As far back as 1774, John Murray, Earl of Dunmore,

and King James’s appointed Head of the Virginia Colonies,

was practicing his golf game on the grounds of the Governor’s

Palace here in Williamsburg. And even earlier, various items

of golfing equipment were found listed in the estates

of 17th-century coastal Virginia planters.

We are sure those early Colonial golfers would be proud

of the game being played in America’s Historic Triangle today.

With 14 award-winning courses, the Williamsburg

Area has been named one of the “Top 25 Golf

Destinations in the World.”

Some of the greatest names in golf course design have

left their mark here in Williamsburg. Robert Trent Jones Sr.,

Arnold Palmer, Pete Dye, Mike Strantz, and

Nicklaus Design Associates have earned our courses

various “Top 10” awards over the years.

BLACKHEATH COURSEFord’s Colony’s most picturesque course, Blackheath,presents many challenges to golfers of all abilities. Watercomes into play on 13 holes, a total of 9 doglegs andbunkers guarding every green, and typically howlingprevailing winds make this course play a lot longer thanits 6,621 yards.

GOVERNOR SPOTSWOODCOURSE

First designed and built in 1947 for guests of theWilliamsburg Inn, the Governor Spotswood Course waslater updated by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. and opened forpublic play in 1963.

With six par 3s, two par 4s, and a long par 5, this 9-holecourse is a golfer’s delight for either walking or riding.

WILLIAMSBURG NATIONALThe area’s latest golf challenge opened in 2007as Williamsburg National added its second 18-holechampionship course, the Yorktown, to the Club’s existingJamestown Course.

The settlers of America’s Historic Triangle found greatbeauty and faced noble challenges in nearby Jamestown andYorktown. At Williamsburg National, those two historicsites have been honored with the existingNicklaus designedJamestown Course, and now the new Yorktown Coursedesigned by Tom Clark. Both courses offer their own “greatbeauty” and “noble challenges” as today’s golfers enjoy thegame on these award-winning courses at the WilliamsburgNational Golf Club.

Located near the James River just up from Jamestown andminutes from the heart of Colonial Williamsburg’s HistoricArea, Williamsburg National is a favorite for golfers of allskill levels. The Jamestown Course has served as host to thePGA Tour Michelob Open Qualifier on three occasions,and has received numerous awards including “One ofthe Ten Best Courses You Can Play in Virginia” by GolfMagazine. Designed by renowned architect Tom Clark, theYorktown is a 7,000 yard championship course. Whenasked to comment on his design, Tom Clark said, “It is acourse of traditional design and with no gimmicks.”However, two of the last three holes measure over600 yards.
