A. Nationalism:-Pride in one’s country. -Three ways to show pride:-Art, Literature, and Architecture.
B. Alexis De Tocqueville:-Frenchman who traveled to America and coined the term “individualism” to describe Americans’ independence and self-reliance.
C. Hudson River School of Artists:-Drew pictures of the beauty of the American landscape.
D. Noah Webster:-Writes the first American dictionary which clarified American spellings and meanings.
E. Transcendentalism:-Style of writing that promotes self-reliance and individualism. -Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau.
F. Early American Writers-Washington Irving-James Fenmore Cooper-Nathaniel Hawthorne-Edgar Allen Poe
G. Neoclassical Architecture:-Buildings designed in this style to look like Roman buildings because of strong Roman democracy. -Represented elite rich.
H. Sectionalism:-Looking after the interests of one section of the country over another.
I. Industrial Revolution:-Reorganizing of society and economy. -Machines replace hand tools and decreases costs. J. Interchangeable Parts:-Parts of machinery and goods that can be freely exchanged for others. -Increased production of goods. -Increased production of goods in Factory Systems.
K. Steel Plow:-Increased farm efficiency. -Invented by John Deere. L. Telegraph:-Improved communication. -Invented by Samuel B. Morse. M. Steamboat:-Reduced travel time. -Invented by Robert Fulton.
O. Henry Clay:-Nicknamed “The Great Compromiser.”-Tried to settle the differences between the North and the South.
P. Clay’s American System:-Program that included tariffs, stabilize national bank, and improve transportation.
Q. Election of 1824:-Those who supported Clay voted John Quincy Adams. -When Adams beats Andrew Jackson, Adams makes Clay his Secretary of State.
R. Corrupt Bargain:-Andrew Jackson’s calls it the corrupt bargain because it was a secret deal for Adams to get the presidency.
S. Election of 1828:-Andrew Jackson become to president. -Changed laws so all adult white men can vote. -Wanted to clear the government of elite and wealthy class people. Replaced officials with friends.

T. Spoils System:-Process of replacing government officials with political allies regardless of qualifications. -Pendleton Civil Service Act ends spoil system in 1883. Requires government officials to pass an exam.
U. Tariff of Abominations:-Jackson places extremely high tariff on the South which damages economy.
V. South Carolina Nullification Crisis:-South Carolina claims they have the right to nullify the law. -Jackson threatens to use military force. -Jackson ends up lowering the tariff.
W. McCullough vs. Maryland:-Supreme Court ruled the federal government can do whatever it needs to fulfill responsibilities. -IMPLIED POWERS.
X. Pet Banks:-Jackson selected smaller private banks to hold the government’s money. -Disaster for economy.
Y. Indian Removal Act:-Jackson moves Native Americans to undesirable lands in what is now Oklahoma.
Z. Worcester v. Georgia:-Cherokee sue and Supreme Court rules they have rights to their lands. 1a. Trail of Tears: The Cherokee are forced to march to new territory. 4,000 die along the way. Sequoyah: Cherokee leader who created Cherokee alphabet so they could communicate on trail.
2b. Whig Party:-Forms in opposition to Jackson’s policies.

23v. Gadsden Purchase:-United States buys land that includes parts of New Mexico and Arizona. 24w. “Fifty-Four Forty or Fight!”:-Cry for those who wanted to go to war with Britain over Oregon’s border. -Treaty sets border at the 49th Parallel.
Adams – Onis Treaty:- Gave American Florida.

parties and government got along.
- Monroe Doctrine:- Europe should stay out
of affairs in the Western Hemisphere.
