Youve found us! And thats one of the beauties of this place:

It takes a certain spirit to discover Gold Beach.

Located on the Southern Oregon Coast, Gold Beach is a seaside town. And a river town, and a forest/mountain town. Where the Rogue River meets the PacificOcean, youll find a taste of the Pacific Northwest that you might have thought nolonger existed. With a population of approximately 2,600, Gold Beach is largeenough to offer all of the amenities of a big town: hospital, doctors, dentist, opticians, shopping, restaurants, banks, groceries, library, and live theater to namea few. What we dont have are malls, traffic, gridlock, freeways or gangs. Our small

town offers a community spirit where its nice to know your neighbor and have afriendly wave from folks passing by.

It's one of the Northwest's choicestbases for launching yourself intoabout anything you've beenmeaning to do "someday" whitewater jet boating, kayaking, windsurfing, wilderness mountainhiking or biking, or maybe justseeing an eagle, otter or bear that'snot in a pen. There's magic to that, and something really magical aboutknowing it's like this here all

    the time.

Heres the thing about Gold Beach: There aren't a lot of people here, and thatprobably makes the biggest difference. You don't waste precious time in traffic, waiting in lines or dealing with folks who'd rather be someplace else. Its easygoing .

The history of the area that has most influenced the Gold Beach you see todaybegan in the mid-1800s. In 1853, a short time after gold was discovered inCalifornia, the shiny stuff was found in the beach sand near the mouth of the RogueRiver. Gold Beach was born, and established fast. Originally given the name of

Ellensburg, in 1858 the town became the county seat of the newlyformed Curry County. But, everyone called it Gold Beach.

Prospectors poured into the area and set up their sluice boxes, andsoon a number of small enterprises sprang up around them, withpeople making a living on salmon, logging, tanning and simplykeeping all those folks stocked with food and dry goods. None of the

mines ever amounted to much, compared to the gold fields elsewhere, but thereare still a few gold mining operations in the upriver area and gold can still bepanned on the beach.

The prospectors are long gone, but many small outposts on the Rogue still plygoods to a different kind of fortune hunter the angler.

Hard to imagine, but in the late nineteenth century it wasnt known that salmonwould take a hook and line; for years salmon was heavily harvested with seine andgill nets. In 1876, Robert D. Hume established a canning operation and very quicklycame to dominate the industry locally. In 1878 he built the first fish hatchery in thearea at Hatchery Gulch just south of Indian Creek.

In 1896, a Mr. Frank was fishing for trout near themouth of the Rogue River using a fly rod and smallspinner. To his and everyone elses surprise hereeled in an 18-pound salmon, and Rogue Riversport fishing was born.

Salmon has played an important role in contributing to the local economy since. As gold mining, fur trapping and the lumber industries declined inimportance locally, each forced a large number of people to leave the area in search of work. After1908, commercial fishing on the Rogue expandedrapidly and the salmon fishery was largely depletedin a very short time; in 1935 commercial fishing on

the Rogue was ended by state legislation. Since then sport fishing has taken off and a number of enthusiasts have formed organizations to protect

and increase the salmon population not only in the Rogue, but also in other coastalrivers up and down the state. Today the salmon, steelhead, trout and other sportfish draw enthusiasts from around the country to this small town.
