  • Gonzaga University belongs to a long and distinguished tradition of...

October 10, 2010 - Students enjoy the last days of warm weather as fall begins to set in. Every year, students experienced all four seasons, with warm Summers, vibrantly colored Autumns, sometimes bitterly cold Winters, and wet but mild Springs. Photo by Zack Berlat

Armed with signs of hope like Gonzaga Loves and Love Thy Neighbor, students met the protesters with a resilient but firm front, shouting messages of hope and love over the protestors hateful statements. The humanistic aspect of a Gonzaga education emphasized the need to learn and respect the flourishing of others, no matter how different they may be from oneself, while exhibiting a thirst for social justice and positive action. The Catholic tradition at Gonzaga University emphasized faith and scholarship by creating a place where students could engage in critical dialogue with others in classes, extra-curricular activities, and by participating in weekly masses. Life Student life is an integral part of the Gonzaga University experience. While going to class is certainly an essential part of life at Gonzaga, plenty of students find a variety of original and creative ways to unwind outside of the classroom. The welcoming environment found on campus cultivates the growth of new friendships, and the activities that Gonzaga students take part in all contribute to this. The fourth week of January 2011 went down in history at Gonzaga. A record number of tents were pitched out in front of the McCarthey Athletic Center. In fact, more than 90 tents were set up on the soggy grass, each one filled with students braving the cold to get a good seat at the Gonzaga versus St. Marys mens basketball game. When the Gonzaga student body thinks of camping out, they think of meeting new people, hot chocolate, and supporting their Bulldogs. Camping out for basketball games has been a longstanding tradition on campus, and has only intensified in scope this year. Fondly dubbed Fewville in honor of the GU basketball coach, this small village of tents appeared for days at a time and mysteriously disappeared almost instantly on game days. Brave students set up tents near Mulligan field, plugged their laptops into one of many power outlets, and loaded on the layers being a Bulldog fan took dedication, and the student body was certainly proud of their commitment to the basketball team. While mens basketball certainly attracts quite a crowd, lots of students also find ways to participate in playing sports. The intramural program at Gonzaga is one of the most popular ways for students to stay active, have fun, and be a little bit competitive at the same time. With more than 80 percent of the student body active in intramurals, Gonzaga students found ways to exercise and stay healthy while enjoying themselves. When GU students werent busy living life outside the comfort of their dorm rooms, they were breaking a serious sweat out on the dance floor. Gonzaga played

host to plenty of dances, and student clubs threw dances as a means to fundraise for trips and events. The mens club soccer team hosted one of the most popular dances of the year in November. Como Tres Llama became a yearly tradition, and was the only dance that took place in the Crosby student center. While most other successful dances were thrown inside Cataldo Hall, Como Tres Llama

packed hundreds of energized students into both levels of Crosby. Another exciting aspect of Como Tres Llama was the taco truck, which was parked conveniently close to the dance floor. The beef tongue tacos were fantastic, said sophomore Dominic Angelo. It was basically the social highlight of the year! We danced until we dropped. There were plenty of other

social activities for students who would rather listen to music than dance to it. The Knitting Factory in downtown Spokane attracted countless GU students with its variety of concerts. 3OH3! and Tech9 both played immensely popular shows downtown. Plenty of upperclassmen serenaded their friends during karaoke nights at the Star Bar, and the Gonzaga Student Body Association also organized a Jay Sean concert in the McCarthey Athletic Center. Sophomore Vineet Mehndiratta attended the show and said that, The lights show was amazing! Jay Sean put on a great show, and even though McCarthey wasnt quite packed, the students who attended were having a blast. It was definitely a solid concert. Students who wanted to attend more of a low-key performance were always present at Coffeehouse, which was held weekly on Wednesday nights at Crosby. Live performers

ranged from musically-inclined GU students to touring comedians who wanted to share their talent with the student body. Maddonnastock also offered Gonzaga student musicians the opportunity to showcase their talents by playing a concert for their peers. One other event marked the pinnacle of the school year: the grand opening of Panda Express. After months of rumors, Panda Express opened up in Cataldo Hall to the cheering sounds of hungry undergraduates. While some students did mourn the loss of Pandinis, the reaction of the vast majority of GU students was overwhelmingly positive to this tasty addition to on-campus dining. The grand opening of Panda Express wasnt the only change made to student dining this year. Spikes became a 24 hour eatery on weekends, a welcome change to students who had begrudged the lack of late-night dining options

