Carol Myokei Himaka August 2018 I am a link in the Buddha’s golden chain of love that stretches around the world. I must keep my link bright and strong. I will try to be kind and gentle to every living thing and protect all who are weaker than myself. I will try to think pure and beautiful thoughts, to say pure and beautiful words, and to do pure and beautiful deeds, knowing that on what I do now depends not only my happiness or unhappiness, but also that of others. May every link in the Buddha’s golden chain of love become bright and strong, and may we all attain perfect peace. Tannisho - Chapter II Continuing our exploration of the Tannisho we find in Chapter II the record of an exchange between Shinran and a group of followers who have traveled far in order to ask him questions. In the first part the speaker, we assume to be Shinran, acknowledges that the followers have traveled far - "over more than ten provinces at the risk of their lives." We need to understand and appreciate that travel in the 11th century, especially by foot, was extremely dangerous, due to many things. Lawless thieves, rough paths and roads, all made travel a risk for these people. The speaker then acknowledges that the seekers are mistaken if they have come to find out if Shinran has special knowledge of scriptures that they may not be aware of. In answer to this question, Shinran advises that if that is what they seek they should look to the "eminent scholars in the monasteries of Nara and Mt. Hiei. Shinran then tells them that "As for myself, Shinran, I simply receive the words of my dear teacher, Honen, "Just say the nembutsu and be saved by Amida," and entrust myself to the Primal Vow. Besides this, there is nothing else." It seems hard to believe that Shinran would explain to these seekers that he has no special teaching that can lead followers to be born in the Pure Land. The simple admission of Shinran that he only receives the words of his teacher, Honen, and trusts the Primal Vow. The next paragraph tells us a most astonishing thing. Shinran reveals that he actually does "not know whether the nembutsu may be the cause for [his] birth in the Pure Land, or the act that shall condemn [him] to hell." This is an astounding admission from the "founder" of our religious tradition. He admits that he does not know the efficacy of nembutsu.

I am a link in the Buddha’s golden chain of love that stretches around the world.

Tannisho - Chapter II

Continuing our exploration of the Tannisho we find in Chapter II the record of an exchange

between Shinran and a group of followers who have traveled far in order to ask him questions.

In the first part the speaker, we assume to be Shinran, acknowledges that the followers have

traveled far - "over more than ten provinces at the risk of their lives." We need to understand and

appreciate that travel in the 11th century, especially by foot, was extremely dangerous, due to many

things. Lawless thieves, rough paths and roads, all made travel a risk for these people. The speaker then

acknowledges that the seekers are mistaken if they have come to find out if Shinran has special

knowledge of scriptures that they may not be aware of. In answer to this question, Shinran advises that if

that is what they seek they should look to the "eminent scholars in the monasteries of Nara and Mt. Hiei.

Shinran then tells them that "As for myself, Shinran, I simply receive the words of my dear

teacher, Honen, "Just say the nembutsu and be saved by Amida," and entrust myself to the Primal Vow.

Besides this, there is nothing else."

It seems hard to believe that Shinran would explain to these seekers that he has no special

teaching that can lead followers to be born in the Pure Land. The simple admission of Shinran that he

only receives the words of his teacher, Honen, and trusts the Primal Vow.

The next paragraph tells us a most astonishing thing. Shinran reveals that he actually does "not

know whether the nembutsu may be the cause for [his] birth in the Pure Land, or the act that shall

condemn [him] to hell." This is an astounding admission from the "founder" of our religious tradition.

He admits that he does not know the efficacy of nembutsu.

But he explains that he has "nothing to regret, even if I should have been deceived by my teacher, and,

saying the nembutsu, fall into hell."

His justification of such a statement comes from his knowing that even "if I was capable of

realizing Buddhahood by other religious practice and yet fell into hell for saying the nembutsu, I might

have dire regrets for having been deceived. But since I am absolutely incapable of any religious practice,

hell is my only home." In other words, Shinran tells us that his total reliance on nembutsu as taught by

Honen is that he fully understands that he is incapable of achieving Buddhahood on his own, through

practices he has been taught.

He concludes with a simple explanation based on logic.

If Amida's Primal Vow is true, Sakyamuni's teaching cannot be false. If the Buddha's teaching is true, Shan-tao's commentaries cannot be false. If Shan-tao's commentaries are true, how can Honen's words by empty? If Honen's words are true, what I, Shinran, say cannot be meaningless. In essence, such is the true entrusting of this foolish one. Now, whether you accept the nembutsu, entrusting yourself to it, or rejecting it, that is your own decision.

The value of this exposition lies in seeing that one cannot come to trust in the nembutsu through

rational reasoning. The amazing value of nembutsu is presented through a truthful understanding of

ourselves. We need to ask ourselves if we believe we are capable of achieving Buddhahood through

practices. Shinran tried for 20 years during his time as a monk on Mt. Hiei. He was almost driven to

spiritual despair until he heard the words of Honen, his teacher. But Honen did not argue philosophy

with his followers, he led them to ultimately admitting that they could not rely upon their own efforts, or

practices, to achieve Buddhahood. Once that is verified absolutely, without a doubt, one has a choice, to

either sink into despair or receive the bountiful benefits offered by the Amida Buddha. This is a choice

of the 'heart' not the head.
