GOD’S PLANFOR PEOPLE

LIFE POINT: God made people in His own imaGe.

LEADER BIBLE STUDY In the last session we showed how modern astronomy verifies the universe was

created. Even more astounding is that science has discovered how the universe is

fine-tuned for the existence of human life. Consider this: if the earth was not 93 million

miles from the sun, was not tilted on its axis at precisely 23.4 degrees, did not rotate

exactly once every 24 hours, or did not revolve around the sun every 365.25 days, we

could not exist on this planet!

We traced God’s process to prepare the world for the pinnacle of His creation: The

human race! Beginning in Genesis 2:4, we see how God made man and woman.

God formed man (Hebrew: Adam) and breathed into him the “breath of life.”

God placed the man, later named Adam, in a beautiful garden where nourishing

plants grew. In the garden were two special trees: the tree of life and the tree of the

knowledge of good and evil. God forbade Adam to eat from the tree of the knowledge

of good and evil.

As time passed God allowed the Adam to name all the animals. Nonetheless, none

was really adequate as his companion. Therefore, God put Adam to sleep and formed a

woman from his rib. God brought them together and blessed the marriage of the man

and woman.

What is the special significance of God’s breathing life into Adam so that Adam

became a “living being?”

Why did God forbid Adam to eat fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good

and evil?

Why is God’s definition of marriage so significant? (see Jesus’ affirmation:

Matthew 19:4-6; Mark 10:6-9)

BIBLE STORY

God’s Plan for People

God created a man out of the dust of the ground. God breathed life into the man, and

he became a living being. God made the man in His Own image.

God planted a garden in Eden, and He made every tree to grow in the garden. Some

trees were beautiful and some trees supplied food. A river went out from Eden to water

the garden. From there it divided and became the start of four other rivers.

God took the man He created and placed him in the garden. God planned for the man

to work in the garden and to watch over it. God told him that he could eat from any

tree in the garden except for one.

God saw that it was not good for the man to be alone. He decided to make the man

a helper. God brought all of the animals of the ground and the birds of the sky to the

man. The man named all of the animals and birds. But none of them could be the

man’s helper.

God caused the man to fall asleep. God took one of the man’s ribs and closed the man’s

skin. Then God made the rib from the man into a woman. God took the woman to the

man. The man said, “This is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh. I will call her woman

because she was taken from man.”

PRACTICE BIBLE SKILLS • Place the boys in one group and the girls in another.

• Ask kids to open their Bibles to Genesis 2 and find the words man and woman.

• Guide the boys to find the name of a man anywhere in the Bible and call out the

reference. Write the reference on a marker or poster board.

• Invite the girls to find the reference and to call out the name mentioned in the verse.

Write the name beside the reference.

• Switch roles and play again.

• Instruct the girls to find the name of a woman in the Bible and call out the reference.

Add the reference to the marker or poster board.

• Lead the boys to find the reference and to call out the name mentioned in the verse.

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY • Give each group of three to four kids a large piece of foil.

• Guide each group to wrap the foil around an object in the room.

• Lead kids to gently remove the foil to create a mold of the object.

• Guide groups to ask another group to guess what the foil represents.

• Next, give each group of kids a large piece of foil and a doll.

• Guide each group to wrap the foil around the doll’s face.

• Lead kids to gently remove the foil to create a mold of the doll’s face.

• Talk about how the impressions resemble faces. Explain that when God created

people He did something much greater. He created people in His own image!

• Show “God’s Plan for People: Introduction” video.

MISSIONS EMPHASIS • Show the video “Learning the Stories” or read the missions story.

• Lead kids to make comparisons about your church and the church they saw in the

video. Remind kids that kids in West Africa are hearing the same Bible stories they are!

• Comment that Kimberly Cain hopes that as the children learn, they will grow up and

choose to follow Jesus. Kimberly believes that God has special plans for these children.

• Pray and thank God for missionaries like Kimberly who are telling children all over the

›DVD-Click on the missions tab video menu to find the video “Learning the Stories.”

