Director’s Corner for January – February 2014 Hello Chapter G. Our spring weather arrived early and beautiful riding weather is here. However, it was a cool morning when we celebrated the New Year with a ride to Sierra Vista. A large group of like minded “Goldwingers” enjoyed breakfast, fun and camaraderie at the Landmark Café. A good time was had by all.

In January we rode to Tucson Chapter A to rescued Gizmo, then visited Chapter E February 1st where we kidnapped “Elvis”. We took him along on our ride to Tombstone. He got out of hand, tried to commander a stage coach, and had to be taken into custody. He is now in the care of “Mascot Sheriff Linda Johnson” until his rescue.

At our meeting Saturday, February 8th, Bill and Anita Nicholls were honored as Chapter G’s Couple of the Year. We are proud to have them as members of Chapter G and appreciate their participation as staff, as well as being involved in activities and can be depended upon to always volunteer to help.

We had a beautiful day for our ride to the Buenos Aries National Wildlife Area, stopping to enjoy refreshments at Gadsden’s after our hike. It has been awhile since we traveled this road or visited Gadsden’s. Many from Chapter G attended the ARC class in January; several others attended the MFA class in February. I know a couple more are planning to attend the TRC class March 8th. The Gecko’s can be commended for their participation in the Educational/Safety Programs. I am very proud of our group, and I’m sure Carl is also. A large percentage of Chapter G members are Master Riders. Even Gitzy attended the ARC class with Steve Eddington and now has a co-rider certificate. Gitzy’s letters of her exciting activities with both Linda & Wally Johnson and Steve & Michelle Eddington are included in this Newsletter.

Another ride is planned for February 15th through the Soccoro National Park. February 22 Chapter G will visit Chapter K in Tucson. March 1st is our own Fund Raiser…. “Ride the Horns”. We hope all will attend and enjoy the activities, games, prizes and food. We even have a live DJ playing 50’s, 60’s and 70’s music. There may even be room to wiggle your hips or do a jig. Upcoming is Chapter A’s Fund Raiser, March 15th Burger Bash. A group ride is planned for this, as well as Chapter G’s “Bowling for Fun” for March 22nd. 40 to Phoenix is scheduled for March 12th & 13th. April 11th Dennie Long has put together a ride for Chapter G to visit Chapter TX-1A in El Paso, Texas. May 23 -26 will bring our Region F Convention, again planned for St. George, Utah. GWRRA is difficult, GWRRA Members are likely to be independent thinkers, fun-

loving, generous, adventuresome, cooperative and unfazed by the natural challenges

of riding in the rain, temperature extremes or highway uncertainties. Many Members

have completed CPR and first aid training, making them the best-prepared

• M.A .D. or Motorist Awareness Division is an extension of the Rider Education

Program; however, M.A.D. focuses on educating the motorist community to protect you.

Chapter Stores:

If you are looking for a new shirt or some other gear to stand out at meetings, conventions or just rides, take a look at what chapter stores has to offer. Most things can be ordered and received in 2-3 weeks. Take a look at my table at the meetings or ask me for an order blank to see what’s available. I am wondering how many would be interested in a lighter weight short-sleeved polo shirt for the warmer weather. Give it some thought and I will be asking at our monthly meeting to see how many are interested and if you are not there, just send me an email with your opinion. They would probably cost about $40 after having our logo put on. If you have ideas on things to be available at the store, just let me know and I will check into it. Don’t forget to order early if you want something for your trip to Wing Ding this summer in Madison, WI. Ed Note: Sorry we don’t accept bit coins yet.

History of the Mascot “Stealing”.

Indian tribes at Canyon De Chelly, AZ, played a game very similar to our “Steal the Mascot”. Their game promoted visiting other tribes and making new friends, finding new girl friend and even promoted trade between the tribes. Way back then, Each year the young boys (as young as 12 years old), in the tribe were selected to raid a neighboring Indian tribe. The intention was to steal the Chief’s daughter! So, the young braves would mount their horses late at night and ride to the other tribe’s encampment and quietly steal the Chief’s daughter out of her Tepee and take her back to their tribe. There was always a big celebration for the success of the young braves, (now men) capturing the Chief’s daughter. The next day a messenger would be sent back to her father’s tribe to let him know that his daughter was safe and that now a ransom was required in order to get her back!

Usually the ransom was for a sheep, a couple of chickens or sometimes a cow. Imagine that! Then ransom would be paid and the daughter would be returned unharmed. This happened each year as the young boys came of age. This was considered to be their test of manhood.

Our purpose, like the Indians before us is to have a lot of fun with this. While we don’t steal the Chief’s daughter any more, each Chapter now has a mascot… just begging to be stolen. This is a really fun activity that promotes getting involved with your Chapter, bonding friendships and really getting more people involved with the activities of the Chapters. You will also meet folks from all the other Chapters around the District. And let’s not forget about the rides. That’s what it’s all about.

