that birds cannot digest milk - it can kill them.

Trees, shrubs and climbersCarry on cutting back perennials and deadhead all dying and spent flowers on annuals, roses and shrubs; not only will your garden look immeasurably tidier, but the plant will be prevented from putting energy into the seed and may be encouraged to reflower. When deadheading roses, cut the stem down with sharp secateurs; just breaking off old flowerheads will leave the rose vulnerable to infection. It’s too late to spray roses for blackspot now - once established spraying will not help. Pick off infected leaves and burn; do not put them on a compost heap where the spores will spread the disease.Trim back lavender and rosemary after flowering without cutting too far into the old wood and summer prune wisteria by shortening wispy sideshoots to about 20cm. Soak the soil with a high potash fertiliser if your wisteria’s flowering performance was a bit feeble.Save seeds from the seed heads of hardy annuals, perennials, bulbs, rock plants, trees and shrubs. Growing plants from seeds you have collected is fantastically rewarding, but you need to be vigilant; seed heads have a nasty habit of ripening and popping whilst your back is turned. Collect when nearly ripe - just as they are turning brown. Snip them off, put them in a paper bag, label and hang somewhere cool, dark and dry.Cuttings of perennials and bedding plants will root well at this time of year and quickly become strong enough to overwinter inside.Train a long flexible shoot to ground level, cut a shallow sloping slit in it, dust the cut surfaces with hormone rooting powder, peg down to hold in place in soil enriched with a little potting compost and wait for it to root.Keep hedges neat and under control for both their appearance and good relations with the neighbours!

LawnsMow regularly but do not bother to feed or water; it is a waste of time and will promote vigorous growth that may not stand up to the rigours of winter. Come autumn, feed with a high phosphate content fertiliser to promote root growth and strengthen the grass for winter. If it has grown out of control whilst you have been away cut it first with the mower blades on the highest setting and then on progressively lower settings until back to the usual level – this will train the grass to grow leafily again. If you are planning a new lawn, start preparing the area by digging and clearing weeds.

Bulbs, flowers and containersPlant autumn flowering bulbs and start to plant spring flowering bulbs, especially tulips, daffodils, alliums, iris and crocus. Always use the side bulbs of tulips and daffodils as they make perfectly good bulbs in their own right. Plant specially prepared hyacinth bulbs for Christmas.Put poinsettias in the dark for 14 hours a day and full light for the remaining 10 hours to encourage the formation of those cheery festive red bracts.Happy Gardening www.thegardencentregroup.co.uk

August - my favourite month of the year!Is anybody else wondering where this year is racing to or is it just a sign that I’m getting old? This month’s issue features a 4-page pull out section celebrating this year’s carnival. We hope you enjoyed the day and on behalf of The Parish Council of Warsop, we’d like to convey our thanks to everyone involved in the organising and running of another successful event - Warsop knows how to put on a good show!In other news, since the last paper went to press, a planning application for 400 homes near the ‘Hills and Holes’ has been submitted. Sadly, by the time this paper reaches your home, the deadline for submitting objections will have passed. The Let Warsop Speak group have been very active ensuring that all residents are aware and have been giving advice on how to object. The Parish Council recently passed a motion to ensure that an objection is noted on behalf of the council.Let us hope that with the help of the Let Warsop Speak group, the District Council pay due diligence to the voices of Warsop residents and people power prevails!

