Holy cow! What a season we just had. It was one of the busiest seasons in years. It

fi nally looks like the upturn is here and we are all excited to see that happen. Course owners, golf management companies, general managers and pros all generally agree that this past season was one of the best in the past four or fi ve years. Mike Calbot, the world famous “Golf Doctor,” told us that his lessons and swing analysis programs out at Old Corkscrew were running in high gear. It now looks like it will be even better for the coming season. Along with the increase in golf rounds and increase in new memberships at many of our 200-plus courses down here, we found many locations had more great news for new and second home clients and for realtors and builders alike. The market is starting to correct as I write this tome, and many realtors such as Phillip Rigsby and others in this market are starting to plan for the coming year when things should really kick in. We heard last week that another great community, Heri-tage Bay, was turned over by Lennar Homes to the members. Heritage Bay is now a fully bundled community with 27 golfer-friendly holes and beautiful view throughout the entire location. In other golf news, Mike Dopsloff, former GM at Ar-rowhead, is in the process of creating a brand new amateur tournament program down our way. Doug Burnham, former GM at Spanish Wells, and now a member of the Choice Team at Prudential Florida Realty, is in the process of put-ting together a super golf travel group called Tee Up Travel. Down at Greenlinks at Lely, there is a shiny new restaurant appropriately called Sam Snead’s. If you go there at lunch time, be sure to say hello to Dan Sullivan, Director of Sales and Marketing for Greenlinks. Upcoming events are starting to fi ll the calendar here for the fall and winter months. The CME Ladies event and the Champions Tour Ace Group Classic will be held out at Twin Eagles. And it looks like the Shark Shootout will be on tap at Tiburon again this year. As always, we will be out supporting all of these top professional tournaments in our area. He watched other players shape shots, listened to how they did it and then practiced what he learned. To hit a shot like Bubba did requires some basic ingredients.

First, talent never hurts. The players on the PGA Tour have hand-eye coordina-tion that rivals the top athletes in all other sports. Second, to hit a shot with lots of shape, you must know the ball-fl ight laws.1) To hook a ball the clubface has to be

closed to the path of the club;2) To slice a ball, the clubface has to be

open to the path of the club;3) You have to practice hitting shots that

deviate from the norm. In other words, in your practice

sessions you should have some fun and experiment with hitting balls that turn left, balls that turn right, low balls and high balls. Don’t fall into the habit of just trying to hit straight shots on the practice tee.

Put some purpose into your practice by moving the ball one way or another. Enough practice and you will be able to amaze yourself on the course – just like Bubba amazed millions of us watching him win the 2012 Mas-ters with a miraculous shot preceded by plenty of practice!.

From a sand wedge 60 yards away to a 4-iron recovery shot through the trees back into play, the punch

shot is a shot that takes practice. Let’s talk about the recovery shot fi rst. One thing that I have learned by watching the 15 to 30 handicappers is that when you are in trouble, the fi rst rule is to get out of trouble. So grab your 4- or 5-iron and head to the practice facility. As we know, the most important part of hitting a punch shot is to catch the ball fi rst. By putting the ball one ball right of the center of your stance, we can hit down on the ball, keeping it low and ensuring that we do not catch any thick grass, twigs, pine straw or sand before we strike the ball. If you are able to put and keep some extra weight at address on the left leg, that would be even better. Hands forward? Sure, just make sure the weight stays on the left and the hands stay in front of the club head. Let’s try not to get “scoopy.” I know it is natural to try to lift the ball, but as Jim McLean says, “it’s a death move!” So make sure your hands are forward, your weight forward and the ball is one ball right of center. Now, as I teach in all of my full-swing lessons, the shoulder rotation takes care of the rest. After the setup has been accomplished, your rotation away should allow the golf club to be picked up abruptly without setting your hands. Just turn back and through and the club

will return to the ball with a downward blow. Remember; try not to help by scooping. If you do, you will have the same shot just 10 feet from where you just tried the last one. Okay, punch wedges. Try using this method with a sand or pitching wedge. Let’s try it with a sand wedge fi rst. To recap, we will be trying this from any yardage you want. Let’s begin with 70 yards. Okay, same setup as the 4-iron recovery shot -- weight forward, hands forward and ball one ball right of center. Take a ¾ swing with very little hand action. If successful, notice how the ball takes two hops and then stops. If this happens, you have accomplished something very special. With the same move, you can move this ball position to the center and have the ball fl y slightly shorter and higher with one hop and a stop. Move it two balls back of center and have the ball hop twice and release slightly. Remember, if you are helping the ball with a little “early release” success may not be immediate. Okay, now let’s talk about what shot to hit when. Well, maybe we will save that for our lesson!

Balance is the key to success in a golf swing. Most golfers stand out of balance when at address. When they

go to make a golf swing, their body fi ghts the action and end up looking stiff or rigid. When you are stiff or rigid, you can’t build up the speed for distance or control for consistency. There is also an early fatigue, and even in some cases, injuries may occur. Making a golfer feel balance is not that diffi cult. See the illustration of the golfer in the photo, standing on two air discs at address, making a backswing and still keeping his balance. You know you’re out of balance when you can’t hold your fi nish to the count of three. You know you’re out of balance

when you take a step immediately after your golf swing impact position. You know you’re out of balance when after you hit the ball, you’re walking backwards. Here is a quick way to feel balance. Get two big bath towels. Fold each over one of time so you can stand on the towels individually, one under each foot. It is recommended that the towels be about 4 inches in fi tness from the fl oor to your foot so you will feel any in-balance motion. Place the towels down about the width of your stance. Now stand on the towels and take a golf set up position. Feel your address position. Let your weight rock you to the front of your feet, then to the back of your feet. Rock too much to the left and too much to the right until you fi nd your center mass balance. From this point, make a backswing and count to three. See if you can maintain a full backswing in balance. It is advised not to swing forward while standing on the towels without guidance of your coach or instructor. Being able to learn to feel your balance at address and the top of the backswing should increase your awareness of your balance and balance points, therefore im-proving your timing and tempo, improving distance and accuracy.