GITZY’S LIFE:

On 11 January I went to live with Steve and Michele for a month. My time with them has been during a Winter month but for us in Green Valley that means a busy time with lots of visitors here avoiding cold snowy weather back home. The E's home in Corona de Tucson is at 3850 feet elevation which means the sun from the East hits there first in the morning and gets blocked first in the evening. My first ride was with Steve on Wednesday to a men's group meeting. We were up and gone at 5:30 am, in the dark and mid 30 degree temp. Nice group but men's stuff so I waited in the trunk. A ride to breakfast after that and a visit with his Mom to run some errands followed. We did that each Wednesday. On the 18th we attended the AZ-A meeting and then in the afternoon I went to my first Christian Motorcyclist Association (CMA) meeting. Lots of people I hadn't seen before and a lot of them have loud bikes. Not sure I liked that.

On the 25th I attended the Advanced Rider Course as a co-rider. Several of my AZ-G and AZ-A friends were there so I felt relaxed and did well. I GOT MY ARC CARD!. The next morning we were up early and rode to the Oro Valley Church of the Nazarene for something called a "church visit". We parked motorcycles around the entrance to the church and set up an information table. I enjoyed a donut and coffee as we talked to people before the early service. In each service one of my new CMA friends talked about their activities around the world. Did

you know there are about 120 thousand CMA'ers in 30 countries ? We did something called Bike Blessings between and after services. Counting me there were 31 of us there. Of course, we went out to eat after. Tuesday the 28th at 7 pm we went to the Gospel Rescue Mission men's shelter to talk to the guys, sing some hymns and listen to my friend Erv encourage them. Those guys have it rough but they are warm and fed in the mission. Too bad

there isn't room for everyone. Sometimes they have to find a trunk outside to sleep in. On 1 Feb I went up to Phoenix with Steve to a CMA state leaders meeting. More loud bikes but they were in the parking lot. They talked about all kinds of things happening in 2014. Very interesting stuff. It was an interesting month full of different and new experiences for me. Steve uses the Goldwing, and that other noisy Buell thing, most of the time so we rode a lot to include helping to plan the AZ-G Ride the Horns event coming up on 1 March. I worked hard on that so I hope you all come ... and bring friends. Steve took me over to Dee on Tuesday, Feb 4th cause they had family coming and would be in Phoenix and miss the February meeting. /s/ GITSY

Chapter G GLOBE-trotting Sunday January 12th

, 2014

globe·trot·ter noun …a person who travels regularly or frequently to

countries all over the world.

Well I don’t think we travelled the globe yesterday but we did ride to Globe Arizona for lunch.

Chapter G headed out from Green Valley with 6 bikes at 9:15am from the Safeway parking lot

on Duvall Mine road. Made a stop at Fry’s (south side of Tucson) to pick up Chuck, Kris

Liberty along with Linda and Wally Johnson. Linda was gracious enough to buy some ‘trail

mix’ so we could get a jump start to our ride to Globe. Thanks Linda! At this point we had 8

bikes so we split into 2 groups, led by Chuck (tail gunner Bill Nichols) and Dennie (tail gunner

Wally Johnson).

Our route took us up to Twin Peaks, then Tangerine over to Oracle, then up hwy 77. The

weather was great. I don’t think it got over 72 degrees all day even though everyone wore their

proper riding gear.

As we were heading east on Tangerine road, we passed another Goldwing couple who started to

converse with someone in the second group (not sure who that was). They made a “U” turn and

joined us. Now we have 9 bikes altogether. Chuck planned a “short” break at Mammoth and

found a nice parking lot at the Dollar General store for all of us to get into. The couple (Frankie

& Shirley) that joined us was from Chapter K (snowbirds) from Michigan. Wanted to know

where we were going. Told them that we were heading to Globe for lunch and they were

welcomed to join us. They said, “Sure why not as they had planned to do a long ride but didn’t

know where”. This made their day.

After we had our short break in Mammoth and as we were just leaving, a white Goldwing

passed us. Chuck inquired who it was and it was Dennis Ammons from chapter A! Nice

surprise. Chuck informed him that we were headed towards Globe for lunch.

We continued our route on hwy 77 in Winkelman, viewing the beautiful scenery in the valley as

we started climb in elevation. At one spot we were traveling along the Gila River (awesome). I

thought maybe the temperature dropped a bit as we climbed higher elevation but was still

comfortable to my built in thermometer (Karen). Eventually we made our way to hwy 70, east

of Globe. Next stop was lunch at Judy’ Cook House. Nice friendly place to stop and have some

food. At his point I had registered 147 miles from Green Valley.

It’s now around 2:30pm and we are going to head west to pick 79, towards Florence. Eventually

we stopped at the Tom Mix memorial for some picture taking as some of the riders are doing

the TOUR ARIZONA sponsored by Bill Trask (Chapter R). After picture taking was done, we

headed out towards Tucson. Along the way Dennis Ammons made reference to another

highway that cuts over to interstate 10. The name is “East Park Link Drive”. Very nice

motorcycle road with a lot of curves . So if you want to ride a NEW road coming from

Florence, take this one. You won’t be disappointed.

As day comes to an end, so does the ride. With enjoyable ‘company’ riding along, I think

everyone was glad to get back home. I know I was, so much as I fell asleep on the couch trying

to watch TV. Ride safe until the next ride.