›“International Missions: West Africa” (CD)

› large bath towels–Place towels on the floor for kids to sit on.

PRACTICE BIBLE SKILLS • Review the general content of each of the Old Testament Law books (Genesis–story

about creation and the first people; Exodus–the story of the exit of God’s people from

Egypt; Leviticus–laws God gave His people; Numbers–events during 40 years in the

wilderness; Deuteronomy–Moses’ final “do’s and don’ts” to the people).

• Lead kids to stand in a circle, one palm facing up. Place the box lid on one of the kids’

hands, then drop one marble in the lid.

• Kids should pass the box lid around the circle using only their flat hands. When the

marble drops through one of the labeled holes, prompt kids to tell you what kind of

information or stories they can find in that book.

• After each rotation around the circle, add another marble and direct kids to pass the

lid in the opposite direction.

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY • Direct kids to sit in a circle.

• Read the characteristics below. Kids who fit the description will move one chair to

the right; kids who do not fit the description will stay seated. If the chair is already

occupied, kids should share the space (put a hand on the chair, balance a knee on the

seat, and so on).

• Use descriptions like: blue eyes, snores, not ticklish, only child, fish owner, plays an

instrument, likes going barefoot, can ice skate, and so forth.

• Remark that God created all kinds of people, but all the people He created are made in

His image.

• Show “God’s Plan for People: Introduction” video.

MISSIONS EMPHASIS • Show the video “Learning the Stories” or read the missions story.

STUDY THE BIBLE ►1. Unit Verse

• Sing “Your Amazing World” (track 1).

• Display the “Unit 1 Banner and Verse.”

• Invite kids to say the verse together

several times.

• Give one child a sticky note and ask him

to place the note over a word.

• Guide the kids to say the verse, including

the covered word.

• Continue until kids cover all words and

can say the verse from memory.

• Option: Teach the weekly Bible verse,

Genesis 1:27.

►2. Bible Story

• Invite kids to play a mirror game.

• Encourage one child to choose a

movement. Offer suggestions (such as

jumping in place, swinging his arms, or

stretching from side to side.)

• Guide the other kids to mirror his

movement. For example, if the child

hops on his right foot, the kids should

mirror him and hop on their left feet.

• Hold up a mirror. Explain that a mirror

shows a reflection of something.

• Distribute the Kids Activity Pages.

• Guide kids to discover the missing word

in “Trace the Numbers.”

• Ask kids to define the term image.

• Explain that an image is “something that

closely resembles something else.” God

created us like Him in the way we think,

feel, and decide.

• Guide kids to listen for the word image

as you open your Bible to Genesis 2 and

tell the story.

►3. Review

• Display the Teaching Picture.

• Invite kids to explain how the word

image was used in the story.

• Ask kids the review questions.

• Pray and thank God for making people

in His Own image.

►4. Life Action

• Explain that God made each person

special.

• Tell kids to think about qualities that

make them different.

• Remind kids that all of our differences

are good, such as the color of our skin,

the number of freckles we have on our

face, the color of our hair, or the size of

our feet.

• Comment that even though we each

have differences, we are all made in

God’s image.

• Hold the mirror and share something

special about the way God made you.

• Invite kids to pass the mirror around and

share something special about the way

God made them.

• Comment that God created us to have a

relationship with Him, but sin keeps us

from right relationships with Him. That’s

why God sent Jesus—to provide a way

for our sins to be forgiven so that each

of us could have a relationship with God

that would last forever.

LIFE POINT

►1. Bible Story

• Sing “Your Amazing World” (track 1).

• Lead kids to review, in order, the result of

each of the days of creation in Genesis 1.

• Comment that Genesis 2 provides more

details about how God provided for the

people He created.

• Open your Bible to Genesis 2 and tell

the Bible story. Note: Guide preteens or

strong readers to investigate the chapter

on their own first. Provide additional

detail as you summarize the story.

• Distribute Kids Activity Pages.

• After reviewing the significance of

chapter and verse numbers in a Bible

reference, lead kids to complete “Found

It!”

• Invite volunteers to read or recap what

they found.