available on campus. Sophomore Haley Hulbert was one such student who was quite enthusiastic about the new weekend hours of Spikes. I would rather go to Spikes any day than have to heat up some ramen in my dorm room, so the new hours were definitely a welcome change. Theres always a ton of people in Spikes on weekends too, so the atmosphere is still really lively and fun. Between popular intramural sports and countless concerts, student life at Gonzaga is a veritable smorgasbord of fun activities, food, and a heaping dose of the Bulldog spirit. However, one thing is for certain: the students on campus are what make the activities so unforgettable. The welcoming community that grows out of Gonzaga is evident in every facet of student life, from camping out to sharing a late-night burrito at Spikes with a new friend.

    ServiceStory by Marjan Charness

A commitment to social justice is central to the Gonzaga spirit. Social justice goes beyond the Universitys mission statement it presents itself through the actions of the students. Gonzaga University has a passion for teaching its students much more than just academics: educating the person as a whole is a huge part of Jesuit education, and a focus on community service played an important role in developing curas personalis, or care of the whole person. Everyday, students took the lessons learned in the classroom and applied them within the community. A world-class education is great, but an education that served to aid the underprivileged and marginalized is even better. To further the commitment to service, student clubs were required to participate in some sort of community service. Being able to serve the community and bond as a team is like the best of both worlds. We get to accomplish something that positively impacts Spokane and we get to spend time together growing as a team, said sophomore Megan Camper, a member of the Gonzaga dance team. Different on-campus clubs all found a variety of ways to positively impact the Spokane community. The Knights and Setons put on different events that benefitted the Union Gospel Mission, a shelter located just southeast of campus. One Seton, sophomore Kaitlin Pursley, said, Weve raised more than $15,000 for the Union Gospel Mission this year alone. Each week we go to the Mission, help out the greater Spokane community, and unite as an organization. Some campus organizations were solely committed to community service. For example, Campus Kids was an organization that served grade-school students of the Spokane community. Once a week, a school bus pulled up on campus and plenty of energetic, enthusiastic kids happily ran off to be mentored and helped with school work. Other clubs like Speak Up! and Just Desserts sought to raise awareness among the student body about pressing issues that facing society. Different events, all of them organized by students, gave other Gonzaga students the opportunity to envision themselves in the position of another member of society. Alison Hogue organized Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, which culminated in students having the opportunity to sleep outside and experience one night being homeless. Be Hope 2 Her was another organization that gave

students the chance to experience the daily struggles of life in sub-Saharan Africa. Students could be seen walking around campus with buckets of water on their heads, undergoing the same difficulties that thousands of women go through on a daily basis to collect water for their families. Plenty of Gonzaga students were also eager to volunteer within their own neighborhood. Since many Gonzaga upperclassmen lived in the neighborhood, on any given weekend hundreds of students could be seen wandering the streets of Logan. Because of the centrality of the Logan neighborhood in student life, the Gonzaga Student Body Association advocated that students take an active role in cleaning up and maintaining the beauty of the neighborhood. Because of this, Take Back the Neighborhood became a regular community service event for Gonzaga students. Take Back the Neighborhood is a really great cause for students to get involved in. We spend so much time in the neighborhood that it seems fitting to commit ourselves to helping it look nice, said sophomore Paul Hughes. Whether on campus or off, it was always easy to see the impact that community service had on the lives of the students. Remaining true to the mission of the University, students gave up their own free time not because they had to, but because they realized their duty to others in the world. The Mission Statement dictates that students are encouraged to develop a desire for truth, a mature concern for others, and a thirst for justice. During the 2010-2011 school year, it seemed that students had taken this statement to heart and made a difference in the world.

