Goliad MassacreCHAPTER 10.2

General Urrea Marches North•While Santa Anna fought the Texans at the Alamo, General Urrea’s army took the Atascosito Road & marched northeast.

Urrea Defeats Texans•Urrea defeated 50 Texans in San Patricio on February 27, 1836 & another 50 on March 2nd.

•Urrea’s army then continued toward the presidio at Goliad, where Colonel Fannin led 300 Texans.

Colonel Fannin•Col. Fannin received William B. Travis’ letter asking for reinforcements at the Alamo.

•On February 28th, Fannin & his men set out, but a wagon broke down & supplies were running out.

Fighting at Refugio•Col. Fannin sent 100 men to help the Texans at Refugio defend against Urrea.

•The men tried to retreat, but were captured & sent to Goliad.

Fannin Disobeys•Col. Fannin disobeyed Sam Houston’s order to retreat to Victoria on March 14th.

•Sam Houston wanted to organize the Texan soldiers & train them before fighting the Mexican Army.

Battle of Coleto• When he finally

began to retreat 5 days later, his 300 troops were attacked by Urrea’s army at Coleto Creek.

• By the next morning, Fannin surrendered & his surviving troops were taken to Goliad.

Goliad Massacre•Santa Anna ordered all Texan captives in Goliad to be shot.

•On Palm Sunday, March 27, 1836, the Texans were split into 3 groups, marched out of the presidio & shot.

Goliad Massacre• The soldiers then returned to the presidio & executed the wounded.

• In all, 342 Texan soldiers were massacred; many of their bodies were burned.

•Col. Fannin was the last to be executed.