►2. Review

• Direct kids to stand in a circle.

• Volley a balloon across the circle as you

begin a sentence related to the Bible

story: “When God …”

• The player who catches the balloon

should add one word to the series

before volleying to a new player: “When

God made …” Use the Teaching Picture

as a prompt.

• Continue until kids construct an accurate

sentence, one word at a time. Repeat as

time permits.

• To simplify, volley the balloon around

the circle in order rather than at random.

►3. Unit Verse

• Display the “Unit 1 Banner and Verse.”

• Lead kids to read it aloud with you.

• Allow a volunteer to suggest an action

(clapping, stomping) to substitute for the

word created. Lead kids to say the verse,

making the proper substitution.

• Enlist another volunteer to suggest a

second action to replace image. Say the

verse with both substitutions.

• Continue to replace words with actions.

• Option: Teach the weekly Bible verse,

Genesis 1:27.

►4. Life Action

• Explain that being made in God’s image

refers to our ability to think, feel, act,

and decide. When we sin, we are not

thinking, feeling, acting, or deciding in a

way that honors God.

• Talk about how Jesus is the perfect

image of God. Jesus was perfect and

without sin. His sacrifice on the cross

enables us to receive forgiveness for our

sin and have eternal life.

• Call attention to “Who, Me? Like Him?”

on the Kids Activity Page.

• Give kids a few moments to respond to

the survey and suggest other actions,

thoughts, or characteristics that reflect

God’s image.

• Remind kids that sin keeps people from

being perfect reflections of God, but it

does not keep people from God’s love!

God still loves us even though we sin.

• Show “God’s Plan for People: Life Action”

video.

LIVE IT OUT ►Choice 1: Symmetrical Drawing

• Distribute the “Symmetrical Drawings,”

mirrors, and drawing tools.

• Invite kids to hold mirrors on the

half-drawings to see full images of

things God created.

• Explain that only people are made in

God’s image.

• Encourage kids to choose a drawing.

Lead right-handed kids to choose an

image on the left side and left-handed

kids to choose an image on the right

side.

• Guide kids to place the mirror on the line

with the mirror side facing the image

and look down at the paper to see the

reflection.

• Invite kids to draw the other half of the

image on the paper.

• Distribute blank sheets of paper and

challenge kids to make their own

symmetry drawings.

• Guide each child to draw a line down the

middle of his paper and then draw half

of a symmetrical face or design on one

side of the paper.

• Remind kids that God created people in

His image.

►Choice 2: Build and Compare

• Place kids into groups of three.

• Set up a file folder on a table. Place one

container of play dough behind each file

folder.

• Guide the first child to go behind the file

folder and use half of the play dough to

make one thing God created.

• Lead the second child to go behind the

file folder and describe the structure as

the third child (who cannot see it) tries

to build the same structure with the

remaining half of the play dough.

• Tell kids to use descriptive words to help

describe the structure to the child who

cannot see it.

• Suggest kids talk about the size in

comparison to coins, Ping-Pong® balls, or

crayons.

• Compare the two structures when the

child finishes. Talk about the parts that

turned out the same and those that look

different.

• Allow kids to rotate to each position and

play a total of three times.

• Share how it is difficult for two kids to

make the exact same structure.

• Remind kids that God made man and

woman in His image and that we are not

like any of His other creations.

►Wrap Up

• Show “God’s Plan for People: Wrap Up”

video.

• Remind kids to give their One

LIFE POINT

►Choice 1: Imago Dei Bracelets

• Guide kids to find and read Genesis 5:1.

• Encourage kids to define, in their own

words, what it means to be created in

God’s image.

• Ask: “Did God create anyone who does

not reflect His image? What makes

it difficult to treat some people as a

reflection of God’s image?”

• Show the construction paper phrase.

• Emphasize that, without exception, all

people possess the imago Dei (Latin for

“image of God.”)

• Discuss how recognizing and respecting

God’s image in others can create

friendships and strengthen relationships.

• Give everyone two cardboard cuffs.

