WE ARE THE HEART, HANDS, AND FEET OF JESUS IN THE HEART OF ORLANDO. MARCH 2015 God's Forgetfulness N ow, that’s a strange title for a church newsletter article, isn’t it? After all, as we think about the quality of “forgetfulness” we tend to think of it as a human weakness. Thus, we have all manner of to do lists, reminders, and we are quick to make sure those around us do not forget what they are supposed to do (think: parenting and “spouse management”). We even tease that forgetfulness goes hand-in-hand with “growing older.” How, then, could this be a quality that God shares? Considering “God’s forgetfulness” leads us to ponder a mystery and a paradox. Our God knows all things. “Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account” (Hebrews 4:13). And yet, it is part and parcel of the New Covenant in Christ’s blood that our gracious God is one who forgets. “This is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,” declares the LORD. “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the LORD,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,” declares the LORD. “For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” Jeremiah 31:33-34 In this way, the Lord loves to forget. And while there may be times in our “lost-ness,” our loneliness, our anxiety, or our pain that we feel as if God may have forgotten us, He assures us that, for Jesus’ sake, he can never forget, can never forsake, can never abandon us. He has given His promise that is sure and true: “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands!” Isaiah 49:15-16a The inspiration for this article was that Pastor Ken forgot the Crossroads deadline. ~ pk

God's Forgetfulness

Now, that’s a strange title for a church newsletter article, isn’t it? After all, as we think about the quality of “forgetfulness” we tend to think of

it as a human weakness. Thus, we have all manner of to do lists, reminders, and we are quick to make sure those around us do not forget what they are supposed to do (think: parenting and “spouse management”). We even tease that forgetfulness goes hand-in-hand with “growing older.” How, then, could this be a quality that God shares?Considering “God’s forgetfulness” leads us to ponder a mystery and a paradox.

“For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” Jeremiah 31:33-34

In this way, the Lord loves to forget. See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands!” Isaiah 49:15-16a

the season of Lent gives us opportunity to be renewed by God’s power as we prepare to celebrate the glorious resurrection of Jesus at Easter. This year our midweek worship services draw us to look to selected Psalms as God shapes and renews our life of faith. The Psalms, although written long before Jesus’ time, connect us with Jesus. Theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer in his book, Life Together, helps us to understand what he called the “secret of the psalter”: “The Psalter is the prayer book of Jesus Christ…. He prayed the Psalter and now it has become his prayer for all time.” As we encounter Jesus Himself praying in these Psalms, Jesus draws us into His “Songs of Renewal.”

ASK YOURSELF…These QuesTions reGardinG a “chariTaBle reMainder TrusT: a GreaT way To donaTe.”

1. Do you plan to donate to charity, either now or through your estate, when the Lord calls you home?

2. Would you prefer some control over whether you will be an involuntary philanthropist (paying taxes to the IRA) or a voluntary philanthropist (making charitable gifts to the ministries you desire)?

3. Have you ever considered naming your favorite charities as beneficiaries under your will, trusts, life insurance policies, annuities, or even retirement accounts?

4. Would you like to increase your current income, enjoy significant income tax deductions, and eventually leave a substantial legacy for your favorite charity or ministry through a Charitable Remainder Unitrust or Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust?

5. Have you sought the counsel of an experienced Gift Planning Counselor to explore your options and learn more about Charitable Planning?

6. Has your will or estate plan been updated in the past five years?7. Does your attorney have experience with estate planning, or do they do it as a sideline or with a boilerplate plan?8. Have you considered that your stewardship can go on past the grave?9. Do you have any idea what question # 4 is talking about?

Please call Robin Paris, our Gift Planning Counselor, if these questions have piqued your curiosity. She does have answers to all these questions, and can guide your process of examining the best, most God-pleasing way to handle your charitable giving while alive; and your legacy gifts, with appropriately drafted documents and language, with what is left behind.Call her at her Holy Cross, Lake Mary FL office at 407-333-0797, Ext. 1103, or email her at [email protected]. THE TRUTH ADVANTAGECHRIST’S KIDS’ CLUB There will be no CKC during March. Enjoy Spring Break and holiday celebrations with your families!

