GONDWANA CONNECTION Wildlife Tours have developed this 16 day tour to Milne Bay Province,
Papua New Guinea so as to introduce our customers to the wonderful diversity of birdlife/wildlife to be
found in this extremely beautiful region. As the tour name suggests, we will endeavour to pick up all of the
endemic bird species from this province except the Oba Tabu White-eye. Due to the very restricted
distribution of this bird and the constraints incurred by tour length, it is just not possible to attempt to locate
them.
Milne Bay does not have the birding reputation of the Central/Western Provinces, but with over 400 species
of birds, this area presents itself as a great destination.
This time of the year has been selected as it presents the BOP’s at there their best. We will have the
opportunity to see two of the Milne Bay endemic birds, the Goldie’s Bird of Paradise and Curl-crested
Manucode while visiting Normanby Islands.
Birding in PNG can be a bit of an expensive exercise at times and movement from one site to another
certainly adds to this cost. What we have done is to centre our activities in Alotau, the provincial capital and
work out into the surrounding areas. This will involve a five and six night stay in villages away from town.
The village stay network being developed in Milne Bay allows for the opportunity to experience the lifestyle
of these great people. At the same time putting you in the middle of what you have travelled to PNG to see,
wildlife and this absolutely incredible country.
These facilities are a little basic, but comfortable, the food wonderful and the people very friendly. Local
guides will take us out and introduce you to what they know so very well.
By utilizing these facilities, we are able to offer a truly memorable experience; plenty of wildlife and at the
same time keep the price at a manageable level.

Tour details
Tour starts and finishes: Cairns in North Queensland
Scheduled departure and return dates: This tour will start with an introductory evening meal, giving
participants an opportunity to meet. Please ensure that you are in Cairns prior to or on the 25th
October. Tour
will finish back in Cairns on the 10th
November. Further details in relation to flights are to be found in the
itinerary attached.
Tour leader: Des Hume, with experienced, English speaking local guides on arriving in Milne Bay.
Difficulty: A medium level of fitness will be required to participate in this tour. Most days will consist of
relatively easy walking conditions, but there are a couple of sites that will require a little more exertion. The
trek up to the Goldie’s BOP lek on Normanby Island will be the most difficult elements (See itinerary for
further details). Most days on the mainland, we will have a 4wd at our disposal, so there are no long walking
distances to be carried out.
Boating from the mainland out to Normanby will involve a couple of hours in an open boat. Also, during the
six days in the Louisiade Archipelago there will be considerable distances covered in boats, but
October/November generally offers, good boating conditions.
What to bring: We ask for participants to travel light. This is particularly important when on our little
forays away from Alotau. Heavy suit-cases can be left safely locked away at our Alotau accommodation at
Napatana Lodge, but you will require a lighter bag for your effects/clothing.
Items like binoculars, camera, mobile phone, chargers, British style power adaptors, strong insect repellent,
sunscreen, personal medications, water bottle and hand sanitizer are necessary.
Clothing: November is generally beautiful mild weather, so clothing taken should allow for this.
Lightweight long pants, long-sleeved shirts and t-shirts will be most suitable. A warmer jumper/jacket for
evenings and a showerproof jacket should also be included in your kit to play it safe. Don’t forget a hat and
sturdy boots as well.
Group size: A maximum group of three participants is required.
Cost: AU$5995 p/p twin share. See inclusion/exclusions and terms/conditions for additional details.

Birding Milne Bay’s Endemics2019
Itinerary
Day 1 (25th
October): Our Air Niugini flight will depart Cairns Airport at 09.55 and arrive in Alotau at
16.15. A stop-over and flight change will be required in Port Moresby.
On arrival at Gurney Airport/Alotau, we will be transferred to our accommodation at Napatana Lodge.
Overnight at Napatana Lodge in en-suite bungalows. Meals included B,L,D.
Day 2 (26th
October):
After breakfast we will organize our gear for the first of the village stay parts of this tour. Three nights on
the islands will allow for an experience of a very different kind.
At the end of our drive to East Cape, our guide and host, Waiyaki Nemani will escort us by banana boat out
to Sibonai Village on Normanby Island in the D’Entrecasteaux Islands.
On the way across, time and conditions permitting, we will have a quick stop off at Boiaboiawaga Island.
This will allow us to have a shot at the first of island birdlife. This
small uninhabited island is a roosting site for Lesser Frigate
Birds and also the home of species such as the Mangrove Golden
Whistler.
