Celebrating Dasara andNavarathri, Bharatiya VidyaBhavan too like year after yeararranged an impressive range ofdolls.

The festival wasinaugurated by senior kannadacine artist and producerSmt. Girija Lokesh, addressingthe gathering, she said ‘’I feel soproud to be part of this festivalhere. I remember, I used to

come at Bhavan for my dancerehearsals. At home, we toocelebrate the festival with dollsthat are a 100 years old. It is ourresponsibility to carry forward thetradition and pass it on to theyounger generations. I feel happybeing part of this celebration.’’

This year’s Nitya Nritya,

a three decade old festival byNupura which was held atBharatiya Vidya Bhavan wasdedicated to renowned scholarlate Shri BVK Shastry on theoccasion of his birth centenary.

Shri. BVK Shastry, underthe pen name ‘Murali’, was acelebrated music and dancecritic. Recipient of around sevenprestigious awards for hisremarkable work, he had

endeared himself to people withhis humble and simple nature.

Nitya Nritya was athree-day festival of dance andmusic. Shri. Venugopal, RegionalDirector ICCR, was the chiefguest and Shri. Chiranjeev Singh,former ambassador to UNESCO,who also served Govt. ofKarnataka, was the guest ofhonor.

Shri. Chiranjeev Singh said,“he was a remarkable art critic.It is rare to find someone towrite about all the art forms. His criticism was never harsh.In fact, it was always constructiveand provided guidance to severalresearch scholars and I’mhonoured to speak about him.’’

Speaking about ShriShastry ji, Venugopal said,“he was a walking encyclopedia.He had immense knowledgeabout music and other arts.His paintings are also relevant.’’

Dr. Lalitha Srinivasan,

Director of Nupura, said,

“Shashtriji was a pioneering guru.

We did programs with artists of

great respect and prominence.’’

She expressed gratitude to the

Nupura team and Bhavan’s staff

for enabling this festival.

Highlight of the day was

the dance Sakhyam, depicting

the eternal friendship of Krishna

and Yamuna. It was performed

by Anuradha, Ramaa and

Radhika.

Loka Sangeet andMardala Vadan was presentedby Dr. Padmalaya Garabadu andtroupe on 2nd July 2018-. Thesefolk songs have been responsiblefor the popularity of Champu,Chaupadi (small poems),Chhanda (metre of a poem),Janana (Prayer), Bhajana (Hymn)and Kirtana (religious songs sungon streets). The unison of softword in Pallee Sangeet and itsmode of recitation entertained thelisteners. Dr. PadmalayaGarabadu, Dr. Sangeeta Gosain

and Sushree Sumitra Mahapatra(the three sisters) have contributedgreatly towards the popularity ofPallee Sangeet of Odisha.

Sanchar Nrutya waspresented by Sri. BhaktaramBhumia and troupe on 16th July2018 . The specialty of SancharNritya is the twist footed dancewith song, music and tala. This western Odisha folk Art isknown as another form ofUtkaliya Pala. Pala meanscarrier and signifies transporterof Literature and Culture incoastal enka of Odisha. SimilarlyDaskathi and Sanchar Nritya areconsidered as the main tools forthe spread of culture andliterature in South and Westernregion of Odisha respectively.

Sanchar Nritya is performedon the village roads duringmoonlight night. It is alsoperformed in dance groups onthe occasion of various yatra,Rasa Purnima and BhagabatParayam.

Folk Song of westernOdisha was presented by Shri.Nabin Kuanar and troupe on 6th

July 2018 . West Odisha has aunique place in the culturaltradition of Odisha. Diverse folksongs still exist in villages ofwestern Odisha. Amongst themwhich charm the audience mostare Rasarkeli, Sajani, Dalkhai,Jaiphoola etc. The core subjectsof western Odisha’s Folk songsare based on love, affection andtales of agony of marital life.

Taming of the wild waspresented by Doll theatre,Kolkata on 22nd July 2018 .Dolls Theatre of Kolkata isone of the most popular PuppetGroup of India. It was formed in1990 under the leadership ofSudip Gupta. This Puppet Theatredoes not use dialogues. He usesboth Hindustani and Western

At various stagesthis drama (Opera) has beenstaged thousands of times undervarious titles carrying a strongmessage to the audience of thehazards of alcoholism and drugaddiction.

Dhumpa Sangeet waspresented by Gadadhar DhumpaSangeet Parisad on 17th

September 2018. DhumpaSangeet of Khandapada is recitedduring rainy season, like therecitation of rain songs of NorthIndia. These songs are based onthe traditional love of Radha andKrishna. The core of DhumpaSangeet is a musical instrument

named Dhumpa. The musicproduced by this instrument isvery sweet and melodious; byhearing this the listener becomesecstatic instantaneously.

Dhumpa Sangeet is the songof rain and forest. This musicalinstrument Dhumpa wasintroduced by the Tribal in ancienttimes. Later its refined versionseems to have manifested in theprincely state of Khanda Padaand Baramba.

The framer of DhumpaSangeet prevalent in Khandapadawas Shri Gadadhar SinghaSamant the renowned son ofShri Pathani Samanta, MahamahaUpadhya the legendaryastronomer. The Dhumpa is madeup of the bark of Mohi orBhendia Mardan tree found inforests. In Dhumpa Sangeetharmonium, Mardal (drum),

Patriotic songs by youngstudents was presented on 15thAugust 2018. This excellentperformance included Villu pattu(songs with the traditional musicalinstrument). Children of dailywage laborers and auto driverscame dressed in different

costumes of National leaders andgave a brief introduction. Theyalso gave a presentation onSwachh Bharat and Road trafficsense.

Music Festival - DasaSinchana was presented byVidushi Gowri Sudha Muralion 26th August 2018 . Audienceenjoyed the melodiousprogramme that consisted ofPurandhara Dasa’s songs.

Hindustani Vocal byShri.Arjun Roy and troupe andSantoor program by Shri. Dishariand troupe was held andHindustani Vocal was performedby Shri Arjun Roy, who startedthe programme with a lightclassical song based on differentragas and ended with a verymelodious Thumri. qawl is an Arabic word meaning“utterance”. The person whorepeats or sings a qawl is aqawwal. What a qawwal sings isqawwali. The program was acombination of various qawwalisperformed with informativeintroductions and explanationsinterspersed throughout.