Our home receives dozens of telephone solicitations to contribute to charities, political groups, and various venders who begin talking by saying, “We are not trying to sell you anything.” Sometimes they ask me, “How are you Mr. Lisk?” On occasion I actually answer the question. I remember an incident after I had experienced an injection in my eye for a chronic condition. I replied by describing the procedure and the pain. The solicitor became empathetic, confused, and forgot what he was selling. We had a nice talk.We live in a world of lies. The product claims to be “free” but there is often a large postage and handling charge. The politician says “You can keep your doctor” but you can’t. The saleslady says, “That dress looks great on you!” (And it doesn’t.) The store advertises 50% off but inflates the original price. The Publix clerk asks how are you? You feel terrible but you say, “Fine,” and add, “How are you” – not really caring what the answer might be.On one occasion a clerk asked me how I was, and I replied “Thankful.” That comment opened up a meaningful dialogue. The other day a clerk shared with me “That man just tried to scam me.” I replied that there are a lot of lies in the world, but that “Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.” She said, “Yes he is, but a lot of people don’t know it.” For me that was a brief slice in time of koinonia, the “communion of saints,” the affirmation of a common bond in Jesus Christ. Precious, because the truth was told.Telling the truth (and yes there are times when we should be silent) opens up meaningful conversation, builds trust, facilitates healing and imitates God – who cannot lie (Hebrews 6:8). Sometimes we know the truth but we are silent, fearing social censure. Martin Luther King, Jr., a truth-teller, once remarked, “In the end we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” Benjamin Franklin in Poor Richard’s Almanack said it differently: “As we must account for every idle Word, so we must for every idle Silence.” As Christians, followers of the Christ, God expects us not to be silent but to speak the truth in love. This makes our relationships better. Furthermore, there are issues we should address today such as the persecution of Christians and Jews, and the rights of the unborn. We speak out for the unborn because God tells us “Rescue those being led away to death, hold back those staggering toward slaughter… (Proverbs 24:11-12). We speak the truth about false religions and harmful ideas even though it makes us uncomfortable. And so we are better able to make positive things happen, and thus “make a difference” in our world of lies. Above all we speak about Jesus who is “the way the truth and the life.” As truth-tellers we have the advantage.Bruce Lieske Missions and Evangelism Team

FOLLOW YOUR VALUES TO FINANCIAL SECURITYMake wise decisions aBouT your Money By FollowinG your values.

When it comes to making financial decisions, we have three choices:

1. Share2. Save3. Spend

Our values serve as an internal compass to help keep us on track with what’s truly important in our lives. With this in mind, make a list of your values. Next, determine how much of your income you want to share, save and spend each week or month, based on your values. For example, if financial security and generosity are important, you may want to save x% of your earnings every month to cover essential and planned-for expenses, as well as share a portion of your income with your church or a cause that’s close to your heart. Keep in mind that in addition to financial resources, you can share your time and talents to help others, too. In doing so, you can help strengthen communities and change lives.

connecT your FaiTh and Finances For more than 100 years, Thrivent Financial has helped our member-owners be wise with money and live generously. We can do the same for you. Your Thrivent Financial representative can help you develop a customized strategy that aligns your financial goals with your values. FROM YOUR PoP BOOKKEEPEROne way you can recycle the return

envelopes in those annoying junk-mail solicitations is to donate the envelopes to me. Many times I use these envelopes for internal items such as paychecks, etc. Just drop them off in the church office and we’ll put them to good use. Thanks!Other news: remember if you are planning a church-sponsored event such as hosting a food drive or benefit for someone in need; cleaning up a local park; hosting a youth safety event, you can apply for funding from Thrivent.com/actionteam. After their approval, you will receive resources including T-shirts and seed money to help get you started. Can you believe it’s already March? When you stay busy, time sure flies. If your family is anything like mine, we are all caught up in the

daily grind of work, dropping kids off and picking up from school, only to take them to soccer practice or ballet. We then follow up the extracurricular activities with dinner, and homework, not necessarily in that order. We live in a hurry-up world—zipping from place to place, rarely taking the time to enjoy the moment. When was the last time you stopped to watch a bird search for food, or a mother duck teach her ducklings how to swim? Here in Florida, we are blessed to have so many beautiful plants and flowers that bloom almost all year long. Have you taken the time to admire God’s perfection in all the delicate and intricate details within a flower? We need to ask ourselves, “Have I stopped to smell any roses lately?”It is so important to take time for our family, our friends and ourselves. We all need to slow down and enjoy the little moments. It’s so easy not to realize how quickly the days fly by when we are right in the midst of things. From now on, when you find yourself rushing from place to place, remember to take a deep whiff.

