Do you remember Passover (lesson 6)?

The Hebrew people were slaves in Egypt.

Pharaoh didn’t let the Hebrew people go home.

Therefore God sent death to every first-born in Egypt, except to…..those in homes where the blood of a lam was on the doorposts;they were covered by the blood.

Exodus 12:12-13“On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD. The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.

Remember the anger of the religious leaders and the Roman rulers? That led to controversy about Jesus and ultimately to the today’s topic: Jesus’ death

In the last week of his life Jesus communicated two major things:

- He explained the true nature of …………..

- He told His disciples that He was to be killed by the religious leaders and three days later He would …………………..

Jesus confronted the religious leaders with the fact that they made extrarules, which made it …….... for people to follow God.difficult

His mission

rise from the dead

John 10: 25-30 “Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the ……… are ……..” Father one

Before His arrest, Jesus celebrated the Passover in a meal with His disciples. In Mark 14: 22-24 we read:

The Jews understood quite clearly that Jesus claimed to be God. To them this was blasphemy and deserved death.

“While they were eating, Jesus took …….., and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take it; ………………...” Then he took ………………, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it. “ ………………….of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them.”

In John 10: 14-18 Jesus states during the trial that no one takes His life from Him. He lays it down of his own choosing.

What does this say to us about Jesus?

Page 6: God's love and justice intersect & He is risen Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Jesus was finally taken to the Romans to be put to death by crucifixion.

What’s the real reason why Jesus had to die (Romans 3:19-26) ?

- the holiness of God, the need to judge sin to maintain divine justice

- Jesus died as representative man and our substitute to satisfy God’s righteousness

- grace therefore being offered so that the unrighteous may be forgiven

While Jesus hung on the cross He spoke with the Father and he saidsomething about those who killed him (Luke 23:34) ?

Jesus was thirsty hanging on the cross. They gave him wine vinegar to drink. “When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “……………..” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit (John 19:30)”.

It is finished.

“Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

“He has risen”Jesus’ burial and resurrection on the third day

How did the Romans make sure that Jesus was dead (John 19:33-37) ?

“But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers …………………………………….., bringing a sudden flow of …..…………….. The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. These things happened so that the scripture1 would be fulfilled: “……………………….. will be broken,” and, as another scripture2 says, “They will look on the one they have ……….”

Women went to the tomb on the third day. They had an encounter with an angel and ran back to Jesus’ followers. What did Jesus’ followers discover at the tomb on that third day (John 20:1-9) ?

1Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. 2So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” 3So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. 4Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. 6Then Simon Peter came along behind him and went straight into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, 7as well as the cloth that had been wrapped around Jesus’ head. The cloth was still lying in its place, separate from the linen. 8Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. 9(They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)