Mission: Possible allows students to commit early in the school year to spend their Spring Break serving communities all across the United States. After their selection, the students began their fund-raising, which consisted mostly of writing letters to friends and family members asking for donations. After nearly six months of waiting and preparing, students traveled to cities such as Portland, OR and Parma, ID, to as far as across the country to Jonestown, MS in March 2011. These students served the communities in various ways, from re-roofing homes and cleaning up the local environment, to helping teach refugees from other countries the English language and valuable job skills. Mission: Possible was a way for these students to meet some of the peers they had not previously known and allowed them to work closely together for a common cause. According to SR Jennifer Hahn, who spent her Spring Break working in San Francisco, CA, Mission: Possible shared the Jesuit mission of social justice with the marginalized in America and the experience shaped my time at Gonzaga. SR Nolan Grady works with other students to paint the interior of a house in Parma, ID. This was one of many projects accomplished by this team during Mission: Possible 2011.

In Knoxville, TN, JR Alicia Bowers repairs a roof under careful supervision with several of her classmates. Much of their time in Tennessee was spent repairing homes for those living in that community.

    AcademicsStory by Marjan Charness

The academic atmosphere at Gonzaga is intense, to say the least. With six different schools and more than thirty fields of study, it isnt surprising that the average Gonzaga student is committed to his or her coursework. In fact, during finals and midterms, its generally a safe bet that students spend more time in the Foley Library than they do asleep in their dorm rooms. Part of the reason that Gonzaga students receive such a comprehensive education is because of the academic core, which requires them to take a variety of courses outside of their majors. These courses are numerous, and include topics ranging from the Philosophy of Human Nature to Sex, Gender, and Society. While the core can certainly present a variety of academic challenges to the students at Gonzaga, it ultimately contributes to graduating seniors being the beneficiaries of a very broad and comprehensive education. The core is definitely difficult, but Im glad its required. It gives me the chance to take classes that are applicable to everyday life outside of my major, which I can certainly appreciate, said sophomore Kevin Johnston, a biology major. Another unique aspect of the core is the social justice requirement. A variety of courses covering different topics can be taken to fulfill the social justice prerequisite. These classes often have a service-learning aspect incorporated into the coursework, which gives students the opportunity to apply what they learned in the classroom to helping their community and raising awareness about problems affecting society. One major component of these classes is a call to action to inspire students to do more to positively impact their community. Emilia Monroe, a sophomore, took Women and Comparative Societies, a social justice course with a service learning element. Part of her coursework involved helping organize events to publicize author Greg Mortensons visit to campus to speak about educating girls in the Middle East. A portion of the class involved putting on events to fundraise for Mortensons work building schools for girls in the Middle East. Another big aspect of the class was educating the Gonzaga community about the problems that so many girls face doing something as simple as obtaining an education. It was really nice to take a course where I learned from actions and events rather than just a textbook, said Monroe. Gonzaga is also well-known by employers for doing

a phenomenal job preparing its students with plenty of real-life experience that theyll use once they enter the job market. Gonzagas pre-professional programs especially emphasize the importance of taking skills learned in the classroom and applying them directly to the professional world. Even liberal arts courses common in the College of Arts and Sciences have a large amount of applicability to post-graduation work. Gonzagas broadcasting major is really more a pre-professional degree, which is perfect for our field. In TV, the most important thing is experience; you can sit around in a lecture hall and take notes on how to operate a camera or how to anchor the news, but getting real life experience is the only way to improve. Gonzagas program realizes that and allows us to get started freshman year so we can actually land a job upon graduation, said Greg Talbot, a sophomore majoring in broadcasting.

Professors at Gonzaga also share the sentiment that students should be actively involved in their education, rather than just passively absorbing information in crowded lecture halls. Dr. Laura Brunell is the chair of the Political Science department at Gonzaga, and made it a point to make a connection between academia

and the real world in her classes. I am a firm believer in experiential education and pushing students to make connections between the issues and theories that we study in the classroom and the world out there. Thats why I encourage them to attend extra-curricular events and plan and put on many of these events myself. We do not live in a vacuum. Opportunities to experience and change the world are all around us and tools like the internet connect us to people and causes all over the world. We dont have to wait till we are done with our educations to be the change we want to see in the world. Our education will never end anyway, so we should be and are active, engaged learners, said Dr. Brunell. An education from Gonzaga will take students a long way in life. By learning such a wide variety of topic and issues, graduates can be certain that their degree will mean more in the professional world. More than just teaching abstract topics and textbooks, professors at Gonzaga teach students how to become engaged in the world surrounding them, a skill that will always hold its value in the marketplace.

