one who speaks God’s Word to God’s people
EVANGELIST:
one who speaks or writes the Gospel (Good News)
APOSTLE: one sent by Jesus as His messenger or missionary

WHAT THE BIBLE IS
13And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.
16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,
1.God inspired(breathed into)the human writers.
13This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.
1. God inspired(breathed into)the human writers.2. God chose
everywordof the Bible. This is
calledverbal (word-for-word) inspiration.
17Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.
1. God inspired(breathed into)the human writers. 2.God chose

calledverbal (word-for-word) inspiration. 3. All Scripture is
100%true and
from God.
19"There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21and longing to eat what fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22"The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.'
25"But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.' 27"He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, 28for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.' 29"Abraham replied, 'They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.' 30" 'No, father Abraham,' he said, 'but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.' 31"He said to him, 'If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.' "

21For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

18I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book.

Evaluate: I believe that the Bible is God’s Word because it makes so much sense.
What are some of the ways the devil gets people to change the Bible? Why does the devil do this?
THE VALUE OF THE BIBLE
20Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.
1. It gives us God’s law (commands),
which
shows we are sinful
23For the wages of sin is death,
1. It gives us God’s law (commands),
which
shows we are sinful and condemned to death and need a Savior. (S.O.S.)
11Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.
16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
1. It gives us God’s law (commands),
whichshows we are sinful and condemned to death and need a Savior. (S.O.S.)
2. It gives us the
Gospel
(Good News),
whichshows us we have a Savior and gives us faith in him. (S.O.S.)
17Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.
1. It gives us God’s law (commands),
whichshows we are sinful and condemned to death and need a Savior. (S.O.S.)
2. It gives us the
Gospel
(Good News),
whichshows us we have a Savior and gives us faith in him. (S.O.S.)
3. It leads us totrust
in Jesus as
our personal Savior.
16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
1. It gives us God’s law (commands),
whichshows we are sinful and condemned to death and need a Savior.
2. It gives us the
Gospel
(Good News),
whichshows us we have a Savior and gives us faith in him.
3. It leads us totrust
in Jesus as
our personal Savior.
4. It guides
us in a Christian life of thankful service.
We said that the Bible contains both Law and Gospel. What would happen if we only told someone about God’s Law, and left out the Gospel? What about if we only told someone of the Gospel, but left out the Law?
HOW WE SHOULD USE
THE BIBLE
10As soon as it was night, the brothers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. 11Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
1. Read and study it prayerfully in private
25Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
1. Read and study it prayerfully in private
2. Gladly hear and learn it in church, publicly
28He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it."
1. Read and study it prayerfully in private
2. Gladly hear and learn it in church, publicly
3. Trust and obey what we learn in it
What’s wrong here? Teri says she doesn’t have to go to Bible class or read the Bible at home because she gets all the spiritual strength she needs from the Sunday worship service.
1. Study carefully the notes you have taken in class; be sure you understand them.
2. Study questions 6-17, 145-147 in the Catechism.
3. Complete the “Working with God’s Word” section on this page.
4. Memorize these Bible verses:
2 Peter 1:21 – “Men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.”
VIP 2 Timothy 3:16 – “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness.”
John 17:17 – “Your Word is truth.”
5. Review the names of all the New Testament Books (See Lessons 1 and 2)
6. Complete Worksheet #3 at home and have your parents correct your book
7. Be ready to write a quiz on the Key truths, Very Important Passages, and New Testament Bible Books at our Review Session on Wednesday, September 26.
