ach winter, as snowbound golf nuts throughout the world frustratingly puttthe carpet ragged and knock knocked-up balls into makeshift basement

nets, fairy tale television images from the yearly AT&T Pebble Beach Pro

Am golf tournament start hackers salivating with Pavlov-like certainty, anticipat-

ing the possibility of someday descending upon this magnificent meeting of

land and sea to trundle their way around the areas golfing gems.

The very fortunate few with connections to members at pantheons like

Cypress Point, Monterey Peninsula Country Club and the more recently sculpted

Tehama and The Preserve, Gulfstream to the Peninsula to dabble in the ancient

game in these hallowed grounds. Even the very privileged must surely breathe

a little more hyperactively standing on the first tee box at Cypress, where

legendary golfer Bobby Jones was so inspired by golf course architect Alister

MacKenzie as to commission him to build Augusta Nationala little place where

he envisioned, someday, inviting the greatest players for a special tournament. The Monterey Peninsula is where the golf-smitten dream of playing. Here

is where they flock, to the area perennially placed at permanent number one

among golfing destinations by all the major and minor golf publications, as well

as all important golf personalities throughout the world.

The Peninsula is blessed with an almost magical geographical beauty. Its

weather, moderate with dashes of fog, wind, cold and rain, sometimes reflects

golfing conditions found in the games homeland, Scotland. Occasional pierc-

ing horizontal rain driven by 30mph gusts of near-frigid wind along the Pacifics

mighty shores does more to foster nobility in a golf purist than ultra-comfortable

warm-weather resort-style golf found throughout much of the American golfing

landscape. Yet, during the temperate summer and fall months, shirtsleeves are

more the rule, but not without the ever-present joy of a touch of the old wind

after all, as the Scots are wont to say: If theres nay wind, theres nay golf.Fortunately for all, the Peninsula offers folks of all means, skill level and incli-

nation unique and wonderful tests of their golfing mettle. The highly skilled may

match their games against Spyglass Hill, Poppy Hills and the newly renovated

powerhouses Bayonet and Blackhorse. Looking for a straightforward, honest

test of golf without getting beat up? Old Del Monte, oldest course west of the

Mississippi, awaits, along with the dual courses at Rancho Caada. Want a

taste of Pebble Beach ocean-links style without the price tag? Pacific Grove Golf

Links, designed by Jack Neville, who also designed Pebble Beach, boasts a back

nine along dunes and ocean with views that will leave you breathless.

Tracks like Quail Lodge, Carmel Valley Ranch and Laguna Seca are all fun,

fair and frisky tests for your golf game. The Links at Spanish Bay offers target

golf combined with oceanside-links style and million-dollar panoramas, plus a

great nineteenth hole in Sticks, its sports-themed restaurant and bar overlook-ing the first fairway.

Oh yes, theres also that other little 18-hole wonder, the incomparable Pebble

Beach. Sure the greens fees are high, but what price is fair for golfing nirvana?

What is the true value of walking along the pathways blazed by Hogan, Snead,

Watson, Nicklaus, Palmer and Woods, not to mention Jack Lemon, Bob Hope,

Bing Crosby and enough major and minor celebrities to start your own studio?

Its telling that most serious golfers, were they left with but one more round

before they die, would choose Pebble Beach.

public coursesThe Monterey Peninsula is synonymous with world-

class golfing, but you dont have to be a pro or

obsessed with your handicap to enjoy the areas

superb golf links. There are numerous courses to

choose from that are well-suited to all levels of play.

    BayoneT andBlack horse

Set amid the fragrant chaparral of old Fort

Ord, these two courses offer challenges for all

skill levels. Bayonet, a PGA tour qualification

course whose front nine just received a gor-

geous remodel, is the tougher of the two, with

tight doglegs and tricky elevated greens. Black

Horse offers more scenic views and is gener-

ally more open, with live oaks surrounding the

fairways instead of those daunting Cypress

trees. Bayonet: 7094 yards, slope 139. Black

Horse: 7009 yards, slope 135. Designed by

Gen. Glen McClure and Robert Trent Jones,

Jr. Restaurant, driving range. 1 McClure Way,

    Seaside, 899-7271.

del MonTe Golf courseThe Peninsula is home to a rich golfing

tradition, and this is where it all started back

in 1897. Old Del Monte may also have been

the first in the world to feature green fairways

year-round. A pretty course, and more forgiving

than most. 6365 yards, slope 127. Designed by

Charles Maud. Full-service restaurant and bar.

    1300 Sylvan Rd., Monterey, 373-2700.

    laGuna secaGolf ranch

A challenging course noted for its majestic

oaks, numerous bunkers and elevated tees. Its

    generous inland microclimate inspires locals

to call it The Sunshine Course. Robert Trent

Jones Jr. and Sr. teamed up to design Laguna

Seca. 6157 yards, slope 127. Restaurant (break-

fast and lunch), natural grass practice facility.

    10520 York Rd., off Highway 68, Monterey,373-3701.

links aT spanish BayNestled among impressive sand dunes near

Asilomar State Beach, the Links are patterned

after an authentic Scottish course. You can

almost hear the bagpipes, says golf great

Tom Watson, who helped design the course.

Patches of endangered dunes vegetation have

been carefully nurtured and are off limits.

Local rules allow for a free drop for any ball hit

into them. The northwest coastal winds can

play havoc with your drives, and watch out for

that treacherous ice plant. 6821 yards, slope

    146. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., Tom

Watson, and Frank Sandy Tatum. Full-service

Located next to the Monterey County

Fairgrounds, the Monterey Pines features nar-

row fairways, an abundance of trees, four small

lakes and affordable greens fees. Locals refer

to this one-time military course simply as the

Navy Course. Great for beginners, and afford

able too. 5629 yards, slope 114. Driving range

Garden Road and Fairgrounds Road, Monterey

    pacific Grove Golflinks

Local golf patriarch Sam Morse sold thi

spectacular hunk of real estate for close t

nothing, strongly suggesting they develop a go

course on it. Pacific Grove followed Morse

advice, and the result is a great public course