Sibonai is located at the eastern end of Sewa Bay at the base of
rainforest clad mountains. Despite the remoteness, mobile phone
coverage only requires a fifty meter off shore paddle into the
beautiful Sewa Bay in a dugout canoe. The village itself has no
coverage due to the wonderful tall rainforest surrounds. After
meeting our hosts and dropping our gear off, lunch will be served. The afternoon walk will take us along
the river and through Sago Palm swamps. These areas will offer very different species to the higher ground
to be covered tomorrow. The Yellow-billed Kingfisher is common in the garden near our accommodation
and this being the larger Milne Bay endemic sub-species S. t. ochracea. The Purple-bellied Lory is a
regular sighting out here, when it is the Black-capped Lory most frequently seen on the mainland.
Slaty-grey Snake Spectacled Longbill Litoria genimaculata
After dinner, we will head out for a bit of night spotting. This area offers Barred Owlet-nightjars, Papuan
Frogmouth, Marbled Frogmouth and the Papuan Boobook Ninox theomacha goldii. Herping here offers
some great species and the invertebrate enthusiasts will not feel neglected. Watch for the harmless Papuan
Ground Boas.
Overnight at Sibonai Guesthouse in bush materials bungalows. Shared shower and toilet facilities.
Meals included B,L,D
Day 3 (27th
October):
An early breakfast in Sibonai includes a procession of birds that will get you itching to get out there.
Amongst these are the beautiful Black Sunbirds, Golden and Hooded Monarch.
Today we will focus on the area along the bay’s shore-line and up onto
the slopes above the guesthouse. The Curl-crested Manucode (E)
D’Entrecasteaux Pitta (E) will be a prime target and watching the near-
by fruiting trees, always turns up a multitude of species. For the herpers,
we got a Milne Bay endemic, the Bogert’s Monitor (E) near the village
gardens on our last visit.
Overnight at Sibonai Guesthouse in bush materials bungalows. Shared
shower and toilet facilities. Meals included B,L,D
Day 4 (28th
October):
This morning’s activity will involve birding along the bays edge and
immediate area around the village. Just conserving our energy for what is
to follow.
The walk this afternoon will take us up the river into the higher country. This offers the first chance to pick
up target species such as the Goldie’s Bird of Paradise (E) at their lek. To allow us to see the Goldie’s
BOP displaying, we will have to be there in the late afternoon. This in itself is a bit problematic, as it takes
over two hours to get up there and requires several crossings of the river and we really want to get back to
the village shortly after dark. This takes some effort, but to have this remarkable bird displaying eight to ten
meters over your head, it is worth every aching muscle.
Overnight at Sibonai Guesthouse in bush materials bungalows. Shared shower and toilet facilities.
Meals included B,L,D
Day 5 (29th
October):
After breakfast we will have the opportunity to do a last bit of birding around the lodge.
Around mid-morning, we will hop on board our boat for the trip back to East Cape , but the bird spotting
will continue. Hundreds of Black Noddy can be seen over the open water, but keep an eye open for the odd
Brown Noddy that can be mixed in. Sightings of Brown Booby, White-breasted Sea Eagles, Lesser
Frigate Birds and other Tern species will keep you interested. The Flying Fish in themselves offer much
amusement as they skip and glide over the water.
On arriving back on the mainland, we will jump aboard a PMV and our day will finish up back in Alotau.
This offering a little bit of spoiling. Real toilets, hot showers cold beers and the like.
Overnight at Napatana Lodge in en-suite bungalows. Meals included B,L,D
Day 6 (30th
October):
After breakfast we will be joined by our guide Enoch Bulunamur and head off by road to our next temporary
home, Hilltop Guesthouse near Saisaida Village in the Sagarai Valley. There will be the opportunity to stop
at several points along the way for a bit of wildlife spotting.
Hilltop is owned and run by the local mission and
proceeds go towards running the mission’s “School of
Destiny”. Pastor Douglas Pitoni and his band of volunteer
teachers offer the opportunity to give the areas young
children a strong start to their education. In addition to
this, they also provide a very enjoyable place for us to
spend a couple of days.
Lunch will be followed by a
walk through the nearby
areas of Alluvial Rainforest
and we should pick up some nice birds including, hopefully the King Bird of
Paradise. For the kingfisher enthusiasts, both Common and Brown-headed
Paradise Kingfishers are relatively common here. The Hook-billed
Kingfisher can be heard calling most nights and with a little effort can be
picked up during the day. This area is also a great spot for the Palm
Cockatoos, which are very common and can even be spotted from our
accommodation. Not to forget those with herp interests, we have previously
located Emerald Monitors and Green Tree Pythons in this area. Night walk
will be available.
Overnight at Hilltop Guesthouse in bush materials bungalow with basic
shared toilet and wash facilities. Meals included B,L,D
Day 7 (31st October):
Today will involve hiking back out into areas away from the village. Most
trails are easy walking over flat ground. Included in the diverse birdlife of
the area are Eclectus Parrots, Blyth’s Hornbill, Fawn-breasted
Bowerbird, Pinon Imperial Pigeon, Raggiana BOP, Hooded and Papuan
Pittas. Our local guides will do their best to locate as many notable ticks as
possible for us. Night walk will be available.