WARSOP

Our Secretary can be contacted on 01623 846281.WF&CG is a community group whose members share an interest in the countryside. We maintain the public footpath network in Warsop, we undertake conservation projects and we provide information about the local environment. www.wfcg.org.uk

Our fifth walk celebrating the anniversary of the 1816 perambulation of the Manor of Warsop will be around Gleadthorpe and Hazel Gap on Saturday 20th August. We will meet at 10am at the parking spaces alongside Budby Pumping Station, accessed from Netherfield Lane. Contact us if you would like more information about this walk other wise you can just turn up on the day. The walk will be about four and a half miles in length, taking about 3 hours. The route will include the Budby Forest stone, Jerusalem’s Well and Gleadthorpe Grange. As part of this project, we have produced a booklet reflecting on the changes to the landscape around Warsop’s parish boundary and describing walking routes. Look out for free copies around Warsop. Our Warsop 1816 to 2016 project is supported by the Big Warsop ROLO fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund.In early June, we completed our annual water vole survey along the banks of the River Meden between the Mill Dam and Stone Bridge. We discovered a lot of evidence that they are still around between the silt trap and the steps on The Carrs but further upstream there were no definite signs that they were present despite several recent sightings near the BMX track and Askew Spa. The lack of traces could have been because the dense growth on the riverbanks this year obscured their burrows, runs and lawns but I would have expected to have found their droppings on the stones at the water’s edge. The water voles have been struggling along the Stonebridge section of the river for several years and another site has been lost due to the building development at the end of Wood Street.

2016 has been a exceptional year for orchids in several sites in our local countryside. In addition to the usual Early Purple and Common Spotted Orchids, I have seen many more Bee Orchids than in most years including a new patch at Warsop Vale and they have reappeared in a place where I have not seen them for around 15 years. I have also seen Marsh Orchids and Fragrant Orchids locally. If you have been cutting your lawn more frequently than in a normal year due to the wet conditions you may appreciate the struggle we have been experiencing keeping local footpaths mown. We are aware that several routes are becoming overgrown and can be unpleasant to walk along, especially following wet weather, but all of the paths we maintain have had at least one cut this year and most should have had their second trim by now. At the moment there are only four volunteers involved in this work and if the weather or other commitments interrupt our schedule we can fall behind with the mowing. If you can spare a few hours on a Thursday morning to help us please get in touch.

Meden Sport Centre Re-build PetitionA petition has been organised to support the commitment to re-building Meden Sport Centre/Meden Baths.Meden baths have been used by the residents of Warsop for many years, however, the building is now outdated and not up to modern standards. Warsop desperately needs a decent swimming and sports facility, like those provided for the people of Mansfield and Mansfield Woodhouse. We support the Warsop Labour Councillors in their request to the Mayor, Kate Allsop, her Cabinet and Mansfield District Council to urgently start the process necessary to provide a new swimming and sports centre for Warsop. Anyone who wishes to show their support to re building Meden Sports Centre can sign the petition at the following places: • Town Hall - Church St • Rowlands Chemist - Church St • Kev’s Barbers - Church St • Sure Start Children’s Centre - Church St• CO-OP - High St • Greetings Card Shop - High St • News and Toys - High St • A Wetton Butchers - Sherwood St• Scrooges - Sherwood St

Poppy Fields Scheme in final for top housing award The Poppy Fields Extra Care Housing Scheme in Mansfield has been shortlisted for a prestigious award. The £8.4m complex of 64 bungalows, houses and apartments, developed and designed by Mansfield District Council, has made the shortlist for Inside Housing’s top 60 development awards 2016 in the category of Best Designed Development of the Year. The winner of the competition will be announced at a ceremony on 14 October 2016.Recently completed, the development at the former Brownlow Road, has been carefully designed to provide safe, secure accommodation to give older people with extra care and support needs the opportunity to live as independently as possible. The scheme has been developed by Mansfield District Council as part of Nottinghamshire County Council’s strategy to improve choice for older adults and an increased range of alternatives to residential care across Nottinghamshire. It includes 48 homes for residents who have been assessed by the county council as having care needs. Ten of these homes are bungalows, built around a peaceful shared courtyard designed to create a calming atmosphere, that are specifically to support people with dementia. A long list of features have been included in the design of the homes to make everyday tasks easier for people with dementia including pull alarms in each room in the event of an emergency and a range of specific alarms and sensors, including alarms to detect trips or falls or residents wandering out of their homes unassisted at night.Other features are level access showers, wheelchair friendly layouts, the extensive use of natural light, clear doors on kitchen units to help residents find items and rooms are laid out to ensure the bathroom is easy to reach from both the bedroom and living room. The main complex includes a communal centre with a special reminiscence room.Portfolio Holder for Housing at Mansfield District Council Cllr Barry Answer said: “This is fantastic news and thoroughly deserved because this development is top drawer and something people in Mansfield can be rightly proud of.“I have met many of the new residents and they are, without exception, thrilled to be living in such high quality housing where they can be well looked after. This is also often a big relief for the families, too, that their loved ones are in a safe, secure and caring environment whilst still retaining their independence.”

