OROVILLE - Gold Dig-ger Apples and its growers in Oroville and the surrounding communities are having a suc-cessful 2011, according to Gen-eral Manager Greg Moser. Each year the growers co-operative returns more than $24 million in local payroll and fruit sales back to the community, says Moser. And between those that work for the cooperative and its growers there are over 1000 employees in the local area. Although they have a few large growers, the company spe-cializes in the small grower and they like it that way, according to Moser. He says having small growers makes it possible to more customize the warehouse with the grower’s needs. “We just came through a successful cherry season and now we’re in the middle of har-vesting a bumper crop of pears and it looks like we have a good apple crop that will be follow-ing,” said Moser.

He adds that cherry sales were nearly as fast as the ware-houses could pack them up until the rains came in August. From there the market was a bit clogged, but overall the market has been good. The state was expecting to pack 16.5 million boxes, but with Mother Nature stepping in it looks like the final pack out will end up closer to 18 million, according to the general manager. Right now the cooperative is harvesting and packing pears. Gold Digger growers started harvesting bartletts at the end of August, then moved into boscs and will be packing anjous in mid-September. “Everything was about 10 days back because of the cooler weather we had in the spring and early summer. With the heat we have been having lately though it looks more like we will be about five days later than last year’s harvest,” Moser said. When there is hot weather during harvest there is always the chance of sunburned fruit, but Moser says the days have been cooling off about 2 o’clock
each day and the pears have not been getting sunburned. Pickers have been going to work earlier each day in order to work before the warmest part of the day. Moser said the labor force this year is “adequate” and there hasn’t been any time when there were too many people to harvest and pick the fruit in this area. While the trend not so long ago was to pull out trees, spe-cially apples, there have been more growers planting new trees and new varieties. Moser said many growers are planting Honey Crisp, gala and Fuji apple tress. “We’re still seeing more cherries being planted and grow-ers are planting varieties that ma-ture at different times. They’re figuring out ways to utilize the picking crews for longer times,” he said. Gold Digger Inc. has also picked up some new grower members, but is always looking for more small grower to add to its family. Anyone interested in finding out what Gold Digger has to offer should contact the cooperative at (509) 476-3646.
