In October 2012, Australias holiday capital the City of Gold Coast signaled its intention to add cultural tourism to its current visitor appeal, with the launch of an international design competition to establish a landmark cultural precinct.

The chosen site is 11 hectares of centrally-located land at Evandale in the citys heart, framed by the Nerang River and views to the Surfers Paradise skyline and Gold Coast Hinterland.

Mayor Tom Tate said the Council was seeking to create a landmark precinct which would evolve into the citys arts and cultural hub and a place which would be loved by residents and become a must-see visitor destination.

The Gold Coast is widely acknowledged as Australias holiday playground. But we are so much more than that, with a wealth of creative talent and industry, Cr Tate said.

In 2018, when the Gold Coast hosts the Commonwealth Games, we want the world to see our citys many rich facets.

Councils vision for the precinct includes:

A Living Arts Centre for performing arts and cinema;

A New Arts Museum for media, art and design, and

An outdoor garden Artscape, ready for a wide variety of artistic activity and a green bridge connecting the precinct to Chevron Island.

With this emphasis on the outdoor Artscape, the Gold Coast Mayor proposes a precinct which is quintessentially Gold Coast.

To deliver its vision, Council launched an International Design Competition to challenge the worlds best design teams to deliver innovative proposals that blur distinctions between architecture, urbanism, landscape and art.

From a eld of 75 entries, drawn from across the globe, an expert jury has shortlisted three design teams for an intensive 12-week Stage Two design period.

The nal jury evaluation is due to be held in October and the winner will be announced followed by a public exhibition in late November.
