GREEN DESIGNMinimizes its impact on the environment through conservation

of energy, water, and other resources, while contributing to the health of its occupants

without compromising the aesthetic design.

COMPONENTS OF GREEN DESIGN

Page 5: Going Green Without Greenbacks

• Simple steps can go a long way toward improving indoor air quality, lowering pollution levels, reducing landfill waste, and saving energy.

• Contrary to popular belief, these steps don't have to be expensive. Many even generate an investment return greater than the monetary value spent on the project.

TEAR OUT REVEALS NO INSULATION and unsealed gaps

A Easy SOLUTION TO GAINING ENERGY EFFICIENCY IS TO ADD

INSULATIONSome Insulation was in the

CEILING AND FLOORS BUT None in THE WALLS

Time to correct Under-structured construction that is common in Post

WW2 housing due to shortages of material at the time

Page 19: Going Green Without Greenbacks

Insulate and Seal to Improve Energy Efficiency

• Add insulation to block heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer

• R-38 IS RECOMMEMDED FOR ATTICS WHICH WOULD BE ABOUT 10-14”

• Seal air leaks throughout to block drafts, insects and critters

Page 20: Going Green Without Greenbacks

• Energy star.gov

• has aids to help you show your clients where common leaks occur, like this illustration from an EPA pamphlet

• SEALING BENEFITS

• lower utility bills reduces noise pollution

• reduces pollen and dust

• Keeps out insects and critters

Excerpts From Sustainability Survey

• 84% of consumers currently purchase at least some green products.

• Only 1% of consumers who purchased green abandoned the category.

• A high percentage of green consumers expect to convert to green products in new categories

• Price is the main reason non-green consumers have not purchased green

• Almost 2/3 of consumers have changed their green purchase behavior in response to the recession.

• Most of these consumers have switched to less expensive green products(41%) or simply reduced the overall amount of green products that they use (19%).

• However, 16% of consumers have actually increased their use of green products.

• Key findings from Grail Research's "The Green Revolution" report
