2019 Year in Review 2019 marked the end of a decade and the passing of 2-1/2 decades that GRRR has worked hard to help Golden

Retrievers in need. GRRR is a very different organization today than it was when first created back in 1996. From the early days with Mary Kenton and a few other hardy volunteers pinching pennies and operating out of a storage trailer on the grounds of Sage Valley Kennels, we’ve grown into today’s well-run operation at Phoebe’s Place.

What hasn’t changed is the adherence to our mission statement and the commitment of our staff, volunteers, and members. And even though we no longer live hand-to-mouth, fiscal prudence and sustainability are the most important goals of your Board of Directors. Our members have entrusted us with maintaining GRRR for the benefit of the thousands of Goldens who have been in our care and the thousands more to come in the future.

In 2019, 272 dogs came through our doors. Of that number, 63 were former breeding dogs we rescued from uncertain futures and placed in loving, forever homes. Some required extensive physical or emotional care prior to placement, but our volunteers pitched in to give every dog what they needed. We purchased a large, air-conditioned van to be able to transport more dogs, even during the hot summers.

This year also marked a significant staff transition, as Kevin Shipley retired and Francie Rakiec was promoted from Development Director and became our second fulltime Executive Director. By all accounts, she and Director of Animal Care Mary Kenton have developed a smooth working relationship, and the Board is confident the organization is in good hands.

The 2019 Gala, featuring author David Rosenfelt, was a huge success. He had the audience in stitches describing the cross-country move of his dog rescue organization, and mystery novels featuring Golden Retrievers. And significantly, the event raised nearly $140,000. And heads up: the 2020 Gala date has moved to July 18, and will feature a Summer Olympics theme to celebrate GRRR’s “Gold Medal Athletes”.

Our eighth year participating in Colorado Gives Day was also a huge financial success for GRRR. We earned nearly $135,000 from 414 separate donations. It’s always heartwarming to see how many people care about GRRR. It’s not just a few large donations that support us.

And of course, there are many smaller fundraising opportunities throughout the year from online Valentines Day, Spring Fling, and Halloween-themed campaigns to merchandise sales at our member and community events. These, along with donations from members, major donors and grantors help us stay true to our mission, and provide whatever help our dogs may need.

We co-sponsored a fun community event with the City of Golden celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Golden Retriever. An estimated 1,000 Goldens showed up, with even more adoring humans at their sides.

In 2020, GRRR will continue providing care for relinquished dogs, those brought over from Turkey and those rescued from difficult breeding situations. In order to provide the best possible care, we also plan to develop a volunteer training program for assisting any “shy” dogs, regardless of where they came from. We are also working on a program to preserve GRRR’s institutional memory, assuring we have the means to pass along the work of Board members, staff and volunteers to those who will serve GRRR in the future.