NETTO UPDATEWe are pleased to report that the planning application for a new supermarket went to the planning committee on Monday 25th July. By the time you read this paper, we will know whether the application was successful or not. The recommendation from planning officers is that the application should be approved including the demolition of the former Strand Bingo.Unfortunately, since the application was submitted, Sainsbury’s have ceased their partnership with Netto UK. What this means for Warsop’s new store remains uncertain. It is looking doubtful that Netto will be in a position to build although at the time of going to press, they had not withdrawn the application. If planning consent is granted, it will make the site more attractive to a large supermarket chain should Netto pull out.

It’s been a busy time again for the children at Eastlands Junior School. They recently took part in the St Johns big first aid day, The children enjoyed watching the live streaming and they were taught how to react to a choking incident and how to react to a sting and seizure. The gardening club at Eastlands Junior School prepare the coal tubs in Meden Vale for planting (pictured right). The children also celebrated the Queen’s birthday in style with a week full of activities, including on:Monday 6th June the children dressed in red, white and blue and they designed and made a crown fit for the queen. Tuesday 7th June they had a traditional board game afternoon, Wednesday 8th they had afternoon tea served by the PTFA a beetle drive and a singsong, Thursday 9th was a whole school photo followed by Elizabeth Orridge, a local photographer from Sherwood Street, Warsop judging the winner of the King and Queen crowns. Professor Jenny St Claire came along to talk to the children about her role as deputy lieutenant.Friday, the children enjoyed making puppets with Pinxton puppets, they put on a puppet show in the afternoon. The children were supported by parent, carers and family members throughout the week. The children, parents, carers and family members previous knitted to help yarn bomb mansfield.

It’s Hectic at Eastlands

Despite the rain, hundreds of people flocked to Mansfield Market to make the most of the special occasion with rain macs and umbrellas in hand. There was live music by two piece acoustic band Dammit Jack, children’s pony rides, party entertainment and face painting, as well as craft market and giant garden games. The Mansfield Business Improvement District (Mansfield BID), who worked in partnership with the council, also laid on a ‘Design a bag’ competition for children to commemorate the Queen’s 90th Birthday. One lucky winner will have their design printed onto shopping bags which will be distributed at the BID’s evening market in September.Handheld union jack flags, stickers and Mansfield Market shopping bags were given out as well as free Victoria sponge tasters. The event was also free entry to the public and was open to all ages.To mark the event, groups of volunteers helped decorate the town centre via the street art phenomenon known as ‘yarn bombing’, covering trees, railings and lamp posts in patriotic knitted and crocheted pieces.Volunteers jumped at the chance to get involved and to show off their hard work, which was on display until the end of June.

Once the display had ended, volunteers re-collected the street art, washed it and remade it into blankets to give out to local homeless charities to help those in need.Yarn bomb coordinator, Sara Brown of Yankee Yarns wool shop in Mansfield, said: “We’re very proud of all the volunteers who have contributed to the campaign.”Portfolio Holder for Cultural Services, Town and District Centres Cllr David Smith said: “It was great to see so many families turn out to the event, especially considering the terrible weather. "The rain didn’t damped spirits though and lots of family fun was had by all. “I’d like to thank everyone who came to support the town.”

