MIZEN PARTNERSHIP LAUNCH A partnership aiming to secure development, investment and expansion in West Cork is to be launched today Thursday, April 16th in Mizen Head Signal Station Visitor Centre at 11 am.
The new Mizen Community Partnership will also release the Integrated Strategic Local Development Plan for the Mizen Peninsula, and is calling on those concerned for the community’s future to attend.
Commissioned by West Cork Development Partnership, the report identifies three areas — Brand, Food, and Heritage — to be developed across the three Mizen Community Councils: Goleen, Schull and Ballydehob.
It is hoped the Partnership will develop the Mizen Peninsula brand, encourage the expansion of local food producers, and prioritise the area’s historical heritage.
Mr Ian Dempsey, CEO West Cork Development Partnership, will launch the initiative at the event, set to be attended by members of the tourist industry, government agencies, local businesses and entrepreneurs.
“We are looking forward to this exciting event and hope that this initiative will have a great impact on the lives of the many people who call Mizen Peninsula their home and workplace.
COMMUNITY COUNCIL AGM Goleen & District Community Council held its AGM at Goleen Community Centre on Monday night last. There were many issues discussed at the AGM as a full Secretary's report by Owen Kelly was read out, as were the Treasurer's report by Denis O Neill and Chairman's report.
The Community Council has had another remarkably successful year with the Social Centre now having an added day with a meals on wheels service added, The fact is now that the Community Council in Goleen has worked with Schull Community Care, together we are able to provide a five day week service to those who need it in the Community.
The Pride of Place competition saw the success of community co-operation here in Goleen and this is why we were rated so high in the competition last year, We have a great working relationship with local organisations, GAA, Soccer club, Table Tennis club, Foróige, just to mention a few.
The purchase of a community bus was another forward move and something the Community Council wanted to do for some time.
Another achievement is the setting-up of the Mizen Partnership in which Goleen & District Community Council are playing an active part and also the setting-up of the Three Heads of West Cork Association, another organisation set up to promote Tourism in West Cork. (cont inside)

(Cont from front page) Providing 16 jobs in the Community is a great achievement in itself and the Community Council has each of these workers fully committed to their jobs.
Again the Community Council enabled the Green Flags for Galleycove and Ballyrisode beaches and helped out in getting a Blue Flag for Barleycove Beach.
The Community Council is in the process of erecting two sculptures in the parish. We are also working on a new website. The Community Council was delighted to propose James Kelly for the Garda Youth Award, which he later won - again a great achievement for all.
The Festival Committee ran a great Festival last year and plans are already in place for this year. The international plan with Finland has been completed in the past 12 months and the relationship with the Finns is as strong as ever; a number of them will visit Goleen in the weeks ahead.
Michael Collins, Chairman of Goleen & District Community Council, thanked all for coming and for their great support in the past year. He said there were many cogs in the Community Council machine. There are huge costs attached as, for instance, workers have to be supplied with fuel to strim eight graveyards, which are owned by both the Council and the Church; that is money that cannot be recouped in any way and is paid for by the local community LOTTO, which is greatly supported by you, the public. Our grateful thanks for your generosity. With an expenditure in the past 12 months of €144,021, it shows that this Community Voluntary organisation is carrying out huge works for the community. Mizen Set Dancers - Our set dancers were on the road again and this time the event was The Millstreet Feile Cheoil held in Millstreet Community School on Sunday last April 12th. The girls were again dancing in the U-12 category. They were first to dance in their section and looked at ease and confident. The standard was high on the day but the girls earned a joint 3rd placing with Dunmanway. Cullen were the winners with Millstreet coming 2nd. Well done girls and keep up the good work. Mary Sheehan We were recently reminded of this rhyme heralding the arrival of the cuckoo & summer
In April, Come she will. In May, She sings all day.
In June, She changes her tune. In July, She prepares to fly.
In August, Go she must.

Mizen Rovers U14 Football - The U14 footballers, under the guidance of Coach John Cullinane, had their first league fixture of the 2015 season on Thursday last, with the boys from Castletownbere coming to Goleen. It was the perfect evening for a good game of football & they didn't disappoint. This particular panel, with no game conceded heading into their third season, gave an outstanding display of football, probably some of the best football we have seen them play. As one supporter said " what a team & they are a team, no one superstar, all stars". From the throw in, it was straight into scoring mode, with Matthew (2-0) at half forward raising the green flag in the first 2 minutes. It was obvious, from early on, that Mizen were the stronger outfit but, with the Beara reputation for strong football, you just never know until the final whistle blows! The scores kept coming, with young Michael O Driscoll (3-01) at full forward raising 2 green flags & a white in the first half. The forwards kept pushing, with Michael Sheehan (0-09) & Michael O’Reilly (1-05) picking off the scores with great accuracy. It always looks impressive, when relaying the details of a match, what a player scored & rightly so but, as a team, I know, the forwards give great credit & respect to their team mates; Patrick, Jake (0-01),Tadgh, Jack , Aaron (0-01) & Adam who always stand firm in defence. There were many contenders for MOTM with an all round great team performance but, on this occasion, it goes to Patrick
Sheehan. Patrick, who still plays at U12, gave an outstanding display of defensive football, cleaning up everything that came his way, sending some great ball into the forwards & creating great scores. At the half time whistle it was 3-07 to 1-01. The Beara backs were in all sorts of bother in the second half with Mizen keeping the umpires busy raising flag after flag. Fresh legs were required & on came young Finnian O Driscoll (2-0), still playing at U12 level. Not long on the field he raised a green flag & soon after another. Jimmy O'Regan (0-01) at full forward, who has never once missed a training session, passed off some nice balls to his team mates, with even a nice flick of the boot to Michael Sheehan raising a white flag. All in all a great team performance by a great bunch of lads! Final score: Mizen 8-18 CTB 3-02 Team: Adam Sheehan, Tadgh Reidy, Patrick Sheehan, Aaron O’Driscoll, Jack O Driscoll, Jake Coughlan, Michael O’Reilly, Matthew Sheehan, Michael Sheehan, Jimmy O’Regan, Michael O’Driscoll & Finnian O’Driscoll.