Kathy Hudson

From a healthcare perspective, we are talking about our health, either collectively or individually; however, in my vision the greatest asset is our children, grandchildren and in many cases our great grandchildren. This gift from our Lord is a cherished part of our lives, an irreplaceable part that forever remains at the forefront of every conscious thought, especially their future. In support of that, we are also responsible for their training. “Train a child in the way they should go” Proverbs 22:6. For their safety, the following are the Top 10 Home Safety Tips for Kids:1. Be prepared for emergencies2. Secure windows, block

stairways and lock doors3. Install a smoke alarm and

carbon monoxide detector4. Keep small items and food out

of reach5. Cover electrical outlets and protect children from

electrical wires6. Keep sleeping areas as bare as possible, especially for

babies7. Keep cleaning materials and other chemicals away

from children8. Never leave children alone near water9. Keep children safe around family pets10. Any firearms should be unloaded and locked awayBetween services in March there will be additional information regarding child safety. MUSIC NOTES – MARCH 2015

The season of Lent is now upon us. In the music and worship areas of ministry (and many others), this means lots of extra hours as we

prepare for all the additional services coming up. I am so incredibly blessed to work with such dedicated and hardworking musicians here at Prince of Peace. So to all of you who sing, ring, or play: thank you! To anyone reading this who does not sing, ring, or play—what are you waiting for?! As we prepare for Good Friday and Easter, the following ministries could really benefit from a few more dedicated members:Parish Choir – three or four more low-end singers (tenors and basses).Handbell Chorus – a few extra hands are always a good thing! Media Team – worship projection and soundboard operators, especially for midweek services. Computer experience preferred, training will be provided. If you are interested in joining or have questions about any of these exciting ministries, please let me know! The best way to get in touch with me is through email ([email protected]).

Lutheran Women in mission

We received a thank you note from Russell House in Orlando for our donation last month. PoP members gave $96 to mites in January—so close to that $100 mark we strive for. In February, we sold bouquets of candy roses and donated, handmade

mugs. We were pleased with the $333 this project raised. Thank you so much. All women of the church are invited to a Spring Rally at Sanford’s Redeemer Lutheran Church in April. We will be taking gifts for Redeeming Life Maturity Home, who provided the baby bottles for our church. We are still working on how much we can give to the FL/GA District LWML for love scholarships.  These scholarships support students at all our Concordia colleges or seminaries studying to be a pastor, teacher, or DCE.  Love scholarships can be given to students who do not make the grade point required of other scholarships and there is always a need here. We want to give this in memory of our beloved deceased sister, Lee Richards. The national LWML is supporting Lutheran Public Radio with $40,000 over the next two years.  Our mites will be helping to provide additional office staff so the director can devote more time toward development of unprecedented opportunities to broadcast the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world.  LWML will allow the program, Issues, Etc., sustainability and expansion for the next two years. Check it out at www.issuesetc.org.  Listen to Lutheran Radio and purchase the book of the month, the Concordia Psalter.Lots of ways to grow in our faith!

senior pastor report:

• Challenges: Fiscal Position at PoP, include the Preschool; however, the results from the Restoration Project were miraculous. PK thanked Kurt for all his time and effort in leading this project. Need to continue to develop leaders.

• Other Reflections: Investing in staff and team building; investing in personal and professional growth. The first thing we are NOT going to do is panic about any of the challenges facing us. We must use sanctified common sense and prayer to solve our problems. Investing strategically – and seeking assistance where I find weakness. PK asked for approval to seal the parking lot (north end) with funds to come from MoP. Total bill is estimated at $650. M/S/C. Playground needs to be re-mulched.

Motion to mulch with MoP paying $1,000 and $1,000 coming from rest of the budget. M/S/C to approve; one opposed. The Endowment Committee voted to provide $1,000 for the mulch project.

• Need to start thinking about candidates for BoD elections in June.

• Restore Project: Total pledged and contributed totals approximately $298,000 with approximately $112,000 already received. A/C Phase One ($24,700) will be complete 1/20/2015. A/C Phase Two will commence soon. (approx. $15,000). Only 4 remaining A/C units left will be 2 large sanctuary units, one balcony unit, and one for the Preschool office. The Preschool office unit will require a crane to replace and will be the last unit considered since this unit is working well at this time.

• Strategic Direction - (20 minutes) Kurt Bickel – Need to plan for both governance and operations

over the next several years; next year plus a four-year extension. M/S/C to adopt the Strategic Planning Process Kurt proposed.