The Talbot, High Street, Warsop, introduced a touch of flamboyant glamour to Warsop at the opening of their newly refurbished toilet facilities. After being told that a toilet refurbishment would not be possible through the pub company, landlady, Karen Emm, decided to take on the project herself, opting to use local trades people wherever possible. Karen not only designed and funded the project but was also hands-on with painting, wallpapering, joinery work, building cubicles and fitting toilet roll holders etc..Much planning was involved before-hand and once work had commenced it became obvious that nothing less than total gutting of the origional toilets would be neccessary. However, they were finally opened on Saturday 2nd July by Carly Hartshaw (pictured right cutting the ribbon) and her grandma Vonnie Hartshaw. Lady customers enjoyed a glass of Preseco to celebrate the event and everyone was over the moon with their new facilities. The Talbot would like to thank family members, friends and staff and local businesses for their help and hard work including: IG Drylining for rebuilding and dryling the walls, Easy Plumbing & Heating, Farrendale Ltd and Carpet Bargain Centre. Thanks also go to Alan Robb for his fantastic plastering and to Carly and Vonnie for helping to make the opening ‘a bit of a do’. The Talbot are also running a selfie competition, inviting ladies to take a selfie with their chosen cubicle hollywood star and sharing it on the Talbot Facebook page. The winner will get a voucher for a burger meal for two and a bottle of Echo Falls together with a goodie bag of freebies. The winning entry will also be printed and displayed in the bar. Closing date for entries is 28th August 2016.

The Friends of ThynghoweThynghowe and the forgotten heritage of Sherwood

www.thynghowe.org.uk www.facebook.com/Thynghowe

In addition to our Vikings of Sherwood project, The Friends of Thynghowe is also one of the groups behind the Nottinghamshire 1000 initiative. The County of Nottinghamshire was first recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle in an entry describing the turbulent events of 1016 when King Æthelred the Unready, his son Edmund Ironside and the Danish Viking Canute disputed the English throne. During the previous century, our part of the country had been land attached to Nottingham which was one of the five boroughs of the Danelaw. The other four boroughs were Derby, Leicester, Stamford and Lincoln.

We are encouraging people to visit the Nottinghamshire 1000 Facebook page to post memories of significant people, places and events that have connections with Nottinghamshire. These events can have could happened anytime in the last 1000 years. We would then like to make a timeline, with an event for every day of the year giving 365 reasons to celebrate our Nottinghamshire heritage and creating a resource for anyone to use. There are also plans to celebrate a thousand years of Nottinghamshire at the end of August. Look out for more details. This may also provide an opportunity to catch up on the progress of our Vikings of Sherwood project including the outcomes of our archaeological excavation adjoining Warsop’s eastern boundary.

You can find out about our activities from our website and Facebook page and you can email us on [email protected] or contact us by phone on 846281.

The Vikings of Sherwood project is supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund.

British Navy in ActionIn August 1816 the main concern for Warsop folk would have been the prospect of a poor harvest due to the impact on the weather of the previous year’s eruption of Mount Tambora. However, international news may also have been of interest as British forces were still in action overseas despite the French Wars being over following Napoleon’s defeat at the Battle of Waterloo. In August 1816, ten British warships supported by five Dutch vessels bombarded the city of Algiers for eight hours, targeting the Barbary Pirates who had been seizing Europeans to sell as slaves. This trade had been continuing for many years with fishing communities in the west of England particularly vulnerable with men and ships taken and villages plundered. (As part of our Warsop 1816 to 2016 project Warsop Footpaths & Countryside Group are sharing local news stories from 200 years ago)

The Boys have played together for the last 4 years and are all local.   4 members of the team attend Sherwood Junior School in Warsop,  the manager & coaches are all Warsop residents and they train every week on Carr Lane Park. Over 300 teams took part in the competition. They started in a league at West Notts College back in August last year, which they won to become County Champions.  They then represented Nottinghamshire at the Regional finals on 4th June 2016 and by winning this they represented the East Midlands Region at the National Finals in Birmingham on 25th June 2016.  They competed against 7 other regional finalists on the day beating a team from Colchester in the final.

