• On-orbit spare
• GOES-14 in PLT
• Continuity of operations since 1974
• Two polar operational satellites; one in morning and one in afternoon orbit
• Launch upon failure of imager or sounder
• Continuity of operations since early 1960s
• Since May 2007, NOAA using EUMETSAT satellite operationally for mid-morning orbit through NOAA/EUMETSAT partnership

NOAA Satellite Services Overview
Office of Satellite Operations (OSO): • Manages the launch (w/NASA), operation and maintenance of NOAA’s environmental satellites.
• Ensures the lasting operation of NOAA’s satellites through operations of ground system receive stations in Wallops Island, VA; Fairbanks, AK; and Suitland, MD.
• Command, control, communicate with GOES, POES, DMSP on-orbit satellites on a 24 by 7 basis.
• Acquires data from GOES, POES, DSMP, and Jason-2
Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution (OSDPD):
• Manages the operational processing system that converts satellite data (GOES, POES, DMSP, Jason-2) into environmental products for users.

Operations Overview
Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) Provide continuous monitoring of North and South America, and Atlantic
and Eastern Pacific Oceans Primary source of data for short term forecasting, especially of severe
weather such as tropical storms
Polar-orbiting Operational Environmental Satellites (POES) Provides world-wide coverage every 12 hours Directly broadcasts data to users worldwide Primary source of data for longer term weather prediction, global
environmental monitoring, and long-term predictions
Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Department of Defense satellite operated by NOAA Provides world-wide coverage every 12 hours Directly broadcasts data to Department of Defense users
Ocean Surface Topography Mission (OTSM) Jason-2 Joint NOAA, NASA, CNES, EUMETSAT effort provides sea surface heights for determining ocean circulation, climate
change and sea-level rise
Non-NOAA Data (NASA, Foreign Governments)

User ServicesUser Services
The Satellite Services Division serves as the primary interface with the user community of environmental satellite data and products:
• Provides realtime notifications to users and stakeholders of any type of activity affecting product ingest, processing or distribution
• Maintains “One Stop Shop” Help Desk responsible for the monitoring of many operational OSDPD products and services, and serves as the “first line” information portal for users with problems or questions about products.
• Serves as the conduit of information between users and the Product Area Leads (PALs), concerning inquiries about product or dissemination specifics.
• Enhances the knowledge transfer between OSDPD and stakeholders, concerning new or enhanced products or services, changes to operational or experimental satellite systems, and facilitates the transition of products from research to operations (R2O)
![Page 10: GOES Products and Services Overview Including User Services 6 th GOES Users Conference](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022070411/56814716550346895db44f57/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
User ServicesUser Services
Maintaining information portals to enhance the flow of information between OSDPD/SSD and users:
• Updated web page with FAQ, contacts, and archive of all notifications
• E-mail lists, GTS bulletins, Twitter, RSS feeds
• Acquiring Help Desk/CRM Tools with user “portals” for instant access to information
• Integrating web based information delivery pages with existing SOCC status charts
• Involved in the development and deployment of the Satellite Product End to End Documentation System (SPEEDS)

User ServicesUser Services
A Concept of Operations (ConOps) was developed for OSDPD User Services to assist with the development, integration, and enhancement of all user services:
• Customer Relationship Management
• User Inquiries
• Problem Reporting
• Data ingest, processing, and distribution status charts
• Satellite and instrument status
• Facility/IT status
• Routine and scheduled satellite events
• Meetings were held with stakeholders (NESDIS and NWS) to solicit feedback and suggestions on User Notifications.
• Help Desk procedures were modified to allow operators to generate notifications and management calls with greater ease and efficiency.
• All operational products and applications are currently being vetted to determine notification requirements, management escalation, and user impacts.
Help Desk Process Improvements

Current methodology for requesting GOES I-P Rapid Scan
AWIPS does not handle Super Rapid Scan (for research and special events only)
NWS Request for RSO through SDM
SDM relays request to SAB. SAB checks
schedule (maneuvers, eclipse, etc)
SAB relays request to ESPC Operations.
ESPC generates user notice
ESPC relays request to SOCC. SOCC
generates schedule and confirms

Up to 40% of schedule during Spring/Summer “Convective” season is comprised of Rapid Scanning.
Results in significant loss of satellite coverage for South America
