In an effort to make sure visitors are informed of the many amenities San Clemente and the surrounding areas have to offer, we have produced the 7th Annual Visitors Guide with information regarding San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano and Dana Point. Information contained in the Guide will be included in the Chamber Website.

Visitor Guide

The Chamber receives approximately 125 visitors a week, to our office, seeking information on San Clemente and the adjacent vicinities. In addition, we send out over 40 Visitors & Tourism information packets through the mail, per week. Marketing the three cities together, guests realize that San Clemente is truly a destination municipality. As a result, visitors recognize the many features the area has to offer.

The Guide includes information pertinent to visitors and will feature member businesses that are relevant to the tourism market. This is a free member benefit.

Website & iPad

One of the elements of the Chamber website is “Visit San Clemente.” These pages contain information that is currently published in our Chamber’s Visitors Guide. In addition, the Guide was formatted to be utilized on the IPad.

The City of San Clemente and Council Members-Mayor Jim Evert, Mayor Pro Tem Tim Brown, Lori Donchak, Jim Dahl and Bob Baker, along with the City Manager George Scarborough are to be commended for seeing the vision and making this projects possible. In addition, special thanks to Shelly & Don Kindred, Kindred Associates for design, artwork & photos.

SAN CLEMENTE CHAMBER EXPLAINS THREE SIGNIFICANT NEW EMPLOYMENT LAWS

The San Clemente Chamber of Commerce has highlighted three important new laws that employers need to be aware of in 2018: parental leave for small employers, restrictions on salary history questions, and the ban-the-box-law.

Parental Leave for Small EmployersAn important new law requires that small employers provide new parents with up to 12 workweeks of unpaid leave.

SB 63, the New Parent Leave Act, requires small businesses with 20 or more employees to provide eligible employees up to 12 weeks of unpaid, job-protected leave to bond with a new child. The leave must be taken within one year of the child’s birth, adoption, or foster care placement.

“Employers need to note that under the law they must guarantee the right to reinstatement to the same or comparable position before the leave begins,” Frank says.

The New Parent Leave Act will have the greatest impact on employers with 20 to 49 employees who are not currently required to provide baby bonding leave under the federal Family and Medical Leave Act or the California Family Rights Act.

No More Salary History QuestionsAnother new 2018 law, AB 168, restricts the types of salary questions employers can ask job applicants.Under this law, an employer is forbidden from asking about the prior salary of an applicant. The new law also prohibits an employer from asking a recruiter to find out about the salary of an applicant. In addition, employers cannot rely on salary history information as a factor in determining whether to hire the applicant or how much to pay the applicant.

Ban the BoxAB 1008 is what’s commonly called the “ban-the-box” law.

The law effectively eliminates the employer’s ability to do a criminal background check before a conditional offer is made to an applicant.

AB 1008 applies to employers with five or more employees. The law does provide steps for an employer to follow after making a conditional offer, should the employer still want to know about prior convictions.

Together We’re Better!

Providing Networking Opportunities to Build Business Relationships

CURRENT JANUARY 2018 9

Chamber Looks Ahead article cont. from page 7

Your Chamber has the most effective method of combin-ing all of the powerful Internet resources available today; Search Engines, Social Networks, Local Directories, Email Marketing, Blog Posts and Press Releases are just but a few examples of how the chamber information is ex-ponentially propagated globally at the click of a button to increase awareness of member’s businesses or to achieve other marketing objectives, such as product sales.

Committee & Council Involvement Opportunities:

The Ambassadors Council - Sponsors the Sunset Networking functions and New Member Orientations. Ambassadors serve as the communication link between all councils and encourage participation in all events. Am-bassadors develop membership retention.

Business Networking Luncheon – The Network-ing Council grants members the opportunity to market & showcase their business to numerous other Chamber members. The Networking Council meets at a different restaurant each month, thus providing Chamber member restaurants the opportunity to also showcase their estab-lishments.

The Chamber Represents the Interests of Business with Government – In addition to the Legislative program of work discussed above, the Chamber works with Legislators to shape bills, educates members in respect to Bad Business Bills and champions business friendly legislation. The Chamber is also an advocate for individual members.

Council & Coalition Involvement opportunities:

Legislative Council - On behalf of the business com-munity, examines current legislative issues and makes recommendations to the Chamber Board of Directors regarding a position and course of action. Encourages involvement and understanding of the actions of govern-ment. Hosting meetings featuring legislative representa-tives speaking on business issues.

Legislative Coalition - The Coalition hosts a Legisla-tive Luncheon several times a year. Topics for the lun-cheon are based on the individual Chamber’s Legislative Councils issues and/or concerns. Legislators are then invited to the Luncheon and asked to speak on those cur-rent business matters. The Coalition is comprised of the following Chambers: Dana Point, Laguna Beach, Laguna Niguel, San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.

Creating A Strong Local Economy

LOCAL CHAMBERS: A BEST RESOURCE Tap Assets to Gain Competitive Edge

In these tough economic times, small businesses need to tap the resources that are available in their communities to weather the storm. They need to look no further than their local chambers for help.

Local chambers advocate for small businesses at the local, regional, state, and national levels.Every day, they work to keep government at bay so that you can focus on running your business. They also introduce you to potential customers through business referral programs, market your business online and in their directories, and offer special discounts through various affinity programs such as insurance, shipping, and office supplies.

Local chambers are a one-stop shop for business information, including market access information for small businesses thinking about expanding, economic profiles of the community, workforce statistics, contact information for government officials, and regional trend studies.

Small business tool kits, which are found on your local chamber’s Web site, can help with developing business, marketing, and communications plans as well as finding capital. If you’re thinking about expanding your business, the local chamber should be your first call.

Local chambers are one of the best places to make business connections. After-hour networking programs and networking luncheons on topics relevant to business help you stay in the game and gain a competitive edge. In addition membership in your local chamber can greatly enhance your company’s brand.

A national study titled The Real Value of Joining a Local Chamber of Commerce, conducted by The Schapiro Group, an Atlanta-based marketing research firm, suggests the following:

When consumers know that a business is a member of the local chamber, they are 44% more likely to think favorably of it.

Consumers who are told that a business is a chamber member are 51 % more likely to be highly aware of it and 57% more likely to think positively of its local reputation.

Consumers are 63% more likely to buy goods and services in the future from a company that they believe is a member of the local chamber of commerce.

In addition, when business decision makers believe that a business is a chamber member, they are 37% more likely to think favorably of the business, 51% more likely to be highly aware of it, 58% more likely to think positively of its local reputation, and 59% more likely to buy goods and services from it.

With numbers like this, run-don’t-walk to your local chamber and get engaged with its program of work. A strong chamber symbolizes a strong community-both benefit from each other.

Together we’re Better!