• Lead kids to wrap the cuffs with narrow

strips of printed tape and on the inside

or outside write imago Dei.

• Guide kids to keep one cuff and give the

other one away.

• Challenge kids to tell the recipient that

he or she is created in God’s image.

►Choice 2: All About Appearances

• Comment that instead of basing a

person’s self-worth on being made in

God’s image, many people rely on other

things to feel special.

• Provide newspapers, magazines,

scissors, and glue.

• Guide kids to create a collage with

pictures and captions of things that

represent appearance-based or external-

based self-worth (such as expensive

clothes, strength and athletic ability,

popularity, and so on).

• Prompt kids to explain each picture on

the collage.

• Option: provide markers and allow kids

to draw representative pictures.

• When about five minutes remain, call

for volunteers to read these verses:

Deuteronomy 33:3; 1 Samuel 16:7;

Jeremiah 1:5; Isaiah 43:4; Ephesians 2:10.

• Remind kids that nothing gives a person

more value than being created and

cherished by God.

God caused the man to fall asleep. God took one of the man’s ribs and closed the man’s skin. Then God made the rib from the man into a woman. God took the woman to the man. The man said, “This is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh. I will call her woman because she was taken from man.”—based on Genesis 2:4-24

THE BIBLE MEETS LIFE: Parents, today your child heard that God has a plan for the people He created. God created people in His image, and people are His most special creation. How does your family respond to being created in God’s image?

LIVE IT OUT: Discuss with your child what the phrase “in God’s image” means. What about the creation of people was different from all other things God created? List some characteristics your child has that are special only to her.

GOD’S PLAN FOR PEOPLEGod created a man out of the dust of the ground. God breathed life into the man, and he became a living being. God made the man in His Own image. God planted a garden in Eden, and He made every tree to grow in the garden. Some trees were beautiful and some trees supplied food. A river went out from Eden to water the garden. From there it divided and became the start of four other rivers.

God took the man He created and placed him in the garden. God planned for the man to work in the garden and to watch over it. God told him that he could eat from any tree in the garden except for one.God saw that it was not good for the man to be alone. He decided to make the man a helper. God brought all of the animals of the ground and the birds of the sky to the man. The man named all of the animals and birds. But none of them could be the man’s helper.

TODAY’S TEMPERATURE PRAYER REMINDER

k Color each thermometer to show the daily temperature where you live.

k The red line on each thermometer shows what today’s temperature is like in West Africa.

k If the temperature where you live ends with an even number, ask God to give the people

of West Africa a strong desire to learn about Him!

k If the temperature where you live ends with an odd number, ask God to keep missionaries

in West Africa safe.

k If the temperature where you live is more than 10 degrees lower than the temperature in

West Africa, ask God to give the missionaries great ideas for ways to share God’s love.

Learning the Stories

INTERNATIONAL MISSIONS

Children all over the world are important to Jesus.

He loves them and wants them to learn about

Him when they are very young. Christian workers,

like Kimberly Cain in West Africa, love the children

like Jesus does.

Sometimes Kimberly teaches kids as they sit on

mats on the dusty ground. Sometimes she teaches

kids at a local church where the roof is made of

woven grass. That church building might not look

like yours, but the children in West Africa are learning the same stories from the

Bible that you are!

Kimberly uses a storying cloth to tell stories from the Bible. Each picture on the cloth tells

a story. Kimberly tells children the story of creation and continues with stories about Jesus

so children can grow up knowing Him and telling others about Him.

Ways to pray for the people and missionaries

in West Africa:

k Pray that missionaries will be willing and able to learn the language spoken by the

people so they can tell the people about Jesus.

k Pray for missionaries as they adjust to a different culture in a part of the world where

the temperature stays very hot all year.

k Pray that the children of West Africa will learn to follow Jesus at a young age.

KIMBERLY CAIN

The Bible storying cloth includes pictures of Bible stories starting with the creation and ending

with Christ. This method of teaching the gospel is called “Creation to Christ.”

A Christian worker in West Africa teaches the Bible using a Bible storying cloth. It includes pictures of different Bible stories.