Mansfield Town U10’s become National Futsal Champions

What started out as a conversation in Hetts Lane School playground about who would like to make a team when they were 5/6 has turned into a bit of a fairy tale for the lads.

Care home Admits Failing to Ensure Residents' SafetyRecently at Nottingham Crown Court, in a case prosecuted by Mansfield District Council, Embrace All Ltd (formerly European Care (GB) Ltd) admitted its guilt of failing to ensure the safety of residents at Rose Court Lodge care home in Mansfield. The home manager Amanda Dean, of Ambergate, Derbyshire, also admitted failing to take reasonable care for residents. The case arose as a result of an investigation following a fall which occurred on 4 November 2012 at Rose Court Lodge.George Chicken, a 76-year-old resident with dementia, died from injuries he sustained after he fell down fire escape stairs at the home in Sutton Road. Sentence is planned for 8 September 2016 and until the case, is concluded, the council has no further comment.

Seven year old Fae sees her winning flower bed come to life Sutton Road Primary School pupil, Fae Hyatt, has seen her design come to life after winning a competition run by Mansfield District Council to create a showcase flower bed.

Fae pictured third from left planting her winning flower bed design with fellow pupils.

More than 120 children from King Edward School and Sutton Road Primary School took part in the competition and produced numerous designs packed with colours and great ideas. A panel of judges at Mansfield District Council chose three winners from each school and then chose an overall winner. It was seven-year-old Fae who won first place with her colourful artwork and, along with her fellow classmates, she was invited to help create her winning design in the heart of the town's Titchfield Park in the run-up to East Midlands in Bloom 2016.Her winning design can be seen in the flower bed near the busy petanque court area and pavilion. Park visitors will be able to admire the design throughout the summer as the flowers should bloom right through until the first frosts in October. A plaque with Fae’s name will be placed on the flower bed, too.Cllr Andrew Tristram, Mansfield District Council, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “We were overwhelmed by the standard of entries for the competition this year. "Mansfield District Council has been running this competition annually for more than 10 years now but this year has seen a record number of entries. "It’s encouraging to see so many children want to get involved in shaping their local park. By taking part they learn so much about colour, design, plants and the environment.”  Jim Wakeland, Assistant Head Teacher at Sutton Road Primary School, added: “The children love coming to Titchfield Park whatever time of the year it is, and many of the year groups come to see the changes over the different seasons. We also work on projects with Maun Conservation Group in the local area. "When the children were told about the competition they were really keen to get involved. They have learned so much by taking part as they have been able to combine their art skills with their love of the environment. It’s a great way for them to engage with the local environment and have a lot of fun in the process.”The annual competition is just one of the many projects that the district council organises throughout the year as part of its vision to create a positive image of Mansfield. Fae’s new planting design will be one of the many flower beds shown to judges of the East Midlands in Bloom competition when they visit in July.

The council ran a successful month-long campaign in April to crack down on dog fouling in parts of Mansfield after more than 150 complaints of dog fouling across the district between November 2015 and March 2016.Now the council is asking for the public’s help to gather evidence about serial dog fouling offenders by recording details of their activities so that officers have a greater chance of catching them. The dog fouling campaign coincided with the introduction of compulsory dog microchipping in April and came in advance of new powers to come into force across the district in August which will mean dog walkers could be fined if they fail to carry the means to pick up their dog’s faeces.Patrols concentrated on dog fouling hotspots which included streets and alleyways leading to and from parks and open spaces in the district. The first part of the campaign was aimed at educating the dog walkers/owners about compulsory dog microchipping and new rules coming into force in August, with more than 150 “poop scoop bag dispensers” handed out to owners. The second half of the campaign was aimed at enforcing dog fouling legislation. Over the four weeks of the campaign, six £75 fixed penalty notices were issued. During the month of action, more than 70 extra high visibility foot patrols were carried out. Wardens also promoted responsible dog ownership during the relaunch of the Mansfield Market and four microchipping events held in parks during the campaign. Since micro-chipping became compulsory, more than 500 dogs have been “chipped” in the district by the council.

