The World’s end MarkeT

old Meets new

This buzzy 1930s-style digs is a venue that incorporates its rich history and heritage into its appearance and modernised style. You’ll find it sitting pretty on Chelsea’s King’s Road, serving up classic British food using market-fresh delicacies of the highest order. Spread over three floors, The World’s End Market not only boasts a restaurant on the ground floor, but an underground cocktail bar in the basement and is complete with a terrace and bar area on the first floor. Freshly caught seafood stakes its claim on the menu, with main courses including lobster, oysters and cuttlefish – and for those red-meat fiends, a choice of sirloin, T-Bone or a melt-in-the-mouth fillet you simply won’t be able to resist. Wait! There’s more. The puddings are utterly glorious in every sense of the word. Chocolate fondant, hazelnut and caramel cheesecake or carrot and orange cake – take your pick. For no-fuss food with flavours that will tease your taste buds, it’s a must try. 459 king ’s road, london sW10 0lr

Chez ChoW

It’s The dogs

The owners of Mayfair’s popular restaurant North Audley Cantine (NAC) have transformed the basement of their building into a quirky, yet laidback, local hangout, which is set to launch on 12th February. The French trio behind Chez Chow took inspiration from Head Chef and part-owner, Jeremy Coste’s pet dog: Teddy the Chow Chow. With the basement originally being Teddy’s hangout and storage place, you will find numerous knick-knacks, including vintage and antique treasures throughout this innovative bar. Paying homage to Teddy’s heritage, the bar boasts an Asian inspiration, featuring a bamboo dresser at the bar’s entrance. For a real treat, spoil yourself by ordering Teddy’s favourite – the Chow Asian pork belly sliders with kimchee (spicy and sour vegetables), pickled cucumber and crackling served on a brioche bun. Accompany this with a drink from the extensive cocktail list, featuring both classics and Asian-inspired drinks. To really engage in the comfort and friendliness of this bar, order a Popcorn Sazerac: (popcorn infused bourbon), served ‘on the rocks’, with a splash of agave syrup.

a Work of ar t

Taking you on a journey with his confronting and intriguing sculptures, Norwegian artist Hedi Xandt brings to life the dark side of beauty in his impressive new collection of sculptures. As a self-taught conceptual artist and professional graphic designer Xandt’s unique vision is dark yet vibrant – and it’s quite literally set in stone. This collection of Ancient Greek sculptures – influenced by both Norwegian fairytales and Greek legends – combine dark and light to incredible effect. Brutally altering classic marble-white Greek sculptures with gold-plated brass and a distressed black finish marble, Xandt has created ‘skullptures’ that warrant being displayed in leading museums and art galleries across the world over.

Hailing from Japan, the world’s most expensive beef has landed in London. Gourmands in search of something new should head to Sushisamba and tuck into the melt-in-the-mouth Kobe beef dishes – the restaurant’s monthly Kobe Week has just launched. Following the brokering of a deal with the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in Japan and the Kobe Beef Marketing and Distribution Promotion Association, Chef Claudio Cardoso has secured a supply of this rare, sweet lean meat – making it London’s first-ever Kobe Ishiyaki experience. The rich £1,000 Ishiyaki is the show-stealer – a 1kg of beef cooked over a sizzling hot stone alongside dipping sauces and pickled plums. Further treats are the Kobe tartare, which comes with poached egg, macadamia and gold; Kobe temari; rib-eye; beef nigiri sushi; salt and pepper squid; and tuna ceviche. Nothing disappoints. The Wagyu cattle are known for enjoying the most pampered of bovine existences: mineral water to drink, having their coats massaged, feeding them beer and sake and playing classical music to relax them, all to aid digestion and increase marbling, the characteristic that gives Kobe its trademark tenderness. Knock back sake and killer cocktails, and get pleasantly sozzled courtesy of Head Sommelier Maurizio Palomba while taking in the bright lights of the city. Word to the wise – ensure you come with an empty stomach.

We all know the impact that cold temperatures, polluted city streets and over-exposure to central heating can have on the skin, and it isn’t pretty. My long-suffering skin had been subjected to suchlike conditions for too long, and it was high time I treated it to a break and some well-deserved care and attention. Wanting to escape the frenetic streets of London, I visited the spa at Ascot’s beautiful Coworth Park, which is set in the midst of stunning English parkland. Nestled into the charming landscape, this sumptuous sanctuary provides the ideal retreat for world-weary skin. Affording breath-taking views from the upper floor, the spa promotes an idea of being at one with nature, with the sense of harmony reinforced by the crisp, light interior and large windows. Guests to the spa can expect to find a heated indoor swimming pool – complete with underwater music – a relaxation room, an aromatic steam room plus experience shower, a gym and The Spatisserie, which serves light meals, afternoon tea, wine and champagne.

I opted to experience the Essential Rose Facial, which I hoped would prove a miracle cure to all my skin woes. The treatment involved a thorough cleanse and exfoliation, followed by a relaxing scalp, hand and arm massage and an intensively hydrating mask, which – according to my therapist – was absorbed thirstily by my poor, neglected skin. The Aromatherapy Associates products used throughout the treatment filled the room with the natural scent of rose and helped to create an overwhelming sense of calm and tranquility. My skin responded well; looking in the mirror afterwards I found that my face felt firmer and more hydrated and appeared to be genuinely glowing and radiant. Additionally, the effects lasted well beyond that initial stage, with my skin exhibiting the visible benefits of that much-needed injection of moisture days later. So if you’re feeling the ill-effects of unsavoury weather and feel in the need for a little pick-me-up, be sure to visit Coworth Park’s spa – I promise you, your skin will thank you for it.
