Adam Scott Welcome

➤ Welcome to the Valais

Valais is a special place. A place where the diffe-

rent seasons bring different pleasures. There is no

shortage of things to do – hiking, skiing, tasting the

wine, or enjoying a great restaurant.

And of course, golf. Valais has many fine courses to

choose from. My own little part of Valais is at Crans-

sur-Sierre. To my mind, the view from the 7th tee is

probably the most spectacular view in the world of

golf. You just have to see it to believe it. It’s like play-

ing a round of golf on top of the world! I travel all over

the world and have been fortunate to go to many great

places. For all that, there is something special about

being able to come back to Crans-Montana and I never

leave disappointed. In fact the only thing that is dif-

ficult is leaving.

Come and join me and experience Valais. You’ll love it!

➤ Golf Club Source du Rhône, Obergoms: nice and long

A wood or perhaps a long iron? Whatever you choose, one thing is for certain: on this course, relatively flat and ex-

tensive given its high Alpine location and featuring narrow fairways where precise play is an advantage, every stroke

is a pleasure. Near the source of the Rhone, in a sun-kissed high valley surrounded by the unspoilt landscape of Upper

Valais, the serenity needed for a good game comes naturally. No doubt this is partly because the course is particularly

quiet, but also because of the natural beauty of one of Switzerland’s longest nine-hole courses: the diverse biotopes,

dense reeds and undulating greens are delightfully challenging, which lends a great deal of variety to the game – as

perhaps even the horned onlookers will appreciate. For a final highlight, the clubhouse serves regional delicacies.

➤ Golf Club Riederalp: any swing goes

Take the cable car to the golf course! Just park your vehicle in Mörel in the Rhone valley, get into the large cabin and in a

few minutes you will be up in the tranquil, car-free village of Riederalp. Just a few steps away from the mountain station,

a friendly atmosphere awaits golfers of all levels at the Golf Club Riederalp. “Golf for everyone” is the club motto, which

is pleasingly borne out by the numerous beginners’ proficiency courses and moderate prices. That is not to say that the

course is unchallenging. The idyllic, park-like course with a remarkably fine fairway for such a high altitude holds plenty

of surprises: for example, the fourth hole features an island green and a few bunkers and stone pine woods that make

it hard to shoot straight for the green. So you will have plenty to talk about at the 19th hole on the panoramic terrace

of the comfortable golf restaurant.

➤ Golf Club Matterhorn, Zermatt: bask in the glory of the famous mountain

At the foot of probably the most photographed mountain in Europe, in the valley between Täsch and Randa, the Golf

Club Matterhorn has run a well-tended nine-hole course since 2004. The double round with a view of the Klein Matter-

horn and the Breithorn is a must for golfing fans of Zermatt or golf enthusiasts looking to combine a trip to the glamor-

ous Alpine destination of Zermatt with a round of golf. Although the course is technically demanding, thanks to the flat

terrain it is not too exhausting. So you will have plenty of energy left for all the tourist attractions, culture and cuisine.

What is more, the golf club has plenty of ideas to ward off its many competitors, including early bird offers, night golf

and bring-a-friend promotions. If that still isn’t enough, you can enter the Matterhorn Eagle Cup in August and swing

your clubs in an Alpine meadow by the Gornergrat.

➤ Golf Club Leuk, Susten: a links course in Valais style

The word “links” usually refers to courses inspired by the original, uneven coastal courses in Scotland. So what happens

if a Scot designs a golf course in the Valais? 18 challenging holes in the heart of a wine-growing area, surrounded by

Alpine peaks! The architect John Chilver-Stainer was clearly inspired by his homeland when designing the course, which

opened in 2002. As if undulating greens, well-placed bunkers and hard soil were not enough, a constant wind affects

the trajectory of the ball – another typical feature of links courses. The ball flies steeply upwards, then rolls and rolls.

Even so, the wonderful view of the surrounding Valais landscape puts you in a gentle mood. Later, as you enjoy a glass

of Valais wine in the clubhouse, you will already be looking forward to your next round on this near-natural course and

eagerly refining your game strategy.

➤ Golf Club Sierre/Siders: where tigers and rabbits watch birdies

What are tigers and rabbits (seasoned players and beginners) looking for as they tee off on this wonderful course, also

rightly described as a nature reserve? A good game or a good catch? Perhaps both, because the course bordering on

the Pouta Fontana nature reserve and the lake of La Brèche has plenty of water hazards. To avoid fishing for balls and

disturbing the trout that frolic in the ponds, it is tempting to play around them. However, old trees often line the far

side of the well-tended fairway, which is a real challenge for golfers who tend to slice. But it would be a shame to con-

centrate entirely on the game here. This is an enchanting course with a huge variety of plants and wildlife, a 55-hectare

site surrounded by Alpine scenery that never ceases to amaze: an ecological paradise for all.

Bordered by the Rhone to the north and the Bois de la Borgne to the east, the terrain is dotted with fruit trees and

hazards in the form of small natural ponds. The fairways are soft and very well maintained, while the roughs and greens

are straight and fast. The course offers a sophisticated mixture of tactical and technical challenges, with much to inter-

est seasoned players and beginners alike. Blending perfectly with its rural surroundings, the Sion golf course is worth

It is hard to say which is more breathtaking: the fantastic view of the Mont Blanc and Combins massif or the undulat-

themselves wheezing here, but there is no need for concern. There are comfortable golf carts available, which are

well worth using so you can concentrate on the challenges of the beautifully situated course. The second course, Les

Moulins, is a classic pitch and putt course with 18 par-3 holes, where even beginners with no handicap can perfect their

technique in short play. But it is not just the golf courses that make Verbier an attractive destination worth spending a

few more days in. The hotel+spa+golf offers including all-round pampering packages are highly recommended.