From July 2016, people who complain to the council about dog fouling will be asked for information as to where it is occurring, a description of the dog or dogs, and the owners’ names and addresses, if known. All reports will be logged centrally in order to allow the council to respond more effectively to complaints from the public. It is hoped that this new way of working will help the council to direct neighbourhood wardens and the dog control officer to ensure that they are in the right place at the right time in order to allow them to catch the small minority of irresponsible dog owners who continue to fail to pick up after their dogs have fouled. Portfolio holder for Public Protection Cllr Mick Barton said: “This recent campaign showed that most dog owners had bags and picked up after their dogs.“But dog fouling is still a problem which we want to reduce so we would like residents to help us catch offenders by gathering information about when and where they walk their dogs.“It is evident that the presence of uniformed council staff does deter offenders but it also means we don’t catch the worst offenders, so we really need the public’s help in this.“Dog walkers often take their pets out at regular times which residents may see.   We urge residents to help and tell us where offending owners are walking their dogs and allowing them to foul.  "We need to know what times and days of the week this is happening and also descriptions of owners and dogs to help us to identify and catch them.”Residents can also report dog fouling on the council's website at www.mansfield.gov.uk/dogfouling.

Mansfield District Council Plea for Help Over Dog FoulingMansfield District Council is appealing for the public’s help to deal with serial dog fouling offenders in the district.

The brothers, Tom and Ben, achieved their fourth TT race triumph in the Isle of Man after passing their nearest rivals and cruised past the chequered flag to glory on their LCR Honda with a commanding lead of 38.784 seconds in the Sure Sidecar TT 2 race on Fri 10th June.  Mayor Allsop: “It was a fantastic achievement and the whole of Mansfield is rightly proud of these local heroes and who are  - literally - leaders of the field in the world of sidecar racing. We congratulate them and wish them many more successes in the future.”Ben Birchall said: “I am just so thrilled and honoured to win another TT. The Armed Forces Day event, organised by Mansfield District Council in collaboration with Mansfield Business Improvement District (BID), was an opportunity for local people, to show their appreciation of servicemen and woman, past and present. It was part of a national weekend of events up and down the country to recognise the armed services.Live music and dancing demonstrations and a chance to learn 1940s style dancing were among the features of the day, which saw people of all ages enjoy a day out. Organisations supporting the day included The Army Careers office, Help for Heroes, H.M.S. Sherwood, Royal British Legion, 384 Cadets, 350 Field Squadron, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy Reserves, Mercian Regiment, Home Guard and Mansfield Sea Cadets.Among the attractions were free children’s face painting, a vintage fire engine, tank and military Jeep and craft market. The May Pole Good Time Band provided live music along with 1940s singer Pete Wayre and the St Edmund's Drum and Bugle Corps, from Mansfield Woodhouse, who kicked off the event. Cllr David Smith, the Portfolio Holder for Cultural Services, Town and District Centres, said: “What a fantastic day it was! It was great to see people of all ages coming together and enjoying themselves and being able to show their respect for what our armed forces do and have done for us." Cllr Sean McCallum, the council's armed forces champion, who opened the event with the council's Deputy Chairman, Cllr Kevin Brown, added: "It was a superb fun and well organised event with a great atmosphere and sense of community spirit. The support for the event showed how much Mansfield respects and cares for its armed forces community."The event was organised by Mansfield District Council and Mansfield BID on behalf of the town centre businesses. Match funding was provided by the Ministry of Defence.