We do not live in a vacuum. Opportunities to experience and change the world are all around us... - Dr. Laura Brunell

I think the business school provides a great mix of theory and real-world application, says SR Zoeanna Mayhook, It really works to help Gonzaga students succeed as future business leaders. The school of business encompassed a variety of different studies, varying from accounting to concentrations in marketing and human resources. Photo by Zack Berlat

JR Gregory Condas directs a Gonzaga University Television show in the production control room of the Broadcasting Department. Broadcasting and Electronic Media majors were required to show their ability to produce and direct television shows they created every week live on channel 15. The program provided a great real-world environment for working as a team against deadlines to convey messages to an audience. It was challenging, but I feel like I am ready to work in the real world now, said Gregory.Photo by Zack Berlat

Take your pick of seniors: the complete offensive game of Courtney Vandersloot, the clutch outside shooting of Janelle Bekkering or the engaging personality of Carter Schick. In 2010-2011, Gonzaga womens basketball had an incredible balance of star talent, a fast and exciting style of play and a genuine likability that made them a Cinderella to believe in for the NCAA tournament. They showed that prowess as an eleven seed, defeating sixth-seeded Iowa, third-seeded UCLA and seventh-seeded Louisville before falling to the top-seeded Stanford Cardinal. It was the first Elite Eight appearance in program history. I think every team sets goals at the beginning of the year and this team achieved the goals that we set, Vandersloot said in press conference after the Stanford game. This is exactly where we wanted to be and we believed that we were going to win the game today but were going to reflect back and this is something that nobodys ever done and were excited about it. It took overcoming a slow start to get to that tournament run, however. Coming off the most successful season in program history, the Bulldogs began the year with a modest 2-3 record, losing three games by a combined 13 points. They went on a 26-1 tear to finish the season, which included a perfect 14-0 record in conference play. The only loss during that stretch came at the hands of national runner-up Notre Dame. At seasons end, the Zags led the nation in points per game (85.3) and Vandersloot led the nation in assists per game (10.2). She became the only player in NCAA history to amass 2000 points and 1000 assists in a career. Among her laundry list of accomplishments were winning the Francis Pomeroy Naismith Award, given to the nations top player 5-foot-8-inches and shorter, being selected third overall in the WNBA draft, and receiving an invite to the USA womens national team training camp. You saw all the people that were here and the people that have been following us, make no mistake about it, theyre Gonzaga fans, head coach Kelly Graves said after the Stanford game. But Courtney Vandersloot brought these people here and she deserves just a ton of credit for that. She has made Gonzaga womens basketball cool and something that people notice and love. Adversity was also the theme of the early year for a mens basketball team that started 4-5, the first time since 1992-1993 that Gonzaga had a record below .500 at any point in the season. The Bulldogs went on to lose only four

regular season games the rest of the year, thanks in part to the leadership of lone senior Steven Gray and the emergence of newcomers Marquise Carter and Sam Dower. Also as an 11 seed in the first round, the Bulldogs downed highly-touted St. Johns and first year head coach Steve Lavin. Gonzaga truly played its best basketball at the end of the season, as Carter scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Bulldogs past the Red Storm. They lost a second-round contest to future WCC foe BYU and the name that was making headlines for each of the last two seasons: Jimmer Fredette. By recent Gonzaga standards it was a down year, but the first-round tournament upset showed that the Zags can still get it done come March. After solid tournament performances by the basketball teams in March, Gonzaga baseball made sure there would be no apathy in April for Bulldog faithful. Through 33 games, the Zags posted a 21-11-1 record, which eclipsed the total win mark of 2010 (20-36). Early on, Gonzaga showed signs of its

2009 form when it won the WCC and competed in the College World Series. We are all pulling for each other. We had a similar attitude in 2009 when I redshirted but last year ther