Overnight at Hilltop Guesthouse in bush materials bungalow with basic
shared toilet and wash facilities. Meals included B,L,D
Day 8 (1st November):
The plan for today is to drive a little further afield and the primary targets will include the Southern
Crowned Pigeons. Obviously, lots more will be encountered. A night walk will be on offer again for those
interested and a wonderful reptile species that we find on these walks is the very beautiful, large crepuscular
skink, Sphenomorphus muelleri.
Overnight at Hilltop Guesthouse in bush materials bungalow with basic shared toilet and wash facilities.
Meals included B,L,D
Cyrtodactylus epiroticus Sphenomorphus muelleri
Day 9 (2nd
November):
After an early breakfast and farewells done, we will drive back to Alotau. Once dropping off our hire
vehicle, we will then dash back to the airport and catch our flight to Misima Island in the Louisiade
Archipelago. Flight touches down at 11.30 and once dropping our gear into our rooms, lunch will be served.
Afternoon birding will take us down along the bay’s Mangrove areas and Pandanus groves.
Overnight at Misima Guesthouse, with shared shower and toilet facilities. Meals included B-L-D.
Day 10 (3rd
November):
Today we head out by open dinghy for six days of exploring the far off islands and atolls of the Louisiade
Archipelago. The day will be broken up by various stops on small un-inhabited islands and beautiful coral
atolls. Birds to be found nesting on these include Brown Boobies, Masked Boobies, Floury Imperial
Pigeon, Louisiade White-eye (E) and Spectacled Monarchs. Pods of Spinner Dolphins are also regularly
encountered.
Once reaching Tagula on Sudest Island, we will set up for
the night and off course there will be a little time for some
birding nearby. The first of the Sudest Island endemics, the
Tagula Meliphaga (E) is a common species here.
Tonight will be spent at Tagula, with basic wash and toilet
facilities. Meals included B-L-D
Day 11 (4th
November:
After breakfast, there will be time for some birding near-by
and we then head off again by boat.
After travelling out through the Yuma/Snake Passage, we will head out to a small islet that has a sizable
breeding population of Floury Imperial Pigeons and Black Noddies. We then head over to Rambuso Creek
Mission. This site allows for us to head up onto the slopes in pursuit of Tagula Butcherbird (E), Tagula
White-eyes (E), Louisiade Whistler (E), Grey Whistler, Louisiade Flowerpecker (E) and many more.
Stay night at Rambuso Creek Guesthouse with basic shared washing and toilet facilities.
Meals included B-L-D
Day 12 (5th
November):
Some early morning birding, followed by breakfast will start
our day of. We then boat a little further along Sudest Island
before heading out to our very exciting next stop on Rossel
Island.
This remote island offers the last of our Milne Bay endemic
potential targets, the Rossel Paradise Kingfisher (E), Rossel
Cicadbird (R), Louisiade Pitta (E) and White-chinned
Myzomela (E). These islands also offer numerous endemic
sub-species and other beauties like the White-bibbed Fruit-
dove.
Tonight will be spent in Pambwa Village, with shared basic wash and toilet facilities. Meals included B-L-D
Day 13 (6th
November):
The whole of today will be spent birding on Rossel Island, with guidance from our local guide.
Tonight will be spent in Pambwa Village, with shared basic wash and toilet facilities. Meals included B-L-D
Day 14 (7th
November):
On having breakfast and taking in a little more birding and farewelling our hosts, we head off again by about
10.00am. We will have a fair distance to boat today, as we need to be back in Tagula before nightfall. There
will obviously be a couple of stops along the way to stretch our legs and pick up a few more ticks.
Tonight will be spent at Tagula, with basic wash and toilet facilities. Meals included B-L-D
Day 15 (8th
November):
We will spend the morning working our way back to Bwagaoia on Misima Island. On arriving back at the
Misima Guesthouse, there will be time for a shower, late lunch and a cold beer.
The balance of the day will allow for a wonder around town, bit of birding along the bay or just put your feet
up and relax.
Overnight at Misima Guesthouse, with shared shower and toilet facilities. Meals included B-L-D.
Day 16 (9th
November):
As our flight does not depart until 12.00, we will pop up to do a bit of birding out near the old mine site fpr a
couple of hours. Being higher ground, there should be a few additional species on offer.
Our flight is less than an hour long and on arriving back in Alotau, we will be transferred back to Napatana
Lodge for showers and a relaxed lunch. The afternoon is free to visit town and pick up a few souvenirs if so
desired.
Farewell drinks and dinner at Napatana will allow for us to say thank you and farewell to all.
