LORD HAVE MERCY: ................................................................................... p. 27 M: For all that we need in life and for the wisdom to use all your gifts with

gratitude and joy, hear our prayer, O Lord.

M: For the steadfast assurance that nothing can separate us from your love

and for the courage to stand firm against the assaults of Satan and every evil. Hear our prayer, O Christ.

M: For the well-being of your holy Church in all the world and for those who

offer here their worship and praise, hear our prayer, O Lord.

M: Merciful God, maker and preserver of life, uphold us by your power and

keep us in your tender care:

M: The works of the Lord are great and glorious; his name is worthy of

praise.

M: Let us pray: PRAYER OF THE DAY: O God, the strength of all who trust in you, mercifully

hear our prayers. Be gracious to us in our weakness and give us strength to keep your commandments in all we say and do; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

FIRST LESSON: Hosea taught the Israelites how badly they needed God’s mercy. Hosea 5:15-6:6 15Then I will return to my lair until they have borne their guilt and seek my face—in their misery they will earnestly seek me.” 1“Come, let us return to the LORD. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds. 2After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence. 3Let us acknowledge the LORD; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.” 4“What can I do with you, Ephraim? What can I do with you, Judah? Your love is like the morning mist, like the early dew that disappears. 5Therefore I cut you in pieces with my prophets, I killed you with the words of my mouth—then my judgments go forth like the sun. 6For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.

PSALM 119c: .............................................................................................. p. 111

Oh, how I 'love your law!* I meditate on it 'all day long.

I have more insight than all my 'teachers,* for I meditate on your 'statutes.

I have more understanding than the 'elders,* for I obey your 'precepts.

Refrain

I have kept my feet from every 'evil path* so that I might o'bey your Word.

I have not departed 'from your laws,* for you yourself have 'taught me.

How sweet are your words 'to my taste,* sweeter than honey 'to my mouth!

Glory be to the Father and 'to the Son* and to the Holy 'Spirit, as it was in the be'ginning,* is now, and will be forever. 'Amen.

SECOND LESSON: Paul understood God’s mercy better because God

showed him so much mercy. 1 Timothy 1:12-17 12I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service. 13Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 16But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. 17Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

VERSE OF THE DAY: Alleluia. God was in Christ reconciling the world to

himself, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Alleluia.

(Please rise for the Gospel in honor of the words of Jesus.) GOSPEL LESSON: Learn mercy from Jesus. Matthew 9:9-13 9As Jesus went

on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him. 10While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. 11When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 12On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

HYMN OF THE DAY: #596 – Let Me Be Yours Forever SERMON: ..................................................................................... Matthew 9:9-13

Jesus has Boundless Mercy for You 1. Mercy for people who need him

2. Mercy makes you spiritually healthy. NICENE CREED: .......................................................................................... p. 31

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

Page 7: God Has Shown You Great Mercy · Great Mercy PENTECOST 3 June 21, 2020 Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church Rev. David R. Clark, x303 pastorclark@graceglendale.org {Wisconsin Evangelical

Page 7

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

OFFERINGS OF LOVE TO OUR LORD You may place your offering envelopes in the plates at the back of the sanctuary.

You may “check in” using the ShelbyNext app on your phone.

PRAYER OF THE CHURCH & LORD’S PRAYER: ....................................... p. 32 Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

HOLY COMMUNION: .................................................................................... p. 33 M: The Lord be with you.

M: Lift up your hearts.

M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

M: Praise to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In love he has

blessed us with every spiritual blessing. He sends the Holy Spirit to testify that we are his children and to strengthen us when we are weak. Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ. To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and thanks and honor and glory for ever and ever.