Tributes paid after death of Mansfield District Councillor Tributes have been paid to Mansfield District Councillor Lee Probert who passed away suddenly after a short illness. Executive Mayor of Mansfield Kate Allsop said: "I am so saddened by the loss of Lee, She has been an excellent ward councillor and she was warm and genuine. "Lee cared greatly for her community and always worked hard to ensure she helped those who came to her.  But she did so much more than just respond; she was proactively involved with many projects and everything she did was with a smile and a friendly chat. I will miss her greatly and my condolences are with her family, friends and colleagues."  Councillor Probert was elected as ward member for the Yeoman Hill Ward in May 2015 and was an active member of the Labour group. Its Leader, Cllr Sonya Ward, said: "Lee was in office for just over a year. However, in that time she made a real impact.  She was dedicated to her residents and passionate about improving her ward. "Soon after being elected, she organised a successful fundraising Memory Walk for the Alzheimer's Society, and she planned to make this an annual event. She was also an active volunteer for the Samaritans, Mansfield Soup Kitchen and other causes."Lee felt passionately about improving services for people with mental health problems, and pioneered the Mental Health Champion role at Mansfield District Council. Her commitment to the community was appreciated by her district and county council colleagues, alike."People's lives were enriched by having Lee in them. We will remember her fondly for her beaming smile, her warmth, sense of humour and her tenacity, and she will be very much missed."Chief Executive of Mansfield District Council Bev Smith said: "Cllr Probert approached her role with enthusiasm, passion and commitment to make a difference within her community. "She was the first member to become a Mental Health Champion, promoting a wider understanding of the impact that mental health has on individuals."

Somme100About 40 people gathered at the War Memorial to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the Battle of The Somme. That infamous day in British military history when nearly 20,000 thousand men made the ultimate sacrifice and 40.000 were wounded. Zero hour had been set for 7.30am on the 1st of July 1916.Exactly 100 years later, Bill Power blew his first World War whistle to mark the start of our commemoration. Wreaths were laid together with a small wooden cross for each of the Warsop men that gave their lives on that fateful day.

Warsop CarnivalMembers staffed our stall at The Carnival. We had an excellent day telling people about the work of The Royal British Legion and how we help the Service/Ex Service community and their families in times of need.We also raised much needed funds to continue our work in the local area.We had a successful drop-in in July advising two beneficiaries and signing up a new member. The August Drop-in will be on the 5th August at Warsop Town Hall, 10am to 12 noon.We will be visiting Mansfield Bellamy in August so our next Warsop meeting will be held at The Ex-Servicemen’s Club on 12th September at 7.30 pm.All are welcome to attend and you do not need to be Serving/Ex-Service to join.

Compelled to come indoors and watch Wimbledon due to the vagaries of the weather - oh what a shame!  The Choir have performed two super concerts during June with a most varied repertoire and excellent soloists. We have 4 unclaimed raffle prizes left from our Edwinstowe concert.  If you have a winning ticket and wish to claim your prize please contact Jan at 01623 823416The numbers are;Blue    873 and 874 White  178 and190 There is a blog on our website  thedukeriessingers.com  regarding them.  Do log into it.  All our details are on our website  including an invitation to join us . If you enjoy singing you would be most welcome.  We are a very supportive and friendly group of people.  We rehearse every Wednesday from 7-30pm until 9-30pm above the Concert Hall at the Dukeries Academy in Ollerton.  This is best accessed via the Leisure Centre entrance and car park. However, we are taking a three week Summer break.  There will be no rehearsals on 17 August, 24 August and 31 August 2016.We are so looking forward to our next concert which will be a joint one with “Les Baladins des Bords de L’Indre” from Tours, France on Friday 28 October at East Drayton Church. We do not  yet know whether we shall be required to sing in French but we do have a French Lady in the choir and I do know where the dictionaries and phrase books are!I am off outside again to continue the war against the largest population of slugs and snails I have ever known.  The toll is usually -- slugs-Nil,  me-lots! I have a friend who cannot bear to kill them, so collects them in a pot and takes them to a highly plant orientated lay by and releases them for their holiday.Have a lovely pest free Summer.
